  1. Not speaking out of turn at all, just sharing your views on a discussion thread I realize the examples I gave weren't like for like, just saying that some rules can be bent or laxed without causing any damage to the end result Yes Dan owns the site and the decisions he makes on how to run it are his. However, saying it's not up for discussion? Where does that fit into the list of things we aren't allowed to voice an opinion on?
  2. Sorry, but I still agree with MtB view. We all have rules in our day to day lives, whether it be driving, work, sport or other leisure activities. Can I honestly say that I follow all of them all of the time? Of course not, I'm human. For one, sometimes I forget, I sometimes forget a rule and break it, and other times I choose to "bend" a rule I find has no real purpose. For example: 4 managers all run catering units on one large site, the break rule for staff is, 4 hour shift = no break, 6 hr shift = 20 min break & 8 hr + shift = 1/2 hr break. The casual staff didn't have a home location and worked for all 4 of us depending on who had what events on at the time. When they worked for me I'd give them a choice of either having a 20 min break or 2 x 10 breaks and the same with the 1/2 hr breaks; naturally the smokers would chose to have the 2 shorter breaks so they could get in a couple of cigs throughout their day - yes I relaxed "the rule" but it did no one any harm and the staff always seemed just that little bit happier when working in my areas. Also the staff who only worked a 4 hour shift weren't entitled to anything to eat, if we had bacon or sausages left at the end of breakfast the Chef and I would put it to the side so they could have a butty at the end of their shift, it would only have been thrown away anyway - again breaking the "rule", but I felt human decency and common sense prevailed. On the same hand I wouldn't break the 8 - 8 rule for running a engine or genny - that rule makes sense to me and could disrupt someone else. Again, common sense prevails So yes, some rules are important and should be followed, others are in place to make somebody elses life easier to the detriment of others As with a lot of other folk, I agree something needed to be done, but I think what has happened is far beyond "overkill" BTW - I liked it when the MOD's used to contribute to the threads with their incite, not as MOD's but as fellow boaters, the only ones I see still doing that are Fade to Scarlet, Lady Muck & Theo, maybe I'm just not reading the right threads? ETA - I forgot Theo

    Bimble

I typed in bimble.co.uk and it took me directly to their site Mike hope that helps a bit
  4. Green thingy to you Mr MtB - well said and clear concise example given. I wholeheartedly Agree
  5. I think it'd be a bit on the larger than needed for Dave's bicycle
  6. We've done this ^^ a few times. Nick, I wouldn't have been bothered at all, as long as we had been retied properly and if we had been in the sun had not been moved to a shaded area With that said, I don't know that we would do it ourselves, I'd be to timid of being on the receiving end of the "rath" of the other boater; but you did the right thing in going to speak to them as soon as they returned
  7. Anyone have any idea what the black things are in the water between the boat and the swan?
  8. There you go, Dean has copied a portion that contains the info you are looking for ^^^
  9. Just like reading a newspaper or magazine Mike, I only read what interests me. Some articles I'll comment on, others I won't Sometimes I just find it interesting to read what other folks views are, although I might not agree with them. I do however, agree that it was getting out of control so to speak with a few members being very nasty towards others and something needed to be done. You can tell that just by the amount of long standing members who no longer post.
  10. Scrap the cucumber & ice cubes (btw I love ice in my drinks), and use frozen berries instead, lovely treat at the end of glass
  11. What a lovely looking dog - hopefully it won't take him to long to settle in and be able to enjoy his life with you. Nice to see you posting again

  13. Fully agree with Alan & Tam's comments. Ours is only 11ft wide. We had a bow thruster when we first started out, we couldn't get in or out of the marina without it; well that was till we went through Braunston tunnel the first time and broke it from over use. We went through Blisworth tunnel the following day without a problem and haven't bothered to even look at what it would take to repair it and that was 2+ years ago. The only gadget we have for steering is a short step for me to stand on when in control of the tiller so I can see over the roof (I'm a bit of a short arse) Take it slow and practice, you'll soon get there and your confidence will grow each trip
  14. Congratulations - hope your move on board day is much less adventuress than ours was (don't ask), Your boat looks very comfy, you've done well Happy boating
  15. If that was directed at me; what makes you think that isn't exactly what happened? I wasn't moaning about the occasion, simply making a statement to confirm there was a crt vol checker working in the area a couple of weeks ago. BTW - we do enjoy our boating
  16. IIRC you need pins where the guy digs up the patch of grass between the canal edge and the hard surface tow path, making it pretty hard to moor as the pins are just being pounded into soft turned over soil. Some still manage to moor there though - they must have to super dupper extra long pins I guess ETA - We try to avoid mooring with bollards, unless it's just one at either the front or back. We find it quite difficult to get the angle right on the lines to give us a decent mooring for our length of boat.
  17. We were moored there a couple of weeks ago and Dave had a conversation with the volunteer as after he took down our plate number, knocked on the side of the boat and wanted to confirm the name of the boat as we've removed the magnetic signs we had as they were causing the paint to blister behind the signs. Dave asked if he was a vol or a paid EO, he confirmed he was a local vol
  18. for those of us with no mailing address or printer on board the boat, it's not all that easy.
  19. There's been a couple available since we've been crusing - 2+ years Puddle something and another
  20. You've touched on something there Nic; as I've previously stated, we go quite slow, both cruising and through locks, we are very rarely in a rush to get to a specific destination and just pull over when we find a nice spot that suits our requirements. We either pull over to let others pass or work with them if they are in locks directly behind us till they can get past. BUT, when we are in a flight, we do tend to speed up, regardless if there is someone behind or not. I know we timed ourselves on Caen Hill and a couple of other flights we've done, keeping in mind neither of us wear a watch now. It's almost like a wee game or something. I guess we just want to get through the locks as efficiently as possible and get back to cruising.
  21. We've only ever come across 2 boats moving slower than us. Guess that means we move pretty slow, but thankfully we do tend to keep an eye out for boats behind and pull over to let them pass on straight sections. On flights, well we do what we can, if there are ponds large enough to let them pass, if not, then we just try to do as fast as we can.
  22. VERY well written & balanced reply IMO, I'd give you a greenie if I could - so have one of these instead
