  1. LOL Beaker - I think it should be, especially when he tells that story (which thankfully isn't all that often) B~
  2. Hi Toni, I know I said I wasn't going to post anymore, but just couldn't resist replying to your above post. Could you please pm me the name of the company you dealt with, hubby and I currently have limited experience in the DIY field (however I'm quite sure that will be another steep learning curve we will encounter once we have our dream in hand) but it's definitely worth a phone call. Thanks so much Betty~
  3. Hi Everyone, I would like to apologize on behalf of Dave and his last post, not making excuses for either his tone or language; but I do know him quite well,we've been married for the better part of 15 years, and in that time he hasn't raised a finger to anyone. In fact he's the guy who will rush to anyone's assistance if they are being either verbally or physically mistreated. I would think, his last response was more to do with some over ambitious Birthday celebrating along with the disappointment & frustration we are both feeling after walking away from a boat we both thought "this is the one", when the seller refused to let us a arrange a full per purchase survey, based on the inconvenience it would cause them as they are currently living on-board the boat! It would have only been out of the water for 1 day. Anyway, we walked away. In my humble opinion we would have been fools to hand over the better part of £75,000 for a boat that was 7 years old without having so much as a hull survey completed never mind a full pre purchase one. Anyway, I do truly appreciate the positive advice some of you have shared with us; in particular I have the numbers of a couple of marine insurers who I will call tomorrow to seek their guidance / advice re lawyers. And if we think any of the boats we look at in the future are for us (and we for it), and it's a private sale we will ask the seller if we could complete the sale through a brokerage firm (at our expense) Both of these were Very good suggestions, I thought, and went some way in answering my original question as well as having some understanding of why Dave and I are so concerned about loosing our one and only shot at our dream. As for everyone else thank you for sharing your thoughts on whether to involve a lawyer or not, and just ever so slightly off topic the value of a surveyor's report . Again, didn't realize I was opening such a can of worms by asking for who to turn to or who to avoid. At this point, I'm thinking, maybe I should just stick to reading the forums and avoid posting Kind Regards, Betty~
  4. Hi guys, Wow didn't realize lawyers would be such a hot topic, I kind of feel like I asked for everyone's thought's and views about which type of loo they felt would be the best to go with. (not to worry, we've already decided that one) Really though, I do appreciate receiving everyone's options on using or not using a solicitor to over see the refundable deposit & the final bill of sale. After having one fairly difficult encounter with a private seller, as Dave has mentioned; that's when we thought it best to seek the advice and guidance of a experienced marine solicitor before entering into any further negations with private sellers. Unfortunately the 3 boats we are viewing this coming week are mostly with private sellers as well. I appreciate not everyone currently selling a boat is trying to rip people off, but I'm sure most of you would agree there are a few. My fear is I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. MtB - I love your posts and sense of humour, and whole heartedly agree with your 3 points. 4 months ago, I couldn't tell you the difference between a car battery or a deep cell battery, or why turning the water off while you brush your teeth would be so important, never mind what an anode was. We've had a Very steep learning curve so far on our journey and I understand we have a long way to go yet. Ideally we would like to be on our boat and starting our new life before the end of January and I just don't have the confidence that we will be able to educate ourselves enough to understand all the pitfalls to look out for at the buying stage. Hence we are willing to seek some expert advice, even if it is only good for the day we receive it or following a paper trail, or even safeguarding a deposit if we find ourselves in that situation. The funny thing is, I've spent more time researching regulations, living aboard costs, CaRT rules & regulations, multi fuel stoves, 12v appliances, helmsman courses, fire extinguisher / fire blanket requirements, blackening, surveyors, traditional / semi trad / cruiser sterns, wide beam vs narrow (whichever is the most authentic), wood vs smokeless fuel, the god forsaken arguments about types of loos, down to how much power an iron will suck out of the system; than I would have if I was still working full time at my last job and I was averaging around 50 hours a week there. Please don't get me wrong, I'm in no way complaining, I have fully enjoyed it. Really the only frustrating bit I've found so far is trying to get a straight answer out of CaRT regarding CCer's and the regulations about 14 day moving process in the winter when froze in somewhere. Grace & Favour - great idea, I'll give that a try on Monday when their offices reopen. Thanks again all for the input - much appreciated Betty~
  5. Hi All, newbie's here. We are looking at buying our first Canal Boat, sorry to all you traditionalist's, but we're looking at a wide beam in the vicinity of £60 - £75K. All 3 of the boats we are currently interested in are through a private sales rather than brokerage firms. We've done a fair amount of research, including picking up some Very valuable tips from this forum. Any boat we "think" is right for us; we plan on having a full pre-purchase survey done. We understand it is quite a common practice to offer a deposit and of course we would need this to be fully refundable based on the out come of the survey if there are say any repairs needed over an agreed amount. We were thinking anything over £2K, but not including blackening and anodes as we appreciate these need to be done on a fairly regular basis anyway, nor would it include any cosmetic improvements we would want to make to the interior. With all that said, we've read some of the nightmare stories of people loosing their deposits; and feel we would like the services of an experienced solicitor to draw up the deposit agreement and the final sale as well. Any suggestions, or even ones to avoid would be most appreciated. Ta Betty~
  6. Hi All, What a Great web site!! Hubby (Dave) and I have been visiting it for a few of months now and have found it most informative, helpful and in some cases quite humorous as well. We are both newbie's to Canal Boats, well Dave had a weeks vacation on a NB about 30 years ago, unfortunately it ended in sinking the boat...long story, but will tell all about it sometime in a different forum. I have a fair amount of boating experience, but it was the better part of 20 years ago back in Canada and all involved Sail boats or Catamarans. Not very practical experience for future owners of a Canal Boat I'm afraid! Anyway, we are both semi retired and have decided it's our time to take the plunge for a complete lifestyle change. Get out of the rat race as so many others have done before us. All the while planning on dragging our two unsuspecting, ageing, psychotic cats with us - I'm sure they will love it!! We've been researching for the past 3 months and have made some pretty significant decisions (including which style toilet we want) and that for the first couple of years at least we plan to be CC'ers, so no need to look into permanent moorings at this stage (yes we are aware of the need for a post code and have sorted that already) I'm sure we'll have loads of questions, one of which I am about to post in another forum regarding pre-purchase solicitors; so any help / advice would be most appreciated. BTW - we are still at the point of finding the right boat, so haven't purchased anything yet. Betty~
