  1. This is only if you are applying for a non Home Mooring licence. (Aka CCing) You are to "Satisfy the Board" as to your intention to Bona-fide navigate the waterways during the period of the licence. Bod
  2. If I understand the paper correctly, and it's report is correct. The boat became unlicensed when C&RT removed a valid licence part way through the licence period. Under the legislation govening C&RT, they have no right to do this, or refuse to grant a licence, if the 3 requirements are met, money, insurance, BSSC. Bod
  3. You have checked the shore power is actually working? Not run out of credit on the post, other post for other boats are working? Some clever systems will automatically switch from shore line to battery power, if the shore line is not reconnected before the batteries go "flat" the lights go out. Bod
  4. Defrost the freezer compartment. Cheap to do, sometimes solves the problem. Thermostat gets to warm, ice stops the cold reaching the thermostat, compressor keeps running. Bod
  5. Unless there is an internal memo, I have never heard of this criteria. There has however been a lot of missunderstanding amongst C&RT employees as to the running of the waterways. Bod
  6. I was on the understanding that C&RT could publish any information that would help the boater satisfy the board, but the distance was not specified in legislation. Bod
  7. I would like to be shown how and when were the "old continous cruisong" guidelines changed to the system of today? The wording of the Act has not been changed since it was created. The distance requirement was never stipulated, however it was the Boaters responsibility to "Satisfy the Board" now the Board (C&RT) require a 20 miles per year minium "Range" to "Satisify the Board", the required distance is now clear. Bod
  8. It's interesting that the C&RT position appears to have changed once Tony Dunkley's ideas have been aired. Whether this change of position is due to humanity or legal reasons, is open to guess work. But in all realty are George and his boat capable of making the 300 mile journey to Lincoln in sensible time? I hope his supporters are able and willing to help him all the way. Bod. Ps. If Tony Dunkley has discovered that C&RT are using powers wrongly then it is to all our advantage that the correct system is used in future.
  9. This is certainly a test for Tony's ideas. Bod
  10. Before going any further with lithium batteries, search this forum for the charging requirments for lithium batteries, this is very different to LA's. But no outboard will charge lithium batteries safety or quickly. Bod
  11. No outboard motor creates a useful amount electricity. Even for running a lap-top, at the same time as the motor is running. To run a small freezer, at least 400 amps of battery capacity, 70 amp alternator to recharge the batteries, engine running for at least 6 hrs a weekday plus 8-10 hrs a day at the weekend. As you may understand, creating enough electricity is the downfall of many new boaters, A set of batteries (Lead Acid batteries) will cost £300-900 and can be wrecked in as little as a few days. Lithium batteries are a whole different ball game, much more expensive, and almost as easy to wreck. Bod.
  12. You will need a Hull Survey at the very least. This should tell you the state of the underwater steel, and if you ask the surveyor, an idea of any repair costs. (Full over plating could be £10-15,000) Bod
  13. To take your last question first, have a read of this website. https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/boating/licence-your-boat As for costs, your question is far to wide, to get a reasonable simple answer, firstly who would be doing the work, yourself or a professional? The difference could be £10,000+ As has been suggested buying a ready to go 2nd hand boat would be a lot quicker, and possibly cheaper. A concern worth considering is how well do you cope with change, on a daily basis? Inc crisis management. Bod
  14. Who are these houses for? Sale to general public, or Grace and favour for CaRT employees/retired. Bod
  15. Be aware the drying time will be much longer, due to the enclosed nature of the tank. Bod
  16. You are being SCAMMED this is a classic technique. They will want the money up front before promising delivery which will never happen. Cut all contact. Do not consider any boat without seeing it in person first. Bod
  17. Bod

    LPG carriers ?

Make a RH and a LH version, to allow easy access from the bank, no matter which way the boat is facing. Nothing worse than having to heave a heavy cylinder over a badly placed lid. Bod
  18. If you change to Lithium batteries, how do you propose to charge them? Most/all normal alternators don't like running at full power constantly, and over heat. Bod
  19. Looking at those photos, these horns are available in 3 different voltages, a real good look at the horns themselves to see if the operating voltage is on the horn it's self. Then trying direct from a charged battery, will tell if they have to be returned. Bod
  20. Please take note, the two main respontants, are both very experienced in the field of narrowboats, in particular Tony Brooks who has spent many many hours replying to questions with acknowledged skill, leading to correct diagnosis and repair, given sensible answers to his questions. Bod
  21. Insulation? Normally on canal boats the insulation is next to the steel body, behind any woodwork that you see inside the boat. Removal/replacement needs everything inside the boat to be removed. Not a quick or cheap job. Unwritten rule of boat building or repairs, it will take at least 3 times longer than expected, and cost 3 times more than budgeted. Please make an effort with the photos, then better advice can be given. Bod
  22. Is that filter the correct way up? Bod
  23. That advert shows all the hallmarks of a boat that has been allowed to get into a rough condition, then tarted up for sale. Study the photo of the stove, it's filthy there is thick muck on the stove fan, the wall behind could be showing damp. Claims of repainting the cabin, shame the paint ran out! The comment that the windows and hatches were now sealed, so how long have they been leaking? In all, that amount of money will buy a better narrowboat. Bod.
  24. This will look a bit off topic, but bear with it. Where does the Govenment get it's money from? How much extra personal taxation would you accept, both personally and as a population? Where should the govenment spend this extra income? This is not a political question, any party in power has the same conundrum. As boaters we will hopefully still receive some crumbs from the political table, but will have to look more to our own resources. Bod
