  1. We've been a member of a timeshare group for the last 9 years. At first it was good, with fair pricing and easy to book the boat.......however, gradually it has got more and more expensive, and more and more difficult to get the boat when we wanted, to the extent that it now needs to be booked 2 years in advance, which is a bit difficult when you work shifts and can only book leave annually.

We have just resigned, so our 2 weeks in May will be our last time. We have enjoyed it, and the social side has been good, but now it doesn't fit what we need.

Couple things to ask the "management"

1 How are expenses expected to increase over the next couple of years?

2 What percentage are they putting aside for repairs?

3 Do they have a fund to replace the boats and how often?

The photo in the link certainly looks like an old Canaltime boat, and from experience, these are now getting dated, and have an "unusual" layout, with the front end bedroom, with no forward view and a difficult front deck to get to. We had one for 2 weeks when there was a problem with our timeshare boat and they wouldn't be my choice.

  2. It always amuses me that you have to pay for some Freeview Channels, perhaps they should be on a separate system called Feeview.

Can you please tell me how you pay for anything on FreeView? According to everything I have read it is all FREE.

Now FreeSat, yes you can pay for a card so that you get certain local channels

  3. Allan, Evo,

that's why I nearly always put a name at the top of my replies, then everyone knows who it is aimed at.

    Allan,

don't take umbrage. Unfortunately the smillies aren't working for me at the moment so they were missing from my comment about 0700!

I have to get up at 0415 most of next week.......I hate day shifts!!!

  4. Allan,

I'm on holiday, what the heck would I want to get up and be on the move by 0700 for? If we see a nice pub at lunch time then we will stop, ditto in the evening.

It must be us, but this is supposed to be a HOLIDAY!! Not a race around the UK.

  5. Well it looks like it is going to be Oxford and back, so I've just ordered our Nicholsons Guide. It looks like that will be an easy 11 days, so we have 2 spare. Was thinking of a little jaunt up the Thames, but is it really £33 a day? (54' narrow boat)

  6. Thanks Cloud19.

Sheila doesn't want to do much of the Grand Union, as she doesn't like big locks, so it looks if we are going to do Oxford and up to Lechlade. Canalplan gives that as roughly 11 days, so plenty of time to stop and look at things. I certainly want to go to William Morris's house.

Thanks for the tips on the pubs; we do like to eat and drink!!

What is the licence fee for the Upper Thames?

  7. Thanks for that, WJM, but I don't think we will be doing it. As I said at the start SWMBO doesn't do early, and we normally manage about 6 to 7 hours a day, depending on weather, scenery, things to see, etc.

Still leaning towards the Oxford and back, with a jaunt on the Thames if time allows.

  8. "I think the Thames ring is pushing it at six hours a day for two weeks"

I gave myself two weeks to do the Thames Ring last year. I was home two days early. Two weeks is plenty enough!

Would you be willing to give me some rough ideas of where you stopped, and how long you were on the go each day?

  9. Phylis,

the boat is one of 2 owned by the Holiday Owners Club, and we only own a share in them. I have spoken to the "boss" and I get the impression that they hadn't thought it would ever be needed, so haven't included it. They are probably right, most users aren't as adventurous as my wife and I.

  10. Our insurers don't seem to allow any tidal use, so that is why the Trent is out.

Looks like it is going to be a gentle ramble down to Oxford and back, but if we do things quicker than we thought then might have a little tottle up the Thames for a day or two.

Any recommendations of good real ale pubs, reasonable canal side fooderies and even some folk clubs would be nice. Pretty please??

  11. John

agree with what you are doing, but the problem is how many people actually have a GPS giving OS MR's or a copy of an OS map with them on the boat. Always thought it was a shame that Nicholson's don't put the grid line numbers on the maps in their books.

  12. I can only answer for rural Wales, but the Ambulance and Fire Services here work to OS Map References. The local Young Farmers have recently been going around all the outlying farms and houses with a GPS and special cards on which they write the MR and place with the phone. It also helps if they have to arrange heli evac as that also can use MR's.

  13. Funnily enough I've just bought a pair of Binatone PMR's complete with rechargeable batteries and charger for £20.

If I know I can get a 2m cheap enough I am going to do my Foundation on the next course. Seen the notes my NdN got and I can answer most of them now.
