  1. Brilliant tip, definately getting one. Thanbks mate!
  2. USB dongles are notoriously bad at picking up signals inside a boat unless they're right up against a window. If it works up against the window, obviously it makes it impossible to use the laptop! Get a USB extension cable from somewhere like Maplin for the length you need to stick the dongle in the nearest window from your usual working position They come in various lengths from 1 metre upwards. Make sure it has a male plug & a female socket, the packaging is usually labelled "M/F" to indicate the cable's connectors. Have fun.
  3. Couldn't believe this, so I looked up a dictionary definition which completely confirms your & everyone else's idea of what a filter is. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/filter For Jabsco to use a modified spelling of "filter", i.e. "filta", in the name of their product is totally misleading in my view & probably most reasonably minded peoples view too. A call to Trading Standards is in order I'm thinking! Good Luck.
  4. That's a bit simplistic isn't it Alan? If a rumour can have a substantiated source, then it isn't a rumour is it? " someone told me the other day" is still a source mate. Rumour & idle gossip are one & the same.
  5. Thanks everyone, seems that the mutterings are exactly that. I believe it might be coming from the Dutch Barge groups as I've discussed the situation with a DB mate & he's got the impression from their discussions that it will happen sooner rather than later to bring the canals into line with the EA on charges. Wait & see I guess, but if they do charge by area, don't be surprised if even NBs get increased! BTW, can I use HTML on here? Its only to insert my own smileys like I do on a football forum, but then I'm a bit sad that way!
  6. Hiya, First question on the forums, so I'll try not to bore the pants off everyone, but.... I will soon be taking up residence on the waterways on my 57' Narrowboat, Tilly & we are expecting that because she's not really kitted out for liveaboard, we will possibly be building a new boat within a year or two. It might be a longer NB or it might be a widebeam & so we come to my question - at last! There seem to be mutterings starting to emerge that the new C&RT will be looking to charge their licences & permits by area instead of by length as its done now. So, has anyone got any concrete info on the proposal or when it might come about? Obviously, this will have an impact on which type of boat I might go for as I'm reluctant to go for a wide beam if I might end up paying twice the rate for an equivalent NB in cruising licence & mooring permit! never mind me, its a question we could all be worried about in the not too distant. Cheers!
