  1. Seeing as there’s a refreshing interest on here regards the BCN, what books or maps would anyone recommend as a good read? If there is a must read for anyone interested in the BCN what would it be? Personally I’d suggest starting off with the Waterscape Map of the BCN as a good introduction to the area it covers. Include bloggers and websites too, but I’m more wondering about reference books.
  2. Coventry has always given me the heebie-jeevies
  3. Maybe, but I see there are a few people who have made it into a life’s work to understand and write about the BCN’s past. Every time I learn a little bit more about the BCN, I realise how little I will ever now about it. The BCN is fascinating.
  4. Was never a favourite beer, but sad to see them go. Had plenty of fun on the guided tour evenings. They sponsored lots of things around the county, including the Falmouth beer festival. they’ll be missed.
  5. try searching Broken-hearted Skinner's Brewery issues heartfelt message to customers
  6. Can the Hancox map of 1773 be relied on for detail? It looks too simplistic a map. The Snape map of ‘77, also predating the alterations, seems a more trustworthy/reliable/accurate record. I would assume a first hand record/ survey? So maybe there’s always been a bend in the canal at that point?
  7. How about the junction and bottom lock are in the original place. And perhaps the fact that the additional new lock (now no20) is on a bend would be evidence of rerouting the channel to accommodate a new lock. Keeping the old channel working while they build the new lock along side and diverting the water when ready?
  8. supporting the idea that the junction was originally south of where it is today.
  9. Goat! Now I don’t think I’ve ate goat. And can’t say I’ve ever seen it for sale. I guess it’s something you’d have to order special at the butchers? oh, and it’s all round to yours for Christmas then? 🤣🤣

  11. Must say, I don’t ever think I’ve bought a Turkey ? I’ll go lamb, cow or pig. Bought goose once, very nice but far far too expensive. Could have bought half a lamb for the price!
  12. Makes you think…a boat with a good trading business could cover that. I wonder if they’d take a month up front? 😃 mind, legally I think it’s 28 days limit for temporary trading 🤷‍♀️ either way..
  13. The surrounding fields will have retained some evidence of channels having been dug and refilled? or no?
  14. 🤷‍♀️ certainly no fishing permitted.
  15. May I ask what happens on a Monday afternoon? I loved the small indoor market opposite. i think there’s at least 3 butchers in there 👍
  16. It’s all odd. Everything about the sign is odd. 2 days only? £25 charge? The charge is a ridiculous sum of money to pay to be there. It’s a charge to deter over staying, it’s really a fine. But CRT can’t issue fines. So 🤷‍♀️ And Widebeams? Obviously a generic/default sign with no thought given. And as you say we pay a license which allows us to moor (and for up to 14 days at a time).
  17. Exactly. 👍 But as we’ve seen elsewhere CRT are trying to bring in charges for moorings. Whether for booking or extended stay over.
  18. Why wouldn’t these buildings be the buildings originally marked on the map of 1773? And the other buildings back the other side of the bridge, including what looks like a toll house here, built later? To add; From the little I have read I understand there was a plan to divert the flight so that it crossed the S&W and met the Shroppie to avoid high Toll charges.
  19. Agreed not a favourite but bearable. It used to always have one of it’s beers on offer, perhaps a pound cheaper than the rest, can’t remember. And of course there’s the outside bench where you can sit and watch the boats.
  20. One hopes that’s the case. As for conspiracy...always worth considering 😃
  21. Absolutely not no, wouldn’t have a clue. I’m just thinking there’s more people, either directly or indirectly, getting a slice of the DEFRA funding given to CRT. So to stop the funding would have further knock on effects. And for that reason I can’t see the funding simply ending. I really don’t know. Just a thought I wanted to explore.
  22. I used to stay for a week or so at a time at Stubbing Wharf. If I remember right there’s room for two maybe even three boats at a push. Yes, it says one day but it was rarely used through the winter. And that little stretch, with the pub car park below has a very pleasant community of boaters. My experience is it easily ices over too
