  1. Thanks FTS, Have you tried puting 'The Fender Book' into Amazon?? Leads me off into a whole other realm of my life and I spend the next hour gazing at 'Guitar Porn'. Although I am more a Gibson man myself!!
  2. As ever, thanks guys, some really helpful suggestions. I am actually a semi-retired lumpy water boater and have a good knowledge of what I suppose I would call working knots, but this is a new departure for me. You never know it might even lead to a whole new business opportunity! Thanks again
  3. Good evening everyone, Thought long and hard (well for a second or two anyway) about whether to put this in Equipment or in Boating - settled on equipment but if any mods want to move it - please be my guest. I learnt basic splicing many years ago when I worked on a dredger for a while, but I have never taken it any further than some very simple splices. I would like to teach myself some more decorative ropework - tiller pin tassles, bell ropes, fenders, that kind of thing. Does anyone have any advice on a book to buy so I can get started when the nights start drawing in? A quick search on Amazon reveals many to choose from. (I suppose I could just plump for the 'Bible' - The Ashley Book of Knots - but it is a hell of a price and having seen a copy some time ago, I am not sure it would be ideal for the decorative craft stuff I would like to do) Any ideas? Thanks Nigel
  4. Odana - alway good to compare notes... I'm curious, does yours reset if you put the engine on for a few minutes? Innisfree - the batteries were at 100% and a good steady 12.7/12.8 volts. They are relatively new and I don't believe I have a duff one. Tony - I'm not sure that running new cables will be any easier than stripping out old ones - I had intended using the 'old' cables to 'mouse' the new cables through, although this is only a theory at the moment, until I start to work out where the cables run I won't know how easy/difficult it will be.
  5. Thanks Tony, I will have a look when I get the fridge out over the BH weekend. I must say, I am not looking forward to having to replace the cable if it turns out to be too light, but I guess if it needs doing, I will just have to get on with it! I did check the fuses when I first noticed the fault occuring, or at least, the ones I could find, and everything seemed ok but a squirt of WD and a quick clean never hurts. Boats and Electricity eh?????
  6. Spooky.... We got back yesterday from 3 lovely weeks on the boat and the only problem we had (well apart from having to re-plumb the bathroom sink) was with our LEC fridge. On 'moving days' the fridge was no problem at all. On 'sitting still' days the fridge would frequently exhibit the single flash error code sometime in the late afternoon or early evening. The SmartGuage showed the battery bank at 100% and a steady 12.7 to 12.8 volts. The 'cure' was to turn the engine on for half an hour and the fridge reset itself. Annoying, but not mission critical. I have the Book of Words for the fridge and I thought that the problem was most likely caused by the voltage range being set wrongly. I wasn't going to fiddle with it while we were out, but I will have the fridge out in the next couple of weeks and have a play with what appear to be the four possible voltage settings, but I need to do some more research before I get started. I will also check the cable sizing when I get the fridge out - it is a 9 year old Liverpool Boat, I would hope the cable would be big enough, but who knows. all the above info is most useful, please keep it coming. I really don't want to have to replace the fridge!
  7. We had trouble at a couple of the locks on the south Oxford on our way to and from Croppers. Managed to get through with fenders up and lots of oomph sons boats were having more probs than us. We pulled loads of weed out of a few locks on our way down, but there was loads of floating debris around. Not surprised peeps are still having probs.
  8. COLAS Regs - Rule 13 Put simply, it is the responsibility of the overtaking boat to keep clear. Best advice as the slower boat being overtaken is to stand on - do not make any course change. Although, the regs state that even if you do change course during an overtake this cannot alter the responsibilities and will never make the overtaking boat a 'crossing' vessel. That's it on paper - always different when actually on the water though.

  12. Hopefully not too busy just yet - we are leaving the Wey on Saturday heading up to Croppers for the Festi - hoping that when we get there, probably the following Monday, we will be able to find somewhere to get ashore.
  13. Blimey... That takes me back. Altavista - (screen goes all wobbly with ethereal music playing in underneath)
  14. If you have your warp and chain marked you can make it off at the required length before you drop the hook and watch your carefully flaked warp disappear into the wet stuff in confidence.
  15. Errrrr... you don't have to use all of it! Get a bunch of the small multi coloured zip ties that B&Q sell for a quid and mark your anchor warp and chain at 10m and 5m intervals - then just pay out as much as you need, in this way you should avoid bridges. You can never make a short rope longer (and it is not a good idea to tie lengths together).
  16. Join the RYA and get to fly their nice ensign (actually a house flag) - hang on in there for a few years and for no extra money you get a nice gold one (I still wonder if I have the cojones to fly my RORC house flag on my NB?? Not having starboard spreaders makes it all a bit difficult though, so maybe I won't bother)
  17. Pretty much as above. We re-did our safety certification about a month ago. The examiner said we shouldn't be getting a paper copy as he would fill in all the details online, but he would send me PDF copies anyway. Just as well, applying to the NT for a licence they still expect you to include paper copies of BSC and Insurance. We are off out of the Wey and onto the network in a couple of weeks - we will definitely have paper copies to hand. Not that I don't trust computerised database systems, but I work in IT...
  18. Could be one person looking 5,595 times....
  19. Oooooh... I think I have 3 and apparently I am neutral!! (If I am reading it correctly). As I haven't been here very long, I will take that as a compliment. At least I don't appear to have upset anyone.... yet!
  20. Where can we find out some info? I have googled and found nothing. We might not be able to take the boat as we don't have a full weekend, but could pop in on Saturday.
  21. Just a quickie - Keep your eye on some of the online chandlers - particularly Mailspeed Marine - they aren't always the cheapest, but regularly have discount events - they have just had a 24 hour, 5% off everything sale. Otherwise, it's online research to find the best deal, but don't forget the dreaded 'Postage and Packing' which can sometimes double the price!!

  23. Chris, We have a Liverpool Boats (Pyrford Class) 56 footer, built the same year as yours. The original owners were fastidious at keeping all of the manuals that came with the boat. PM me and we can see if anything I have is of help. Nigel
  24. I'm afraid the unrecontructed yottie in me says that all fenders should be unshipped and stowed below when away from the berth. A cruising alternative (only barely acceptable to a pedant like me) seems to be to hang the fenders along the transom rail. A lot of the larger power boats are made with fender racks either along the cabin side or on the pulpit. Having said all that, I now own a steel tupperware crusher - and if I was going to be sharing locks with me, I would probably leave my fenders dangling!! Sorry, no help at all...
  25. Ahhh - I see they do a nice line in Camouflage... (Puts tin hat on and retreats)
