  1. I'd LOVE to do the C&G but they stopped running it in Kent & I can't stretch to the cost of doing it in London. You're so blessed to have been able to do it! What's the difference in effect between K glass & regular float?

  3. Alyson. You have my admiration for the precious metal clay jewellery. I had a brief go but couldn't get on with it. Give me a glass cutter & I'm happy though. Leaded lights, copper foiling & glass appliqué are what I specialise in, though I'm starting a fusing course in September. Which fusing glass do you use?
  4. Woodstock: if you still fancy having a go at stained glass, there's a new company near Canterbury teaching it on 2 - 3 day short courses. (OK, so it's my company!) The website's not quite up & running yet, but when it is, it'll be at www.creativeretreatsandholidays.co.uk In the mean time, anyone who's interested is welcome to drop me a line at tollgate@tottleworth_to_dinner.plus.com (Please take out _to_dinner before replying ;-) I'm not on the forum very often, so e-mail would be best. We teach copper foil, leaded lights and glass appliqué; our special rate until the end of 2014 is £50 per day per person even for a class of one, so no worries about minimum class sizes.

  6. The Cobras are regular walky-talkies, & not marine band aren't they? Marine band is great - can't beat finding out about a graveller BEFORE it looms up behind you at speed - but it's an offence to use them to communicate to people on land, with the exception of lock keepers (not lock wheelers), VTS & port / marina staff. Using them for communicating with crew on land could get you a stiff fine. (Waste of valuable beer money...) Spot on, Geoffwales.

  8. One more thing to think about, while thinking of people falling in... I once found myself dunked in the Medway. Despite having a buoyancy aid on over my boating waterproofs, my wet clothes were heavy enough to weigh me down such that my head was below the surface. Had there not been a rescuer close by, I wouldn't still be around today. So now when I go on rivers, I don't rely on life jackets / buoyancy aids; I make sure that the rest of my clothing is made of non-absorbant synthetic fabrics (the type of stuff that comes out of the washing machine nearly dry). If nothing else, it'll make me easier for someone else to drag out of the water.
  9. The Forth & Clyde through Glasgow. Your passage through the lift / swing bridges (can't remember which) and locks is dictated by BWS, so you can't go through at 6am while the yobs are in bed. Had a very nasty experience there as a result, with a drugged-up Glaswegian (I'm sure most of them are lovely, just not this particular specimen)trying to smash the boat up while we were in a lock. The 5 BWS staff just stood & watched. The western side of the Rochdale is very hard work, but we had no problems with the locals there; going through any "dodgy" area in the lashing rain always helps :-)
  10. Me too. Have you worked out how to add these nifty sig files yet?
  11. I'd second the Coachmakers in Hanley, on Lichfield St. ST1 3EA. It's about 15 minutes' walk from the Black Prince yard, less if you're moored on the Caldon (more if you've got short legs). It's been under threat of closure for some time, as the council wanted to move the road to where the pub is, but it's still in the current GBG & is well worth a visit. Fantastic real ales, but not a foody pub.
