  1. I've a hunch that it's the same lock in both pictures and it's both Grants The current 2 story house is a relitively modern design (in terms of the age of the canal) and it could well have been a single story house originally? I'm not convinced by the Cropredy theory as there's no other buildings around it

  3. And living on a boat is very different to holidaying on a boat.
  4. There's a lot of people that say they are going to live on boats. Not so many broadcast it when they move off within12 months because it was cramped, cold, muddy, hard work and more expensive than they thought it would be
  5. There's a lot of vessels that put to sea that may not be suitable for 'tidal passage'. It's very difficult to stop them and the RNLI often have to bring them back. At least most 'inland' tidal areas are regulated and there is some form of control by harbour authorities. An offshore cruiser is just as susceptible to breakdown as a narrowboat. It's all about proper preparation because the consequence of breakdown can be more severe
  6. There's more chance of hell freezing over than that link ever happening. To much stuff in the way.
  7. Certainly in NB circles a twin is usually more 'desirable' than a triple and usually demands a higher price. Tis often the case with JP's and LW's
  8. The flip side of that is that often in the T&C's of the marina is the requirement that all boats need to be licensed, insured and have a valid BSC
  9. You still need a licence, even if you are in a marina
  10. All you've got to do is make yours more difficult to nick than your neighbours Scroats are lazy bast#rds and will always go for the easier option
  11. Unashamed bounce Any up dates from the locals?

  13. I did a tideway pilotage job for Nigel Carton in September. It was a private boat but the owners were aprehensive about going up through London wanted an experience person to go with them. It was a cracking trip up the river and we all had a great time. It did have it's moments though.... The first was as we left Limehouse and entered the river to find ourselves right in the middle of the Great River Race (http://www.greatriverrace.co.uk/) . 300+ rowing boats enroute for Richmond! We spend the whole trip up being overtaken by rowing boats (yes they were going faster than us), dodging the associated safey boats, being sent through the wrong arches of the bridges etc and of course the usual commercial traffic It did make for a very colourful spectical though. The other one was when the PLA unexpectedly closed the river for safety reasons and told us to turn round and head back down stream (against the tide). I did have a little 'chat' with the PLA launches and London VTS. All was sorted in the end and we made it to Teddington safely. The reason for the tale is that things can get unexpectedly very hectic on that bit of water. I just thought it was another day on the water. The boat owners were very please about employing my services as they said that they wouldn't have know what to do in most of the circumstances presented to us along the way.
  14. ? The same way as anyone else does it. One of the people on the boat has a VHF Certificate and a hand held VHF. Why would it be different for a hire boat?

  17. They'll be interested right up to the point that a hammer is wielded or a grinder comes in to contact with some steel work. Then the complaints will start to come in Been there, done it, got the tee shirt

  19. I bet that got the curtain twitchers going!
  20. If CRT data is to believed, it has only been used by 25 boats since April 2013 anyway I agree though, if these's no 'right' of navigation, it will could soon become blocked off and return back to the state it was in before the IWA cleared it out I defence of the current residents of the arm. It is kept in good order and they do take pride in keeping the surroundings well maintained
  21. I posted it to make people aware of the proposal, allow it to be discussed openly rather than behind closed doors by the select few, and for people to email Nick Wild (if they feel inclined to do so)
