  1. Ratho Inn at Ratho is another pub worth visiting, used to be owned and managed by Ronnie Rusac a staunch supporter of the central belt canals and campaigned for years along with many others to get the union canal into the navigable status it now enjoys. In days gone by when I lived in a canalside cottage at Winchburgh the union was blocked by the M8 motorway, blocked at wester hailes by road, blocked at Broxburn by road, blocked at Linlithgow by a road , and unable to connect with the forth and Clyde canal at Falkirk. So to all who now cruise the union or considering whether to cruise it, remember those who've worked tirelessly together to achieve what we now have today, not least LUCS Canal Society at Linlithgow and WUCS canal society at Winchburgh . If I had to choose between the union or forth and Clyde then it would be the union every time, but then I'm biased because of the many backbreaking hours of voluntary work that I have personally put into this canal and the pleasure it now gives that others now reap the rewards that the enthusiasts of yesteryear worked so hard to achieve. Enjoy:)

  3. Spotted this boat in Penkridge recently, can't remember which way it was heading but will keep eyes peeled.
  4. Recently saw a boat with the name Charlotte here in Penkridge, can't remember which way it was heading or the exact day but it was recent. Sorry can be any more help than that but will keep eyes peeled.

  6. I think it was quite right for him/her to get a bollocking Surely though common sense should prevail whether river or canal and the bottom line should be whatever is needed to ensure safe navigation with due consideration to other users should be the norm. I think it's fair to note that not everyone's eyesight is perfect and some people's night vision is not as good as others, so some will feel safer having the way ahead light up and some will feel port, starboard, and stern lights are sufficient . This thread reminds me of the arseholes who drive their cars with rear fogs on when the visability is good, or don't have their headlights on dipped beam when visablity is poor
  7. I don't understand why we need to make a distinction, one can find floating debris on both canals and rivers
  8. Once hit a floating log whilst doing a moonlight no lights cruise, was down below at the the time and o/h was steering, thought she had rammed the bank Now if I move at night I wish to see not only the banks either side but also anything that's floating.
  9. I remember it well, was on the Arethusa training ship at the time moored at Upnor on the Medway. My hammock was hung adjacent to the door to the boat landing which needed to be kept open for access in case the emergency boat crew was needed. It was bloody freezing ! There was a quick glimpse of the Arethusa in the programme which bought back both happy and horrible memories. When the tide went out on the Medway huge lumps of ice were left behind, even on a vessel that size the sound of ice scraping along the side of the hull was spooky. Arethusa now sits in New York harbour having been returned to her original name "Peking" and is now a maritime museum
  10. I find my 30 footer quite adequate for single person live aboard, plus the fact that moorings and marina's are cheaper for the shorter vessels
  11. Just wondering how easy it would be to convert a car headlight to N/B use, then you'd have main beam and dipped beam to avoid dazzling oncoming vessels
  12. My own boat sale is being handled by Great Heywood, very impressed with their service so far. Don't suppose you'd consider a 30 footer at just under 15k Delta9
