  1. There are a huge number of hire boats from below Caen Hill to Bath, so the issue you will have is other hire boats. You will find moorings at Bradford and Bathampton and if you arrive early afternoon at the top of Bath, so plan to go onto the river and moor at Avon Steet. Also do some of the river and return to Bath.

If you don't like other boats you'll hate it, and you will probably get shouted at to slow down regardless of how slow you go. However if you enjoy looking at boats that are different in many unique ways and mixing it with other boats (I.e. like the Llangollen in summer) you will enjoy it. Enjoy.

    Hi all,

We are looking to get our 60' boat painted. We are based on the Trent & Mersey, but are willing to travel a bit for the right job. Anyone have any recommendations?

Really want the job done properly, ideally with some kind or guarantee. Have heard a few horror stories so want to be careful!

Also, whats is the general view about painting in a wet dock vs a dry?

    Thanks in advance :)

Trent Valley Marine at Aston Marina T&M. They have an out of the water heated building. Had mine back to metal painted 8 years ago, very pleased, still looking great.

It wasnt meant to be nice, or otherwise. It was just a factual response. I have had fifty years experience, some of it professional, on ships and boats and wearing a lifejacket isnt a choice thing. To be honest, when narrowboating unless I was on a river I didnt wear one ( I am stupid ) however, my kids/grandkids were not given a choice until they were adults.

Then the above should have been your response, not your cheap jibe for a rather inappropriate laugh - it degrades a useful thread. I let my kids take their jackets off when inside the boat, that's all I was saying.

And what would that do to the availability of rented accommodation for those who are not in a position to buy?

You would introduce the policy slowly by winding up tenancy periods over a number of years, to gently weed out small private landlords, with less buy-to-let demand the house market would correct. There would still be rented accommodation, it would be owned by rental companies with long term interests.

How would that increase the amount of accommodation in the UK?

The main issue is that it is owned by the wrong people with the wrong interests. These private interests are damaging, a little bit of government interference is needed to correct.

  5. Absolutely,  house ownership is good, buy to let is distructive. As per other countries, tennets should have the legal right to a 10 year tenancy without no fault evictions. This would discourage most private landlords. The ridiculous situation of tenants having no security and landlords being exploited by serial defaulters serves no one.

The situation im in is basically Im not going to buy a house anytime soon at this rate, Renting is just silly and dumping money into a pit and If i did i want to be in a small house in the country anyway, I would rather save towards that in that regard

A house in the country is the end goal, not the start. To get there you need to use your earned income wisely. Financially secure people who earnt their weath didn't start with a house in the country they start with an ex-local authority house in need of update in some dump.  I was next to the M6, we only had peace and quiet when there was a crash on the motorway. Every town has an affordable area, buy one, do it up a bit, bank your mortgage payments, 3 years move and repeat. In 10 years you'll have a decent place in a reasonable area. Then you can refine your goals, and make those all important life choices without being poor, I.e. rent the house and live on a boat.

If you use all your savings to buy a boat you will be curtailing your life choices, everything you own will be in a depreciating asset, there will be no way back and you will be poor. When you are fit and active this may not be so bad, but when you get that little bit older, or have some health issues you will be screwed.

The one bit I do agree with, avoid renting when working.

I have a webasto but now there is a strange sound as if a hammer is knocking on metal

Check that the webasto fuel pump rubber mounting is still fixed in its intended position and that the fuel pump or its piping/hoses are not making contact with anything else, I.e. the hull.

    sometimes threatening population

Yes be careful, alcoholism and drugs is an unfortunate reality. You may like to wait for the summer as they seem to be a little less aggressive, although you will then have to suffer the bongos.

Thank you Tony, so best bet is to take the bottom hose off the skin tank I guess, my only concern then would be if I have t obleed the calorifer

Buy a hand drill mounted pump and two bits of old garden hose pipe. For the hose from the engine to the bottom of the skin tank, take it off at the engine end. Catch what comes out in a bucket, then feed the pump hose down the engine hose to the bottom of the skin tank and use the drill pump to pump the old coolant into a container. Takes all of 10 minutes and minimal spillage. Then change your coolant hoses for new and refill.

We use Asec garage bolts on all doors and side hatches - positioned so that the 2-inch bolt slips in behind the steel frames. Star key, stainless escutcheons for exterior operation (otherwise just interior opening, as on hatches), have lasted 12 years now without complaint.

    Like these:

When these bolts are extended in the locked position, can you manually push the bolt back in, or is it locked in position? Thanks.

    Yes ok I'll try that.

The webasto reconditioners sometimes crank up the CO2 adjustment setting.  They do this to ensure that the unit does not coke up, as they have no idea what exhaust you are going to fit to it. The result is a very noisy unit that runs inefficiently - but it will run through their 'warranty'. So if the fan is just running very fast as opposed to being knackered using the software may help, as you can adjust the setting, but it's trial and error, and you may have a knackered fan.

Our back boiler pump has just died (perfect timing as its getting chilly, although thankfully not midwinter...) What do people recommend using? I've seen the solar pumps: https://www.amazon.co.uk/TS-Trade-Circulation-Silent-Coupler/dp/B07M7J72L6/ref=pd_lpo_1?pd_rd_i=B07M7J72L6&psc=1 but will that do? The price seems too good to be true!

Also, what should I refill the system with, as I can't see that its been fitted with a cut off valve, so will probably end up draining a bit of it before I can block the 'ole.

These are the car type ones, also good and low cost. Hose connections.

What is the best Webasto model you can buy from a scrapyard for heating 24/7 ?

I use a thermo top V from a jaguar s type, £25, it does not have onboard water pump control which is ideal for me as I use the same water circuit via a heat exchanger for waste heat from the engine so control it with a simple delay drop off relay circuit. The low voltage cut off is set at 10V so no issues, BUT you cannot just use a contact to start it, you have to use W-bus so I bought one of those webasto oval timers from Russia ebay. Alternatively buy the same unit from a Land Rover Discovery for about £45, these have on board pump control, (however do not buy the TTV EVO, as you cant start these from w-bus). If you search around ebay you can also get one with the fuel pump thrown in and look for one with the plugs on and loom cut so you don't have to buy plugs.  Looms are available from Poland via ebay but postage cost is high, it is simple to DIY just extend the cut off plugs. There is a guy on ebay who sells a home made W-bus interface card, search for a seller called 'onlywithpaypal'. I have used one of his pcbs for my hot tub for a few years now. Buy all the other bits you need from mvheating.co.uk. and if you need any plugs have a look at the shop on the Land Rover DISCO forum which is very well priced. Great little project. Obviously I did all mine a few years back, but I doubt much has changed.

I think I'm possibly getting confused with the terminology. In the manual Webasto show pressurised systems without header tanks,, but it looks like they use mains water pressure?

The 'mains' water pressure can be readily provided by your water pump with an accumulator. However as per the manual you need an expansion vessel as opposed to a header tank, the advantage being it can be positioned low down in the boat.

Further "tests" show no delay on using the cold taps in galley or bathroom, slight delay (~5 seconds) on the hot taps,

You should also have an expansion bottle on the hot side, if the expansion bottle pressure has dropped below the pump cut out pressure it will be acting as a second accumulator on the hot side only (depends on where the NRV is located) has your calorifier PRV been dribbling recently?
