Doing what you do -- following the CC rule and staying in one place for a few days days and then moving on and continuing to do so around the system -- is exactly the situation for which the CC rule was introduced in the first place, and I very much doubt that anybody on CWDF objects to that, it's just as valid a way of using the canals as having a home mooring. In fact you could say it's a better use of the canals than boats which spend almost all their time as liveaboards not moving around (or holiday boats moored in marinas), but that's another argument... 😉

While only a relatively small number of boaters did this -- and mainly followed the rules -- there was no problem. The problem is that in recent years increasing numbers of boaters who don't want to move round the system (or pay for a home mooring) claim the CC exemption but then do their best to stay in one place and scream loudly (hello NBTA!) when there's any attempt to make them follow the rules and move on.

I'm sure that discouraging this behaviour is part of the reason for CART introducing the CC surcharge (again, to loud protests from the NBTA), though many would say the (rising to 25%) surcharge isn't really big enough to do this and it should be bigger. It's also this behaviour that is p*ssing off lots of other boaters who do either follow the rules or pay for a home mooring, but see others overstaying massively and getting pretty much what they're paying for but for free... 😞

Unfortunately "real CCers" like you are collateral damage here, you're suffering due to the behaviours of others, and I expect this is especially galling for those who have been CCing for many years since before this all became such a problem. But you shouldn't be blaming CART or boaters complaining about bad CC behaviour, you should be blaming the CMers who are the real culprits.

I am a London boaters forum and they are deeply unhappy at what is happening in the most. Honestly some on there are scary in their beliefs, they think knocking in mooring pins and dislodging coping stones is ok! When one their own pulls them up they hang up rapidly to attack them as if its their right to damage property to enable their cheap lifestyle

It's not only the Bristol end of the K&A that is overun with CMers, it is now Bristol itself ................

Bristol becomes van dweller capital of the UK with 800 people living at the side of the street struggling in the cost of living crisis.

Bristol has been named the van dweller capital of the UK with 800 people living at the side of street as families continue to struggle with the cost of living crisis.

There has been a surge of people living in motorhomes, caravans and converted vans in the last year as they battle not only with the economic climate but the nation-wide housing crisis.

Amongst the new community are David and Daniela Fernandes, who moved to the UK from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Mr Fernandes, 51, said: 'It's easy to move from place to place and we don't have to pay rent and all the other things.'

Bristol has been named the van dweller capital of the UK with 800 people living at the side of street

His daughter Anna, 17, is planning to move from Portugal to study law at the University of Bristol, said she will likely follow suit and live in a van if she's accepted. 'When I work I will have less bills to pay, so it's easy,' she told the Times.

According to a report by Bristol City Council, the number of vans has quadrupled since 2020, with only 100-150 people living in vans three years ago.

Bristol has become the most expensive place to rent in the UK outside of London - with the average monthly rent costing £1.734. It came after the pandemic when people left the capital for cheaper and more rural alternatives.

Residents living near the Downs in the leafy village of Clifton want to see 'tougher enforcement action' on those dwelling in vehicles, according to councillor Steve Smith.

And the same complaint as the NBTA have ...................

In May, van dwellers accused the council of trying to 'criminalise our lifestyle'.

Gareth Jones, 28, a clerical assistant who lives near Clifton Downs told MailOnline: 'It is concerning, not just for the lack of clarity in the wording of it. It is indicative of a drive to criminalise our lifestyle.

'I am generally concerned about an overly intrusive state apparatus and this makes you feel unwelcome. As soon as anyone raises a fuss, there tends to be a clamp down. I am surprised the locals are as okay as they are with us being here.'

Its going to end very badly is all I can say Alan.

I seem to recall someone queried this with HMRC when the split declaration was first introduced. They said that it was permitted for suppliers to sell only at a fixed split if they wished. In which case the customer either has to accept the supplier's split or buy elsewhere.

The problem is boats like mine, none is for propulsion as its electric, I had a row with a supplier, eventually he made it all non propulsion after I threatened him with ringing up HMRC

C&RT are not asking existing customers for evidence of a mooring contract at the point of purchasing a license . But when the customer changes the home mooring location they will ask for evidence.. C&RT may ask for evidence of a mooring contract at any time if they wish.

