  1. Has anyone ever done a litmus paper test on their canal water? I remember many years ago, a distinctive acidic smell from the water spray in the locks around Nantmich. I wonder if it effects Hull corrosion.
  2. Seems that Humax are getting out of the Freesat scene. I thought I could just go and buy a Freesat box made by loads of different manufacturers (Sony, Samsung etc etc) anywhere but it appears that the only one is called an Arris. Can anyone clarify the situation. I also have a Sky box (DRX595L) but it doesn’t seem to have a “record “ facility even though the remote has. ? What going on??
  3. It’s a Humax HDR-1000S/GB/500G “Freesat+”. must admit all the tech talk is like Chinese to me!?
  4. My HUMAX Sat+ has just wiped off all my recordings going back 6 years? It still receives satellite channels but won’t record so I suppose the recording side of the unit is kaput. Any suggestions as to any possible repair or a good replacement gratefully received.
  5. I’ve got hundreds of unwanted “ people you may know”? is there any way to get rid of them all, without having to go through them individually??
  6. Am I right in thinking that multi millionaire players are whinging because they are being told not to over celebrate when they score, due to COVID? I feel so sorry for them?

  11. Are you sure it’s not Humber Keel NIDD cos Short Boat NIDD is for sale in France I think. https://www.apolloduck.eu/boat/barges-peniche/649694#map
  12. Remember this is supposed to be about Gardner engines!!!!
  13. That’s something I’ve never heard of before. Con rods stretching? Is that an accepted fact?
  14. Less than a minute. My 4LW soon builds up to 45 pounds oil pressure. But even then I would never over-rev the engine. There used to be a TV advert (Castrol GTX?) showing an engine screaming in pain when someone revved it up from cold ?
  15. I start up with a few revs above tickover (Gardner 4LW), then gradually go up to about 800 rpm whilst I untie, then set off on tickover and gradually build up to around 700 on canals. I could never put my engine onto maximum rpm from cold!? Surely you’ve got to wait until the oil gets through to the bearings at the very least?
  16. I notice there’s a COCK boat pond. My understanding is that they were normally known as COG boats in Yorkshire. Cock boats was more a LIVERPOOL term. Hmm.
  17. I helped a friend with his very old 60 ton barge and we ended up pushing seven (7!) rings of packing into the stuffing box. The shaft was maybe 60mm diameter, so pretty big, but 7 rings seemed excessive. Anyone know if it’s normal on a big prop shaft?
  18. Certainly looks very dry. I’m surprised.
  19. Strangely enough, on my set up, the plate that is held in place by the 2 bolts to squeeze the packing, has moved towards the packing (ie.astern) and a gap has developed away from the locked nuts as if it’s been sucked into the stern tube.
  20. Good point. The fuse is probably a few years old. I’ve replaced it and will do every couple of years from now on. Obviously when the belt breaks, the temperature sensor switches the genny off but it looks like the fuse blew first!
