    Aptly named (or perhaps not) as it has flooded in the past but there have been some flood alleviation works along there since we were last there.

    Yes Bulholme lock with a little gravel barge, as I said they stopped running years ago. The info your giving is from 2015, not current just highlighted with the little gravel barge, when did they stop running? He’s asking about getting to Sprotborough and the S&SY so generally not the area your talking about.
      If @IanD wants to take advice from 8 years ago and from someone who never got past Sprotborough so be it, but I doubt he will, as he wants to know what’s happening today on the canal he’s travelling on, not what it was like 8 year ago.

    I was talking in general about the locks Ian will pass through to get to his ultimate destination, including the one I pictured us sharing a commercial gravel barge with, (which wasnt Pollington).

    Your not talking in general the locks @IanD will be passing through with regards to sharing locks, because most of them he cannot share, I’m talking Tanker size, the little gravel barges stopped running years ago.

    The locky had just sent us through here at Sprotborough. When we came out we realised he had done this because Humber Princess was coming the other way.

    Your information as you say is from 2015, so not really up to date, as I say you can’t share with the Humber Pride on the S&SY.

    You don’t need to book anything with the locks past the Tinsley flight, the volunteer lock keepers are normally around, all depends on the day and if they want to volunteer.

     If there’s a boat going down on the same day you will be sharing, as the water is back pumped to keep the length watered, so you share up and down.

     Once your down, in most cases the top sluices are set automatically to open after a minute or so, so filling the lock. The locks are normally set for you when going from Sheffield. The following locks may have volunteers on. Aldwick, Mexborough top, Mexborough low, Long Sandel and Syke house, but obviously this is down to the volunteers, but these are the volunteer operated ones.

      You can make good time going down to Doncaster, especially if there are two boats as you can “pepper pot” alternative locks.

     You can’t share as the commercial’s take the whole lock, the only one you can share Is Pollington when the lock keeper uses the full length chamber.

      Photo taken from the lock gates, absolutely no chance of sharing, especially when she powers out.

    I stop at both, but prefer this one, very friendly owner and great high street for food after a pint. Chinese, fish’n’chip shop, Indian, pizza place and the star Ibby’s Kebab shop, the whole selection, Ibby’s kebabs, best I’ve ever had. 
    Moorings just outside, never had and trouble there.

      Obviously CCT and not CaRT as they don’t do it now on their waterways as you hint at, never mind doing it on a council owned one.

     Looks like this section will be taking a big slice of future CCT donations with the dredging and graffiti removal.

  9. @IanD Looking at what’s been happening with Pennine routes over the last couple of years, I wouldn’t bother and I’d plan for the Trent route, that’s the way everyone goes South from Sheffield. Bigger waterways, electric locks, bigger Marina’s should you need to leave the boat, better resources than the North. I would just concentrate on getting my boat to my Home mooring and do the HNC/Roch/L&L as holidays at a more relaxed pace once the boat is tried and tested.

  10. Not that hard. You can easily do Doncaster in a day, especially with crew, The slowest bit is from Sheffield to Rotherham (the flight and manual old locks) once past there all big electric, all normally self filling so ready for you. Wide canals and rivers so no crawling past Cmoorers on tickover for hours at a time, you can be at Doncaster for 5pm if all goes to plan and you start down the flight normal time 9am. Light nights and warm weather I would be moving, as once on the HNC and that way, who knows what delays you might have with stoppages/water levels???
     

  11. @IanD Day 1: you can get to Doncaster no problem should be there @6pm, City centre mooring, couple of minutes walk to City centre. Or push on to Barmby Dunn, good food, fish’n’chips, Chinese, Pizza/Kebab. 
    Day 2: Doncaster to Stanley Ferry.
     Obviously all depends how much you want to do in a day, with your 11 day plan, you might be better doing longer days on the big canals with electric locks, as your more likely to hit delays/issues once your further west past Stanley Ferry. Remember your C&H spike.

     Seams to be the fashion with the new electric boats, roof completely covered with flexi panels, no where to walk if needed to get on, unless you walk on them and some with no centre line eyes, for the sake of one more panel. Just shows how much these new buyers have worked a boat or even the boat fitters.

  13.  I would say your decision will be either a full roof of good solar panels and less batteries or less panels and more/better batteries. As said above you’ll not be able to survive solely on solar all year. Maybe try a Marina or a mooring with elect hook-up for winter. You could spend your budget just on batteries.

     Your best to really work out how much power you’ll actually need, you may not need as much as you think? I only use my washing machine when I’m  moving/running the engine.

    I'm not sure that a lot of people on here know what it's like to simply not have enough money to get through a week, but there are a lot of people currently in that position and, having spent quite a lot of time there,  I sympathise. You try to live to your means, but when costs double, what you've got doesn't.

      Maybe like a lot of people who have moved onto the canals over the last few years, they may of thought it’s cheap living. We all know it can be a cheap way of life but it’s not cheap living anymore on a boat, especially if you haven’t got  finances in the first place, and it’s only going to get more expensive to be on the canals in the upcoming years

      If the ones in the article are paying council tax then they should have no problems claiming it as it should be a residential mooring. But it looks like they can’t claim it, so what moorings are they on, one’s in the town centre, the others say just outside the centre? This is one of the arguments on here, they are probably using services provided by local council without paying Council tax and want the same fuel allowance as people paying Council tax in the town.

     The allowance works out at less then £8 a week, I would say if people need £8 or it makes a massive difference, then how are they going to cope with increases in the future with License and food? I’m not rich but neither poor, but an extra £8 a week would make little difference and if it did I would be living a miserable life on the canal.

The ones that seam to be complaining they’re not getting the allowance are the likes highlighted in the article, basically continuous Moorers, like these living in Hebden bridge and working local. Leisure Livaboards in Marina’s know they can’t claim it as they’re not on a residential berth. So they aren’t moaning to the press like @LadyG and the likes.

    would it be feasible to add solids dilution fluid to said tank via the loo so has to turn it all fluid-ish? for easier pump out....

    Why are you worrying about it so much?
    The bedrooms and living area layout will be more of an issue with 3x adults onboard.

    CaRT need to be more flexible with the running of the carriers, both the oil and the gravel, they must be allowed to run when they can and need/want to. Extending their hours in the lighter Summer months if needed and taking the tide times into consideration for the tanker. Hopefully it can be a financial success for the carriers and hopefully everyone involved can work together with a sensible approach to make it so.