I am afraid they are, when I licenced the knew boat it asked me where it was moored, it was online and I couldn't get the address correct, so I went to my old boat to discover the address was missing there. CRT had to add the correct address for me

Funny they don't rely on the boaters word that he has a mooring any more, but that could cost them money

Yes my boat that has for years been in Tulleys suddenly wasn't, CRT had to pit it there same as the new one. Dont talk to me about licensing I have had a one month nightmare with them!

yes, I’ve saved myself £800 this month by not having a mortgage, £1000 by not renting, another few hundred with not paying council tax,

water rates, a lecky bill, a gas bill and so on,

mugs game, who’d choose to do that?

why choose a life of debt for oneself and then grumble at folk for opting out?

    Feeloaders Unite 👍

If some people dont pay  you will have nothing either very quickly

It's no wonder that most see them as freeloaders when you consider that someone on the NMW working 35 hours a week is earning before deductions £20,820.80 and that the average renting household now spends 42% of their income on rent; this rises to 72% in London, 'Affordable rent' is deemed 30 percent or less. Yet the freeloaders moans about paying less than 10 percent of their income on the licence.

AND they get a year of free moorings.

I follow a London boaters forum on Facebook, its interesting to say the least.

While heading down to Dorset for the rest of the weekend. Due to problems on the lines out of Waterloo, I rerouted myself via Paddington station and as the train I intended to use to Reading was leaving from platform 12 (Short ones). And it was about midday, I nipped over to Little Venice to do a quick headcount, so much for a turnout of hundreds. Wishful thinking for them as I only was able to see a small crowd of about 70 waving their silly signs. Heard quite a number of people yelling at them to 'Get a Job' or 'Have a shower' plus other things. Did not stay long as I had that train to catch.

Laughing at the subject matter, it seems that more are protesting against NBTA than for them

How's the new boat coming along?

Most of the bodges removed, I had a week off in the campervan last week so slowed down a bit. Both helms now work, instruments are all working as well. Split charging in and working, the old system removed and 3 x 300 amp on off switches installed one for the bow thruster which wasn't fused either! The rudder indicator installed but faulty, waiting for a reply from the seller. The raw water pump works great so does the Webasto. Water leaks sorted as well, we are going to try it out this weekend weather permitting

    An update for everyone.

    It works!

Although it’s not a job I will do again in a hurry. It was a nightmare to take apart - a fair few bolts snapped and the angle grinder was needed a fair bit to cut through old bolts and washers.

Using a stud remover I was able to take most of them out and I have moved onto the boat and reassembled.

No issues with listing - it’s only 400kg so not a crazy amount.

The back boiler in the one I bought was leaking - but it is integral to the Rayburn so I have cut a hole in it and inserted a much smaller back boiler which is more suited to boat use anyway.

Overall I am very pleased (and very worn out!)

I replaced the old insulation with rockwool and have put new fire tiles on everything.

    Thanks again  for the help.

The backboiler whilst big was very inefficient! The boiler I fitted was a wraparound so was on 3 sides, it runs 4 radiators with ease plus heats 200 litres of water.

My last boat I got 13 K off because I turned up on a rainy cold day, didn't piss about with a survey and offered cash by bank transfer there and then. Twenty minutes from first turning up and I owned the boat. I did similar with the one before that and a couple of others. Enforced surveys for insurance purposes are however much harder to avoid.

I got a big discount of the recent purchase so yes money talks

Has anyone in all history ever successfully sued a surveyor?

Exactly Arthur which is why it's a reluctant survey for me! I will repair it first and then survey, I don't really trust the surveyor after JohnVs experience of one!

Mad isn't it, jobs for the boys Peter 😩

Absolutely, I am taking it out for hull painting, we are spraying it navy blue, car paint better finish and longer lasting. Then it's an anti foul of some description, there are some fantastic vehicle protection systems that might be good for the job, anti rust will be zinga as it's well proven on my own boat

If that's about all they can find worth mentioning it's sounding like a good boat.

I have to have a survey on my new boat which goes against the grain for me, but for full insurance I will have to do it

LiFePO4 batteries are WAY better is some respects, and FAR worse than LA batteries in other respects.

You and Peter are very similar. Ridiculously extreme in your views on batteries but in opposing directions.

That's because I have had no problems with mine Mike, they are reliable and long lasting easy to look after so what are the problems?
