  1. From tomorrow I will be responsible for the care of a Gardner 3L2 engine in our NB.  I am about to join the Gardner engine forum but have seen  reference to a Gardner Owners Club.  I can find no trace of a Gardner Owners Club on the internet so am I right to assume they are one and the same?

The original engine was made in 1932 so is 2 years younger than my elderly father who remembers Gardner engines in busses and lorries around Manchester.  Any further suggestions for a bit of light reading (if there is such a thing lol) would be appreciated.

     The article says the steerer uses a mobility scooter and quotes him as saying that from his sitting position he couldn't see the boat;

With an unbelievable statement (admission) like that I can see the US law firms already rubbing their hands in glee at the prospect of litigation by the ‘victims’.  It’s going to cost someone a fortune in damages never mind what was done to the two boats.

    This.

We got rid of our liability.

Don't underestimate how much it costs to own and run a boat, not only in money but your time.

    Interesting.

I bought a house in NI in 2004.  By 2007 it had increased in value by 100%.  Step forward the financial crash and the house is down 50% so in effect I am back to where I started.  I’m not bothered as the house is Home not an investment.  However the people who bought in 2007 are down 50% and in substantial negative equity.  Yhey cant sell therefore can’t move or in effect change jobs if it isnt local.  Now that’s what I call a liability.

I have just spent a substantial amount of money (to me) on a Narrowboat. I will possibly/potentially lose money on this in the long run through depreciation but I couldn’t care less.  I will be enjoying the fruits of my labour.  You have to make the most of life as you are a long time dead.  Treating life as a financial spreadsheet seems a waste to me.

  4. If you are a 3 customer

100gb on homefi for £28p - excludes London and other areas not listed though

100gb unlimited mins unlimited texts £20pm

The above deals are subject to 12 month contracts and are available for a few quid more if non 3 customers

Apologies just noticed you asked for pay as you go

Oh, ok. I thought he set up Paypal, which was bought by e-bay, I didn't realise he was a cofounder of e-bay.

I think you may be right.  Me getting confused again.  Just swap PayPal for eBay lol.

off now so I don’t distract from the thread

Spooky indeed! That's our boat and yes I'm still polishing. Article was by previous owner - and the gist of it was that you'll never loose money on a boat if you keep it polished............

Absolutely correct and nothing wrong with having some pride in ones possessions lol

I see that the same 2LW is back on eBay again. Claims to be in Wales this time rather than Aberdeen. No doubt people will fall for the apparent scam again. The "vendor" has even used the same photograph!

You would think that if Elon Musk can invent a rocket that re lands in a vertical position after delivering a payload into space or manufacturing Tesla that he could have designed software which identifies such scams when he set up eBay.

    Yippee!

Correct choice of engine too (well, I would say that). Have fun with your engine and with the craft which surrounds it.

Wasn't this boat advertised or mentioned on the forum a couple of weeks ago?

It was on here in the ‘for sale’ section where I first saw mention of her.

    Congratulations!  http://gardnerengineforum.co.uk/ ????

Yes the engine is 2 years younger than my elderly father.  I intend joining as having seen one in the flesh I’m hooked.

Here is a quirk,  I have a dreadful memory but I seem to recall a magazine article featuring ‘eclipse 2’ which was a Hudson with a Gardner LW engine.  Would you be the (polishing) star of that article.  If so it’s spooky how I can remember that whilst forgetting lots of other things.

  9. The ‘journey’ may have taken over 5 years but we are now the proud owners of a NB.

Nellie No1 is a 70’ Trad by the Warwickshire Fly Boat Company with a Gardner 3L2 engine.

it will be a fortnight before we get onboard but I am truly looking forward to the next stage.

Just watch 3 network if you have a deal with them.

I took the 40gb wifi deal with binge netflix at £16, first month all was well, the data stopped at 40gb the day before the set monthly contract date ended, so I just used my phone to tether everything rather than buy a top up. Same next month.

I checked my account just before new year to find £58 had been taken rather than £16.

The data had reached 40gb the day before the cut off again, and they had let it run, and the extra 4.2gb cost me £42 !!!!!!

I called to complain and they said I hadn't asked to be limited to 40gb - I pointed out that it had worked the first two months so why was it allowed to happen?

They then said they sent me 3 text messages warning me - I asked how I was supposed to read a text message on a wifi unit without a screen tucked away in a cupboard - in fact, how would i know one was sent - they couldn't understand this - I had to explain what a mini unit was.

I also complained about the ridiculous price of 4GB of data - something I could have topped up for £5 - they circled back to the first two arguments again.

I threatened with the the ombudsman - put on hold for 10 minutes and eventually was guaranteed cut off at 40gb and refunded most of the fee - no apologies though.

