  5. Best u go and get one then
  6. Ok Agreed . One might want such info when installing . But using the regs in ones decision process as to whether an existing installation is acceptable or or not is nonsense . One should instead rely on common sense . But the thing with common sense is that it isn t
  7. Does it really matter what the regulations state ? Falling back on someone elses standards is foolish if you are standing in front of a stove on your boat , that may well also be your home & it is clearly an accident waiting to happen . One has to ask oneself " will i " 1 ) rely on rules written in an office somewhere by folk who are seeking to do little else but retain a salary ? OR 2) shall i instead rely on my own brain , my own education , my own common sense & accept that I AM RESPONSIBLE for the safety of my boat , my wellbeing and that of those around me "? For me .. final answer ... is option 2 At that point i might start gathering more detailed info as to achieving a safe and secure installation . I think however i might get around to doing this before autumn arrives and with it the cold . The OP simply needs to ask themselves " this might involve expense - can i afford it " & then ask then ask thenselves " Can i afford not to do it "? The whole thing is a shambles . Every last aspect of that stoves installation is a disgrace . The OP is insane if they use it . Anyway , im done with this thread . WTF do i care ? As long as no one else comes to any harm then the OP can do what they like . I ll bet the indecision is all about money . A few hundred quid to ensure that when u go to bed you wake up in the morning . Folk need to take ownership of thier problems and accept responsibility for putting them right . But then responsibility is a dirty word in a society where someone else is always at fault and never ones self . Rant over - im past caring
  8. The hearth looks to me like a series of bricks with tiles on top . They might or might not be fixed down . The stove appears to have something wedged under a rear leg presumably to level it up . I think this is all perfectly installed - i retract my ealier comments and all these safety considerations are a bit overstated . Nothing bad is going to happen - it never does . I think chewing gum would make an ideal sealant for the flue pipe sections internally follwed by duck tape externally . A belts and braces approach - better to be safe than sorry afterall ! The tiling and the hearth is completely as it should be & it all looks fine . Anything a bit loose or wobbly can be fixed down by using a paste made from weetabix and hot milk and applied into gaps using a spatula . In my experience this will take 24 hrs minumum to set . . From November 6th onwards fireworks can bought at bargain prices . I always keep a large stash of fireworks next to my stove as they make ideal firelighters . I expect a cosy and warm winter will be enjoyed once this simple and cost effective work has been done . The above is the answer the OP wants to hear . Chewing gum and weetabix are cheap and flue pipe , hearths & fireboard are less so . All this fuss & bother about safety is overated . Hope this helps cheers
  9. I guess Plod will be at the door sometime soon to ask me some questions about my crime . Im planning a nap so i hope the meat wagon doesn t have its sirens blaring when it gets here .
  10. enlightening stuff - im glad i asked Thankyou enlightening stuff - im glad i asked . Thankyou
  11. Ive often wondered about this turn of phrase " Gin Palace " Does anyone know how it came about ? cheers
  12. Thanks for this - every day is a skool day afterall . So it seems that as a species it is a " pest " . Having said that it has appeared on a list created by " a member of parliament " & its accuracy is immediately questionable is it not ? Also " taking over britain " is a bit bollocks isnt it ? I just bought a bacon sandwich in town and it wasn t made a deer wearing an apron . The daily mail make it sound like day of the triffids and that the countryside is about to turned into a desolate place where all other wildlife is history . Id suggest that homo sapiens in one hour cause more destruction than all the muntjac in britain . If theyre an introduced species how did they get to the Uk ? Ive seen first hand that they are strong swimmers but i doubt that that they d take on the distances involved . Theyre here because humans put them here & now other humans are moaning about thier presence Yawn . Humans cause the problems , not deer .
