  2. I’ve just used some of this myself and can recommend it highly! ?
  3. We WILL catch up, by hook or by crook! Bit cheezed off by this long stoppage - even tho we’ll be below it, there’s no winding for us north of here so as long as we’re pointed south, we’ll get ONE cruise in over this time - thank god we’ve not got a pump-out!! Altho I guess we could take the opportunity to practice reversing for a mile and a half - not as if there’ll be any other boats about! ?

  5. We must have just missed you pass us - was in n out doing chores! ☹️
  6. Cheers Glynn, there’s no substitute for personal experience!
  7. Has anyone on the panel got any experience of these batteries? https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F112499485478 space available (each) is 522mm length, 265mm width and 300+mm hight.. End posts only. Or or any other recommendations?! Many thanks in advance, you chaps and (especially!) chapesses have already been so helpful!
  8. I cannot recommend the Salamander Hobbit stove highly enough - used just with coal it is economical, warm and easy to keep in overnight. For wood, we just increase the top draft and use decent well-dried wood. Last winter it did a 57' boat fine in -9c. http://salamanderstoves.com/the-hobbit-stove/
  9. OMG i didn't know such a thing existed!! Thankyou!
  10. ooh... some of thems would fit size wise... change of terminals tho..... Bring it on! ?
  11. Harsh.. but fair... in roughly %50 of cases.... the other %50 with genuine mental health issues? Also there's the "chicken and egg" question - the increasing use of drugs and alcohol to self medicate being a common phenomenon.. real life just aint that black n white - sadly!
  12. Chap in the photo seems to be saying.. "it should be up HERE..." also nicked from farcebook..
  13. Ooh really? This won't be that easy as they're blimmin heavy (and in an awkward place) and i've done me back in.. gonna have to get me some help! ETA When i do get them disconnected, whats the best way to test which is the least shag*ed? - test the voltage of each seperately? ETA#2 Many many thanks to all so far!
  14. Would love to be able to replace like for like, 'specially as they have done brilliantly for 12 years, without solar charging for nine of those years - sadly these batteries are unbranded, the previous owner says he got the from a mate who was ordering a shedload for a solar farm - no idea what they are sadly, no markings to be seen! Cheers for 'tother advice - pretty much what i thought but best ask and be safe... ?
  15. Another battery question - oh joy - i hear you cry! following on to my previous thread.. we need replacement batteries! Question part one.. our current 2x 110ah batts are sealed, unbranded and 52cm(l) x 26cm(w) x 15cm(h) and look like this... We can go higher, but not longer or fatter! The terminals are bolted into the batts as in pic. Would rather not have to change the terminal fittings to fit different terminals but maybe this will have to be done.. We are pretty low use liveaboards, (240v fridge, 600w inverter, led lights, lappy, NO tv or hair straignteners - no hair!) attatched to shoreline most of the time. We have 2x 140w panels going through a Victron MPPT 75/15 controller to keep them topped up - has worked well for 3 years. Replacement battery recommendations? Question part two... How do i disconnect them - do i have to wait till dark or cover the solar panels up? The MPPT controller has a 20A fuse in the bottom, what does this do? Can i just pull it before disconnection? The manual for this isn't helpful.. There is a vague chance that only one battery is fully sha*ged, and we can get by "for now" on one only - but again - i dont want to nacker anything by not disconnecting the solar before starting to unbolt terminals - also, should both battery switches be "off" before attempting to disconnect anything? Sorry for the tedious need for some hand-holding; all above is asked in the spirit of "the only stupid question is the one you DON'T ask!!!
  16. They do seem pretty d-e-d dead! Sooooo... as we’re lucky enough to be on shoreline for most things - can I get away with putting a bog-standard workshop 12v charger on them so we can use the water pump, gulper and the 12v lights in the evening as a stop gap until we can source new batteries ? Unplugging it during the day when away from the boat..

  18. Cor blimey mate - they are massive - 230ah! Ours r about the same size but only 110ah (originally!)- gotta go do family stuff now but I’ll measure them when I can - now I’ve cleared access it won’t b too hard.. just lifting them out will be quite a major feat! The last owner of our boat got them from a mate who was ordering a shed load for a solar farm somewhere.. they are unbranded as far as I can see.. I think I can hear my overdraft crying softly....
  19. Had it for about 15 years! sooo.... was getting all up n down readings between 13v with nothing on , and 10v with inverter and water pump going also inverter bleeping- then I realised the sun was coming n going from behind clouds! Covered panels! reading with nothing on - 13v with inverter ONLY - 11v with inverter & water pump - 10v + inverter continuous bleep tone batteries r sha*ged? The terminals are bolt in ones - the bolts actually go inside the casing - all checked n tight..
  20. Bit of hand-holding needed here... which setting on this thing do I need to use?
  21. Just out of interest - which batteries did you go for from tayna? Found their site - looks good!
  22. What of the 13.1v it’s now showing - is that to be trusted tho? Would it read that if only one leisure battery were sha*ged?
  23. This is cos a. I like free stuff and b. If I just left the batteries at %100 all the time, somehow they seemed to have less capacity when we went off shoreline I.e. went cruising and would sort of “get lazy”! Maybe my imagination but surely no harm in discharging/ recharging them regularly? never went below 70% even on a dull day.... mind you - we sure have had our money’s worth from them if they are nackered, think they’ve been in the boat about 10 years - 6 with previous owner and 4 with us and added solar...
