  1. Filler will crack. A nice hardwood strip, you could secure it with tiny countersunk screws and hide the screws with decorative upholstery nails.
  2. There were two blue-shirted chaps peering through that fence as we came up the top lock. Monday, I think.
  3. Came up Bosley two days ago, very little water at the bottom end of the flight, one pound drained dry overnight. Now at Bugsworth, hoping we can get home again! Levels on the UPF and top end of the Macc seem ok.

  5. If the bulkhead fitting was drilled out so that the pipe passes through it uncut, then that wouldn’t be a joint? Mind you, you couldn’t tell that without taking it to bits.
  6. Been not there for at least 22 years.

  9. 20 minute entry window at Saltersford, 10 minutes at Preston Brook. As far as I recall the timing of Saltersford only started when the IWA National was held at Preston Brook, during which both Barnton and Saltersford were timed and operated as a single unit, and afterwards Saltersford was left on timed entry. it seemed to work satisfactorily for a couple of centuries before that, although reinstating the steam tug would have been nice…
  10. Given the seemingly constant litany of short stoppages (so many paddles and their rods?), I suspect there are a lot of people on the water this year who won’t be back voluntarily next year.
  11. Midland should provide you with a means to get rid of the old one: https://www.gov.uk/electricalwaste-producer-supplier-responsibilities ETA: I think I took the old one to the council tip recycling centre. They didn’t ask what voltage it was. Further ETA: https://www.midlandchandlers.co.uk/weee-policy
  12. Dutton dry dock Runcorn dry dock Hesfords slipway ABC (Anderton) floating dry dock Uplands Marina (Anderton) slipway Wincham Wharf crane and (I think) dry dock Middlewich dry dock (in the lock flight) Kings Lock slipway Orchard Marina dry dock is no more.

  14. There are some bits of the Macc where HV power lines run across the canal at a very shallow angle, so you are passing under and almost parallel to them for some distance. Trundling along there one particularly hot and dry summer day, wearing a short sleeved shirt and with my bare forearm resting along the brass tiller tube, there was enough induced voltage to cause a tingle.

  16. Accosting? As described what is alleged is assault by beating, and should be reported to the police.

  20. 45ft boat. Going up in the northern T&M locks with their vicious forward pull, I always used to try to lurk just shy of the bottom gates (being careful not get anything caught between the gates), and stay there with reverse gear. Worked-ish, but sooner or later the flow would catch the boat and once you were moving there was about 30ft in which to accelerate rapidly towards the top gates that no amount of reverse would stop. More recently I’ve tried riding the cill “plate” and gate, but provided they are good condition, and I watch the boat like a hawk. Seems to work better. Not at Red Bull though, where the cill plates have horizontal half round bars across them.
  21. Window dressing? Surely not! ?
  22. Only when he or she is speaking “ex cathedra”, so to speak.
  23. I seem to recall somewhere in previous discussions a distinction being made between natural persons, who could do anything the law did not forbid, and bodies created by statute, who could do only what their statutes permitted. But I could be wrong.
  24. It a contract valid which purports to permit someone to do something which the law does not permit them to do?
