Hi
We purchased our boat, Valerie, back in May and my wife lives on it three days a week down in Keynsham near Bristol. We have taken out on the Bristol Avon a few times and are struggling to find reverse and sometimes forward gear, (it seems to partially engage) with the currents on the Avon we need to correct this problem. I have attached a picture of the engine/gearbox we are trusting the photo shows a Sabb 2G (not completely sure), I am not experienced with diesel engines full stop but I know that it is a well thought of classic engine and it sounds fantastic. It has been squeezed into our cruiser stern and needs some TLC. Can you advise us how to go about what we need to do to correct the problem. Do I need to replace the Shims for example or could it be a simpler issue?
Thanks Mark

Dear Mark
You are very welcome to come round and look at our boat in Rufford.
I also have a spare engine at home in Euxton that you welcome to see.
My phone is 07801 385 478.
Your engine looks like a 2g . There is a mark in the casting usually below the injectors or around the alternator which tells you the model.
Every Sabb has a small brass plate telling you the year and engine type near the housing for the starting handle to the rear of the engine. Yours might have been removed for some reason

Dear Mark
I have only just spotted your post. I apologise for not replying but I've been away.
I think it all depends on what sort of gearbox you might have. I would certainly ask locally in Bristol for a marine engineer to have a look and advise you. There seems to be quite a number of small businesses around the floating harbour area.
I live in Lancashire so it's a bit far away for me to help directly.
I hope you get sorted speedily. The Avon down there can be exciting in winter!
Sorry to be of such little use to you.
Peter