Thank you.  My wife got the 100GB homefi deal yesterday in NI.  The salesman warned the wife about this issue and told her to ring 3 when set up and for them to cap the account at 100GB of data for this very reason

  11. I am considering having the 2 pack epoxy system for our NB Hull.  I have read that there is a new process whereby an alternative product to grit/sand is used in the blasting process which is kinder to the hull.  Due to my cognitive issue I cannot remember where I read about it, what it is called and which company offers this service.  I know debdale marina use the grit blasting process and spray molten metal.

can anyone assist with refreshing my memory and any other views on my thoughts?

That said EE is reckoned to have the best national coverage, followed by 3,  with O2 and Vodafone bringing up the rear. If you intend to cover a wide area, it may be prudent to use two SIM cards, each on a different network.

I was getting carried away a little.  I have EE and the wife has 3 so I think I will now keep it that way.  I hope to do some extended cruising round the system so hopefully we will get a signal between the two of us lol.

  13. Thank you all for the info and suggestions.

I didn’t realise that you could power the Home-fi router via 12v so that’s even better.  So the 3 Home fi route it is.  The 100GB data deal is not available in all areas e.g London.  In those areas I believe you are limited to 40GB.  Fortunately I live in NI so I suspect the 100GB will be available.  I may also buy the mi-fi and swap the SIM card between the two for comparison purposes.

  14. As we prepare for our new (to us) boat I am looking at on board wi-fi.  As we hope not to spend too much time at our home in NI I was considering cancelling our BT broadband and line rental.  The wife and I have mobiles with lots of data so was going to replace the broad band with a 3 homefi with a large data allowance for when we are home and taking it on the boat when cruising using the onboard 240v via inverter.

The alternative is to get a 3 mi-fi, again with a large data allowance.

What are the esteemed members view on the above and am I missing something obvious?

If every uk city put their money in the pot and everyone who bought tickets to go to them did the same and just stopped home for the evening as a good gesture a bit like giving to charity the millions and millions of pounds could be put to good use.

Now that is a suggestion which I support wholeheartedly.  Sadly it’s far too sensible for it to be implemented by the powers that be and the ‘I’m alright Jack’ brigade.

A massive housing crash is what we need PDQ but it never happens.

Trust me it does!  In about 1990 I had just settled the financial side of my divorce including our property in London.  Basically I bought her half then the market crashed.  Talk about timing lol

I fully agree about a housing crash even though I own a property.  Not everyone wants to purchase a property but it does allow those who do to get on board.  There are many people who for their own circumstances prefer to rent.

Is your daughter not interested in moving to a branch of the force in a less expensive part of the country? It is, of course, axiomatic that policing is a job which, unlike many business jobs which could relocate elsewhere as noted earlier, needs personnel in London.

She tells me that all the different forces are poaching each other’s officers so transferring isn’t an issue but sadly for me she wants to live in London.  She is seriously considering leaving the police and the stories she tells me I can fully understand why.  Senior management are gutless and the cuts to their budgets has effectively made them impotent and as for being politically correct!

In France and, I think, Germany too, renting is seen as the norm rather than as a socially inferior option, as many people seem to view it here.

Historically you are correct though that trend is reversing primarily I suspect through them watching the profit made from housing in the U.K.  I do not know when but I genuinely believe social unrest is coming to the U.K. primarily through housing and wealth inequality issues.  I am 60 years old so one those baby boomers who was fortunate enough to get on the property ladder in the mid 80’s (when interest rates on a mortgage were 15%!).

My daughter returned to London and joined the Metropolitan police.  There is absolutely no way she can afford to live in London on her salary due to the cost of housing, both purchasing or renting.  Renting is more expensive than purchasing in London due to the size of the deposits required.  Therefore, sadly, the bank of mum and Dad has to supplement her income in order that she can work!  There are probably thousands in our situation.  What happens when the baby boomer generation becomes extinct ?

The hedge fund barons are buying huge swathes of property for rental purposes to cash in on the shortage thus further aggravating the situation.  More and more residential REITs are coming to the financial markets if proof were needed for my thesis.

It can only end in tears!

Just in case people may question my political persuasion, I used to think Ghengis Khan was a communist though in later years I have relented a little!

  20. I have just read the article and whilst I have no personal experience of the London boat scene I do with regard to the scandalous house/rent prices in London.  It is a well written article and as I currently sit in a Starbucks in London I look around and genuinely wonder how those on the minimum wage can possibly live in London where they work.

I recently passed a 2 bed flat which was our first purchase in London in the mid 80’s.  It cost £55K and was a struggle then.  It is now valued at £400K and I believe to rent they are about £1800pcm!  How on earth can youngsters and those on minimum wage possibly afford that?  How I wish I still owned that flat lol

i can fully understand why the situation on the London canals has come about.
