  1. Don't know if this helps at all but Shardlow Lock is still closed so nothing moving up or down from Swarkestone to Derwent Mouth Locks. The canal has been topped up with water to normal levels almost, but Shardlow Lock is still chained up. May be able to move tomorrow if crt decide that there is no cill damage but if there is still cill damage then will be closed for a while longer yet. The point of all that is that it's a dead end at the moment. Unfortunately I have no printer on board so can't print the flyers but will keep spreading the word as best I can. Best wishes to everyone hope it's found soon
  2. Sorry to confuse things. If you need help in my area, please let me know. I have a bicycle and nothing much to do for a week! Good luck x
  3. I'm stationary at Aston Lock at the moment, been here for 3 days due to the lock closure at Shardlow. Definitely nothing here. Nothing moving between Shardlow (probably even Derwent Mouth to be honest), and above Weston Lock. Shardlow Lock won't be repaired for at least 5 days, possibly a week and no room to turn round anywhere so everything at a standstill down here. Hope that helps x
  4. Thanks to everyone for your replies. It's not the going along the Trent that bothers me so much, it's the fact that I am single handing that worries me more. I'll definitely send for the map (and study it before I go, ). I'm sure I'll be okay to go on my own, I just felt that if someone came with me that knew the Trent well, I would feel more confident to go on my own in the future. I will tag along with some other boats. Ps my boat came up with the previous owners Tony Dunkley has kindly offered me some advice so will be contacting him too. Am feeling more confident already, haha!
  5. Thank you, Boater, that's really good to know for the future. Any ideas on how I could contact him, please?
  6. I'm a female single hander and wondering if anyone would pilot my 57' narrowboat from torksey to Cromwell sometime in May. I just don't feel I have enough experience to manage it on my own? Plenty of tea/coffee and bacon sandwiches on offer and willing to cover expenses or pay a fee if required.
  7. Thank you for your replies. I would like to get registered so that I have the option of using the electric but as I don't have a CRT mooring sounds like I'm not going to be able to at the present time. Will get in touch with Mike Grimes just to add support to your correspondence, pearley and see what response I get.
  8. The lock keeper said that boaters will have to register with debit card details, then you get a PIN number which you key into the bollard on the keypad and they help themselves to the money for how much electric you use. He was insistent that it will roll out to all CRT hook ups. I don't think it's CRT that you register with, I think it's an independent company and I'm wondering if they've franchised electric out or it's a trial for that in the future? My alternator belt was slipping, so until I got it fixed I just wanted to charge the batteries up. It's being fixed tomorrow so no big problem really but just wondered how widespread this new 'system' was.
  9. I'm moored at Boston CRT moorings and went to the lock keepers yesterday to ask about the electric hook ups on the moorings and how to get electric to my boat. The lock keeper on duty said that they were only for long term moorers not short stay visitors and you had to be registered (but he didn't know who with) to use them. He said it would be not good asking the local CRT office as they would only register long term moorers. There are 8-10 hook ups on the moorings and only five long term mooring places (all taken). He said this system was rolling out to all CRT electric hook ups, ie they would be for long term moorers only. Can he be right and does anyone else know of this happening? The bollards have key pads not card slots so, although I had some elec cards, they were unusable.
  10. Thank you everyone for your input. I need to take some time to read and digest all of this brilliant information, I'm really grateful, thank you. PS. Love the posts with the sense of humour too, have been chuckling away to myself .
  11. Thank you for your helpful replies, that opens the options up a bit! I must remember to ask/ look at the cooling system too. Would a full boat survey confirm the cooling system on the engine or would I have to trust the broker/sellers advice? Sorry, I really don't know much about engines. I do have someone who will look at boats with me to advise me as much as he can about the engine side of things. As regards the bowthruster, I think I will probably choose the boat I like best then. By the time I have got it home (will take some crew to fetch it home) I would know a little bit more on how well I can handle it. Hopefully I will get to keep the water storage, I wouldn't really want to compromise that so really useful information, thank you. I will definitely look into some handling courses, I was reading about those on another thread so will look into those when I finish work in March. Thanks again, Jill
  12. Hello, my first post, so please be gentle ? I am a female single hander (24' plastic boat for 5 years) looking to buy a 38'-48' liveaboard narrowboat. I have a couple of queries if anyone could kindly give me some advice please. I feel I'm going to need the security of bow thrusters to help me get front end in/give some assistance in turning. How important/useful are they to single handers, as I am severely limiting my choice of boats by having this on my wishlist. I am sure I have read somewhere that they can't be retro-fitted, is that right? My other question was engine size. I will be going on rivers and the tidal Trent (unavoidable unfortunately). The narrowboats I have seen for sale have anything from 20hp up to 38hp engines. I understand it's all about torque rather than hp, but how do I gauge that and work out the best engine size for river work and the tidal Trent. I feel I would be badly underpowered with a 20hp. I have really enjoyed reading and learning all that this forum offers, It's really helped me to get to the stage of actually buying a narrowboat this next few months and moving on board ready for the summer. Big thank you for that!
