  1. Thanks Simon. Capitulum. Just looked that up. All that from an old bit of iron bolted to a bridge. A real treat, when I found it, while walking the dog this morning. Still in its original place after over 150 years!
  2. Can anyone clarify the meaning of cap? The coal post had cap 42 on it. Does it refer to clause 70 or section 70? Any ideas.
  3. Excellent work people. From looking at the above a realised I had seen this way back on a coal post on the GU. Every days a school day. Thanks again.
  4. Found this sign on a bridge parapet on the Oxford canal near Braunston. Wondered what the line " 24 25 vict cap 70" was about. I'm sure one of you will know. Thanks.
  5. Sounds good. Our boat is 62 ft but we fancied trying something smaller so my OH could do a bit more of the steering.
  6. Many thanks. I'll give them a ring. When I did a search on both websites they came up with 6 and 8 birth boats. Maybe the dates I put in had only got the bigger boats left.
  7. Cheers Haggis. Does anyone know where these boats can be hired from if they still exist?
  8. We fancy doing the union canal from Glasgow to Edinburgh in the next couple of years. I have been looking at hire companies and they all seem to have large boats with 6 to 8 berths. Are there any companies with smaller boats? It's not the length that worries us, our boat is 62ft, it just seems a waste. I know there are several companies in England who have smaller boats but how about Scotland. I appreciate it seems to make little difference to the cost but would be easier on us.
  9. A second coat has been put on. Looks like all is well so far. Thanks for all the advice. (except you know who)
  10. I think the nooks are fine it's the crannies that are the problem.
  11. Yep it looks horrible. Grey at the front and jet black at the back. Will ask about hardtop. Thanks. Which heat setting would you recommend?
  12. It's in Swanley Bridge. Went to look at it this morning but there was no one about. Wanted some advice before I spoke to them. Thanks for your help. Can I use my wife's Dyson hairdryer or do I need to hire a commercial one?
  13. It was jet washed first. The original blacking was very good all over except for a couple of scuffs and the base plate seam. It had been taken back to bare metal when the hempel was put on at Norton Canes. It was done, I think on Thursday afternoon. Apparently it got damp that night and that caused it to go grey. It was done outside. The rear third of the hull is jet black. The rear third is jet black so don't think it's the sunlight but noted. So putting a second layer on top of the grey should be OK?
  14. I had my boat blacked this week with 2 pack epoxy Jotun. It was last done 5 years ago with Hempel and was in very good nick. I am having the steering straightened so thought it a good idea to have a coat of blacking put over the top to cover the few areas where it needs it. All good except the blacking has "bloomed". It has gone a grey colour starting about a third up from the stern all the way to the bow. What is the best thing to do now? Can you just let it set for a couple of days and then put a coat on the top or do you need to clean it off. It looks and feels pretty firm. If you put another coat over the top then I assume it should be 2 pack? Any advice would be helpful.
  15. It is still an annoying leak. I have decided to put up with it until I have to inevitably drain the system and then deal with it.
  16. Just tried that. Hasn't made any difference though. The engine is running fine but the lever still has no resistance.
  17. Not used them since last year when they seemed fine. This year my 2LW was very cold so gave each lever a few pulls prior to starting. One was as expected giving a certain amount of resistance. The other one was too easy with virtually no resistance. I was able to start the engine but wonder what the problem is with the charging lever, should I be concerned?
  18. This is the best shot I could get. Hope that clears things up.
  19. Yeah but until I do that, as its only producing a drop or two each week, I was hoping for a temporary fix so I'll try a few of the above suggestions.
  20. I'll try and photo it when we go back to the boat at the weekend. Th other fitting was a compression joint onto a a threaded pipe. Problem is they did not match very well. That's why I think it's the same problem. It's under the engine so difficult to get at, which is why I'm not sure exactly what it is.
  21. I think it's leaking around the compression joint. Already had that with the other skin tank fitting, brass onto steel, not a good fit, don't know why they did it that way. Replaced the other one with a tail and hose with a jubilee clip, seals easily, but obviously needs the system to be emptied. This one is also in a much more awkward to get at place. I will try putting on the paste first, if that fails then I will try the tape.