  13. I too am surprised by its pest status . Of course this means its a detrimental to human habitation , or more likely someones income . I have no idea of course . If theyre in some way a problem to other animals or a carrier of disease then ok - pest is accurate . I suspect its to do with farmers and incomes .... dunno . In my opinion its usually homo sapien thats the pest & i look forward to day the species is eventually extinct . Hopefully i could even witness the event that brings about its extinction . Then the planet might be able to get back to being a nice place again . Extreme .. probably ? .
  14. The poor thing has been just sitting there shivering since seeming to give up trying to get its legs . I moved the blankets back a bit and it seemed to respond with a jolt . " Righto - enoughs enough little one " i thought and so i tried to pick it up to see if it had any fight left in it . It certainly did and let out a huge yelp and began throwing its legs about . So i grabbed it and picked it up , legs all over the place , up onto the well deck and onto the towpath . I carried it about 30 - 40 metres to tje woods next to my boat and put it down . After a moment or two it was up and away and gone into the woods Happy days - im over the moon ! I have a few photos of the little thing so thats nice and a happy ending afterall . It seems it needed to be " forced " to get on its legs after warming up a bit and having a rest after its extended swim . Time tor a cuppa cheers
  15. Shock is what i put the shivering down to aswell . Its im ny front room near a warm stove and covered in blankets so its not exactly an environment thats familiar . It has a 1" cut on its left ear which has been bleeding . A very neat cut . Its still shivering and its fur is still damp but the stove is on as im trying to keep it warm . This little ones not a pest ... its breaking my heart poor little thing .
  16. About 5 this morning i was woken by an almighty banging on the side of my boat and an awful yelping sound . On investigation something was trapped between the boat and the canal side . I untied the bow rope and it swam out . I couldnt see what it was in the dark and it bolted so to speak . It swam into a lock 50 metres away so i closed the gates to trap it . It took an hour or so to get it out - very string swimmers ! .But it was on its last legs poor thing and i couldn t get it until it was on the brink of giving up . But i managed to haul it out . It laid there all but motionless for about 5 mins and eventually i could hear snorting so it was breathing . I tucked into blakets and put it into the saloon of my boat and in time it began trying to push itself up onto its legs but hadn t the strength but it was fighting . RSPCA are on the way but ive no idea when theyll arrive - soon i hope as its not an easy thing to watch . The little fellow has seemingly given up trying to get on its legs and is now sat very still but shivering a great deal . Its as if its given up . Quite a difficult thing to witness really even for an emotional brick wall like myself - i hope it pulls thru . Fingers crossed please....
  17. Great stuff . 4 weeks id call £1 per day so thats bearable . cheers
  18. As i see it you have asked a question re your stoves safety . The question has been answered . But you don t like the answers because theyre honest & accurate and make for uncomfortable reading . If u ask a question expect an honest appraisal of the situation . Otherwise dont ask . Fortunately you do have smoke alarms and CO alarms . Good .Test thier batts regularly . If you haven t done so already you will need to sweep the flue . When u do this crud will fall from inside the flue so you will need to remove the " baffle plate " or " throat plate " that sits on top of the firebricks that line the interior of the stove . Replace baffle plate after . You will need to check the fire rope seals where appropriate - look on google . I make no judgement on your decision to rent a narrowboat . Up to you . But when you do so you are likely to be on your own . Expect no assistance from the landlord . Stoves are dangerous if not maintained . CO kills . Fire kills . . I couldnt care less if you die by either method , no skin off my nose - my concern is always the other people nearby or other people on your boat who may come to harm because of your decisons and workmanship . Either way , whoever pays is no ones concern but you & your " landlord " . Your agreement , your problem . Most folk on the forum are unlikely to care who pays and only concerned with offering advice about safety . So get the work done and if you have to pay for it yourself so be it . As for your comments about " being a happy bunch " - largely this is true . I am - my boats warm & set up for the winter to come as i serviced my stove in August before cold sets in & i know its not trying to kill me . Get your stove sorted mate , who cares who pays - it aint worth the risks involved cheers
