  1. We had channel glaze fitted last year. Double glazing makes a huge difference. Just beware of the little plastic holders for the portholes to drop into, they break easily. Channel glaze are trying to find an alternative Pleased with windows though
  2. As Arthur says the most important thing is to buy the complete range from one make so that it's comparable and sits well together. International is brilliant paint system to use can't fault it. Repainted my boat by hand this summer and the finish is great. Also count how much microns u need of paint on your boat for protection and make sure you get it on!!!!! Epifanes is also good for their deck paint on roofs etc
  3. In my experience it depends on how much the water has got behind the windows currently to how bad the steel is beneath. I took mine out last year, 20 years in the boat. The steel behind was in relatively good nick and it was just in primer!!!!!! Now you mention a full paint treatment primer to topcoat. As you say in order to achieve this you need to be undercover which isn't practical, with the windows out as well also not practical. If u were having new windows fitted by a glazing company (marine one) they would measure up in one day, then the second visit would be to remove and re fit all in one day. No repaint in there. The reason being if the windows are fitting and sealed correctly very little moisture gets to the paint. So, Start early one morning Remove windows Clean all the steel behind with degreaser making sure all old silicone is gone as with the windows Lightly sand under where the window has been and paint in primer Give this time to dry Use double paste window tape around the perimeter of the window Re fit windows Masking tape up Silicone windows Job done A side of you boat a day maybe depending how many windows you have
  4. Hi, Thanks for suggestions. There is no collar at the top, the top collar is part of the superstructure of the boat. It will take the 5" no problem. I guess I was just trying to gauge best practice.
  5. So I've just removed the flue pipe on my boat going to a morse stove. The pipe has been in 20 years but was suffering from rain at the top end so had started to crumble. On removal I noted that it was a 4 &3/4" cast iron continuous pipe with a weld ring in the bottom to make it up to 5" to fit snug into the fire. Now I know u can't get a 5" pipe of a meter and half length anywhere. Do people have any issues with the 4 1/2 " pipe and adapter as sold in most chandlers? Thanks
  6. I'm on a boat just outside of wakefield West Yorkshire. I'm after a local sign writer if possible who is willing to work while the boat is on my mooring not in a dry dock. Someone who is reasonable priced and good quality work. Failing that has anyone found online a stencil type procedure allowing me to paint the name back on myself? I have tried vinyl lettering before but found the sun on one side of the boat to cause too much damage. Many thanks
  7. Can anyone help? At crick a few years back I saw a paint advertised that you could put straight on a surface with no prep work. This was designed for difficult to reach places like the steelwork around the water tank. I can't remeber the name and Google search has produced no results. Does anyone know if such a paint exists? Or what my best options are for working in such a tight space? Obviously I don't want to take the tank out but the space around it needs attention
  8. Hi, We live on our boat and have 4 60 watt panels on our roof these panels are 1.2 metrs long by 30 cm wide. These provide all the power we need to charge our 4 110 amp batteries. Most days the controller unit is limiting the charge to the batteries. I assume it depends on what you use on your boat and for how long. We have a fridge running all day everyday. Chargers for mobile phones and laptops, most days we listen to the radio all day and watch the tv. In the evening. All our lights have now been converted to led which are superb. We would recommend them. We have bought all our solar panels from a company in Leicester called Run by the Sun Ltd. Simon there is very helpful and we have spent around £900 for our panels, controller units fixing kits and cable. After the initial outlay you are getting power for free so what's not to love. The panels still allow us to walk on the roof. If you have more money to spen you can now get flexible panels that glue to you roof and can be walked on. Only time will tell about water Ingres under these but yaghts have been using them for years.
  9. Given the article about insurance and a boats sea worthiness that appeared in this months towpath talk I think what you have done may contradict the terms of your insurance. Would be worth checking it with them
  10. We live aboard our boat and have done for 8 years. Our cat has been with us the whole time. She knows that the boat is her home and loves that sometimes she has a new hunting ground. When we more up in a new place she goes off and has a look about. If it quiet she will go off and hunt for something to bring back to us. I think her record is 4 minutes from us mooring up and her coming back with a mouse. I suppose each cat is different. Ours knows the boat is her home and she is very territorially over it and will defend it against any cat or gog that comes close.
  11. Comastic/coflex is the same thing. They will both go on top regardless of which make you use. Rylard coflex is the best we have found and the easiest to work with. Just remember not touse bitumen on a boat that has coflex on and vice versa
  12. It is the brushes on the 240 alternator which is part of the power pack We have double checked all the connections and fittings and replaced the micro v belt this week also. As it is intermittently working it would suggest its the alternator and people seem to have had similar problems with theirs.
  13. Hi, Can anyone help, we have a beta 1903 with 3.5 kw Electrolux power pack. We are getting intermittent power and believe The bushes are worn on the alternator. We have no serial or reference numbers for the alternator and wonder is anyone can offer advice on replacement parts where from and how much, And are they easy to change yourself? Thanks :-)
