    I think the "Letchworth" is one of those extensively rebuilt on the Thames in the fifties - perhaps Pete can tell us more. The new plating and riveting stands out on these. Some of the Captains whose boats were so rebuilt claimed the identities of some were swapped !

    A question for Pete - were any wooden boats ever built at Saltley or did they just build composite boats there?

    It's looking good - but what you need to add the finishing touches are a set of Ash strips on the counter - any boat looks bare without them! Pretty well every boat on the canal had them in carrying days!

    There was a lot of controversy when the book was published as a number of old boaters disagreed with the captions (done I believe by the late George Smith)

    I sorry to have to say that I would prefer canals to have no fish in them anyway so as not to have to put up with the "objectionable freeloaders" as I think someone described the fishing fraternity some time ago.

    Referring to boats rebuilt at Goole, the ex- C&C "Apollo" was taken from maintenance on the Caldon canal and rebuilt at Goole, where I gather the JP2 was removed. I presume it was at this time it was made overwide, hence the guards in front of the cabin were sliced through to make it narrower.

    I should point out that some, if not all, locks at Atherstone once had centre paddles, although removed many years ago - I could post a picture but it's beyond my capabilities!

    I'm not sure of the exact date of the sinking of the "Lancing", but it was after October 8 1961 when I have it recorded passing through Braunston loaded for Croxley (at 4.20 in the afternoon!)

    It did indeed sink in Limehouse, when paired with the "Bude",due to lack of care on the part of the dockers when loading. The daughter of the then captain is still happily with us, living in Rugby

    A high tide at Gloucester can go over the weirs and affect greatly the flow in the river - I've often liased with the lock keeper at Gloucester in the past and timed it to leave the lock and reach the parting as the tide arrives.