  19. Cheers Can it be used solely for heating a tank of water by isolating the rads & using a timer to run for ... i dunno ... one hour to make enough for a shower & washing up / laundry ? I currently have an eber and use it for one hour to make a tank of hot water and im looking to assess whether an Alde can be economical on a liveaboard boat but for hot water not central heating . A boat im considering as a replacement for my current boat has only an alde & installing an eber is not affordable . If an Alde is just plain uneconomical for hot water only tjen the boats a no goer so im trying to establish how much gas i t might use cheers
  20. OP So in order to help others to advise can you provide : How many batteries How much solar panel Which controller Which inverter How many hours TV / DVD per day What other electrical goods are drawing from your batts - in particular the fridge . Is it on . Is it 12v /240v ? Do u run your engine to charge aswell as the solar ? How many hours if so ?! There will be more questions i expect and those who can help will need this info ( & maybe more ) in order to help . If youve knackered your batts dont worry ..... everybody does . If they are dead its gonna cost to replace and once replaced you ll want them to last a bit longer . If you replace them and carry on as before they will soon pack up aswell . So dont do it . Provide answers to the above and whatever other info is asked for and you 'll get answers to what has happened and how to prevent it happening again . Without the info then folk are just guessing . Every boat is different . Set ups are different . Usage is different . If help is needed on YOUR set up , folk need to know info about YOUR set up and usage . As i say - without it then its all guesswork cheers
  21. I expect it will be worth advising how much solar panel you have fitted & which controller you have . What else is running whilst the TV / DVD are on . Is the fridge on ? I have a Tracer solar control box . When i bought my solar set up 4 years ago i also got the little " display " unit . Its bobbins . I have a look at it during the day but i dont RELY on it as i dont trust it . Instead i use a " smartgauge " . This advises me as to my batteries state of charge - SOC . Im also careful about power usage . At the risk of sounding a little harsh - the tone of your OP seems to be ... " Ive fitted solar so im all fixed up ..." . Its never going to be that straightforward . At this time of year solar gains begin to diminish & soon enough they ll be all but non existant . I can get away with just solar looking after my batts but thats cos im very cautious and dont have lots of gizmos - no telly for instance , no fridge thru winter . If you have been using electrical stuff via your inverter " as you please " thru late summer then that may be ok ( i do the same in summer ) and expect it to continue then its not going to happen . The days are getting shorter & solar will not provide . Its effectiveness will already be much less than in June July & August . Alternative charging methods will be needed. I think that you ve not been charging the batts as much as you think & theyve slowly lost capacity from constant undercharging to the point where the inverter isnt able to function . Others can advise about how you now test your batts to see if theyre goosed but if they are then its back to the drawing board & a rethink of power management & charging routines . Looking after batteries is the key to living aboard with any degree of success and its a far from easy subject & can be an expensive one too . I get around this by being a luddite ! But if you want electrical stuff then tje batts must be maintained and that ll involve effort , learning and probably your wallet .
  22. Thanks for this answer . That seems expensive to me compared to an eberspacher that i have at the moment for hot water . I ask cos theres a boat im thinking of buying that has no eber and only an alde . The running costs seem like theyll be much higher so i ll have to think it thru a bit more maybe Thanks again
  23. Wow 13 grams every 10 weeks !!! . I thought my 3 bottles a year was quite good . Im an amateur !!
  24. 1 person only . Full time liveaboard . Gas used only for oven , grill and hob . 3 x 13 KG per year . Can i ask out of interest : If one used an alde ( older type tall & slim thing ) for just heating a water tank only - say one hour per use , how many days ( approx of course ) might you expect a 13 kg bottle to last ? cheers
  25. Good grief - i find that astonishing ! Of course its never wise to make any assumptions but i wouldve been confident that a hire boat would ve been blacked more regularly than a privately owned boat because the hire fleet company have access to the facilities more easily . Thats just plain lazy not to black it . Dreadful .
