In case anyone is interested 16/04/2024 13:16 The team are making good progress, and have installed an access track in the field above the cutting to allow larger plant and wagons to take material away so we can safely access the site. Long reach machines are being delivered which will then allow us to excavate down the side of the cutting to access the canal. We’re also installing access roads to the other slip site, and preparing the ground for temporary storage of materials and access down the bank. We’re still on programme to open the navigation for the middle of May. We'll provide further updates as soon as we receive them.

if your wooden tiller handle is the normal 6", I have seen them advertised longer at 9" which might make the length you need - lot cheaper than a new complete tiller

The C&RT guy who was interviewed recently mentioned that the road across the field would allow them to get heavy machinery near the failure point so they could reduce the height of the remaining edge, thus allowing them to get that machinery down nearer the canal line. Then I guess it is just a matter then of clearing the spoil from the canal bed. I can only assume that the farmer was way more accommodating than some have been in the past - unless C&RT just threw a huge payoff his way on day one.

If C&RT don't think you have one you will have a problem next time you try to license your boat.

I believe beerbeer etc was referring to Hatton, and having come up there last week can confirm all 21 are fine using one paddle to save energy!

^^^^ thanks but they only sell the hinge, I want to buy a complete finished item at the length I want. At the moment I don't have a garage to use as a workshop, no vice, not too many tools etc so want a finished product. Tried Pro-Cast but ........... well, won't go there.

I'm going to totally confuse things now! In general in a wide lock, Yes to all the above, but I have seen a navigational note on the wide locks on the T&M that the ground paddles are built differently and to pin the boat against the side, open the opposite ground paddle first. We haven't been that way for many years so can't remember anything about them, but the warning is listed in the Canalplan route guide website.

^^^^ then open the gate paddle on the opposite side of the lock and it will continue to hold the boat on that side - by then you can start on the other ground paddle and gate paddle.

Looks like all the work is happening on the access route - although 1 - 2 weeks to build a working pad is a bit much. For example, to cut a new camp site in the bush (during the wet season) we took one day, and the camp move for 150 people was half a day, that included living quarters, workshop, kitchens, showers, literally everything for 'living'. The guys would go off to the work site at dawn, and come back to a new site with everything working that evening. Those were the days!
