  5. Hi everyone I have a mobile contract for which I can tether to my laptop to surf the net I am wondering how I can boost the signal whilst on board without having to pay some fee to 3 ie the hauwei thingy. I am paying a contract for unlimited internet etc and would like to boost the signal. I don't mind purchasing equipment just don't want to be tied to contract or pay as you go as phone comes with all I need I just want to boost the signal. Please feel free to share problem areas for signal and any hints and tips will be gratefully appreciated. I did see some weird thing on ebay for some aerial style booster up to 5 miles for 35 pounds but cannot find it now I wish id saved it now !!! Ive no idea if it was the right thing but sounded interesting. Regards
  6. Hi all I was wondering how long on average does it take to do a lock.?? this will be single handed. Do you have you any tips or pointers. How do i prevent boat getting caught on the cill if I am winding the paddles??? How to prevent a disaster may be useful too !!! thanks for all your support !!!
  7. HI Everyone I have looked at a boat I am interested in but would like to ask a few questions. I apologise in advance im sure this has been asked many times. thank you in advance for your replys. it has 2 leisure batteries and a starter battery running on 12v system running 12 v fridge there are no power sockets but a small 300 watt invertor and a few 12 v cigarette sockets located near the tv so limited use of appliances. I like the idea of a microwave but realise it has not got the capability and will use a lot of juice besides theres no 240v. it has led lights fitted throughout and few small wall lamps.. I feel the system might be a little primitive as the boat is 1980 and may have original wiring and appreciate any tips advice. I am wondering how much an inverter system for plugs costs and the fitting of course. What sort to go for???? do Am I using lots of power ?? I am worried I will be sat with candle light and the fire which I do like but with tv lol !!!. I like to watch tv at night and maybe charge the mobile Will I need to charge batteries everyday with the engine running an for how long??? I have a solar radio for music, a laptop to run I though id buy a spare battery to charge when engines is running, a mobile to charge at least once a day and wonder what advice you may be able to offer. I thought I might get an extra battery or 2 and invest in solar panel too ?? the hot water is that calorifier thing and the stove, no gas heater. I like this boat particulary its openness. from rear kitchen lounge diner bathroom bedroom at front of boat. I appreciate any links and further reading you can provide I understand its a huge topic. Thank you all.
  8. thanks for all your posts !!!! keep em coming !!! Really useful reply's cheers . souladventurer coming to a location near you soon!!! fingers crossed.
  9. Hi everyone I am sure this has been talked about before. so apologies in advance Can anyone enlighten me about a rough cost of overplating a 50 ft narrowboat. Thank you
  10. why don't they put speed limits for bikes ive seen them darting along the towpath and its distressing to those on foot too with there ignorant "ring ring" meaning get out of the way or get run over !!!! just my thought from being in Bradford upon avon last summer walking up towpath asking boat owners lots of questions.
  11. hi why don't they reopen the thousands of miles that beeching closed in the 50s an 60s at least it will provide valuble transport to people.
  12. yes my apologies I didn't realise that there were 5 pages in total !!!!
  13. Hi Everyone just wondering how much is coal is and what size bags do they come in ?? and all the different names ??? is coal not just coal ?? I see they seem to burn different lengths , heat etc. whats the most cost effective and recommended. How much to get through a cold cold week ??? Are boats that cold in winter I mean you can always put a jumper on. or a onesie (not that I own one yet but a thought) Thanks for all your input. valuable as always !!!! Thanks I heard on some canals they do coal straight form there own barge is this common over the network??? I would like to support canal trade when my dream comes true. hopefully soon.
  14. Hi Everyone I would like to gain some insight into the perils of canal boating in this difficult period of weather we have all suffered with over the last few months. Has the extreme rainfall prevented cruising due to exceptional high water?? locks closed , local flooding etc. Do the C& R T put closures on Has this had major impacts on your plans or have you just had to moor somewhere longer until the situation improves?? Has this prevented you from continuous cruising ??. if a canal was shut due to circumstances of nature ( Floods further up canal, ice snow etc or C & RT stoppages) under the " continuous cruising "" rules if I were stuck would I be able to stay put until the situation improves or turn back finding alternative route??? I see this is a great site for sources of information and I am finding lots out so any further thought's are most welcomed. I thank you in advance
