WE had a close shave on the L&L last week. I thought it was Dowley Gap bottom but it could have been Eshton Rd... I didn't see exactly which lock as I was inside cooking. We snagged on some brickwork and listed alarmingly. Well deck scuppers were underwater and the welldeck was filling, and only 1" short of coming in through the cabin door when the boat freed. Maybe C&RT need to investigate all these locks for sticky-out bits..

We had exactly the same problem as you some years ago at the bottom lock at Dowley Gap, we were going down with some friends who were in their boat when we snagged on something, the boat listed, my wife screamed and jumped onto our friends boat, luckily we reacted quickly and sorted the problem out, we never really found what we'd got stuck on and C&RT said there was nothing wrong with the lock. Always wary now !

  2. They've now decided to open a bit more of the canal, if only they'd do the same further west  !

    Notice Alert

    Leeds & Liverpool Canal
Starts At: Lock 13, Newlay Top Lock
Ends At: Lock 1, River Lock

Wednesday 29 August 2018 13:00 until further notice

    Type: Navigation Restriction
    Reason: Water resources

    Update on 04/09/2018:

Following further rainfall and the recovery of water levels, we are reopening the canal from the top of Newlay locks to River Lock tomorrow.

Newlay to Kirstall locks will be open between 10:00 till 12:00 for downstream traffic and between 13:00 and 15:00 for upstream traffic on a daily basis.

We will continue to monitor on a daily basis and will provide further updates accordingly.

    Original message:

The canal remains closed from the top of Newlay locks to River Lock.

We will continue to carefully monitor our water resources and update this notice as the situation changes; if the situation improves we will consider reopening the canal through to Leeds.

  3. This is the latest update from C&RT about our canal, looks like no one is going anywhere from the 17th

    Notice Alert

    Leeds & Liverpool Canal
Starts At: Lock 29, Bingley 5 Rise Top Lock
Ends At: Lock 1, River Lock

Friday 17 August 2018 08:00 until further notice

    Type: Navigation Closure
    Reason: Water resources

    Original message:

Due to the continued drawdown of the river levels, the prolonged low rainfall and with the forecast for further dry weather, the Trust will be implementing temporary closures to navigation between Bingley 5 Rise Top Lock(Lock 29) to River Lock (Lock 1) at the beginning of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, commencing on Friday 17th August.

The main lock flights will be padlocked closed at Bingley Three and Five Rise (Locks 22-29), Field (Locks 16-18), Newlay (Locks 11-13), Forge (Locks 8-10) and the gates will be ashed up to reduce leakage.  Additionally to prevent unauthorised use, measures will be taken to make all the locks inoperable within this section.

It’s not clear how long the closure will last for but it’s likely to be throughout August and potentially beyond if there is no significant, sustained rainfall. While the closure will prevent use of that stretch of canal by boats the towpath will remain open for visitors and the local community alike to enjoy.

The canal will remain open between Holme Bridge, Gargrave and the top of the Bingley 5 Rise Locks, approximately 20 miles

  4. C & RT have now put time restrictions on Bingley 3 and 5 Rise, we won't be able to go anywhere soon unless it rains.

    Original message:

Due to the continued drawdown of the reservoirs, the prolonged low rainfall and with the forecast for further dry weather, starting today, the Trust is restricting opening hours daily at the following locations:

    ·

      • Bingley Five Rise and Bingley Three Rise Locks will be restricted to passage at the following times; passage down in the morning (between 8am and 12pm) and passage up in the afternoon (between 1pm and 5pm).

The lock flights will be padlocked closed at 5pm.  Please ensure that you enter the lock flight with sufficient time to get through, noting the last passage commencement times above.  Moorings are available at the top and bottom of the flights.

We will continue to monitor the water resources and updates will be issued should the situation change.  Please follow the guidance given by representatives of the Trust or on site signage.

  5. Original message:

Due to the continued drawdown of the reservoirs, the prolonged low rainfall and with the forecast for further dry weather, the Trust will be implementing temporary closures to navigation between Wigan Flight (from below lock 85) and Gargrave (from below lock 30) commencing on Monday 30 July.

The lock flights at Wigan (locks 65 to 85), Barrowford Locks (45 to 51), Greenberfield Locks (42 to 44), Bank Newton Locks (36 to 41) and Gargrave (Holme Bridge Lock 30) will be padlocked closed and the gates will be ashed up to reduce leakage.  To prevent unauthorised access though vandalism, measures will be taken to make the locks inoperable.

It’s not clear how long the closure will last for but it’s likely to be throughout August and potentially beyond if there is no significant, sustained rainfall. While the closure will prevent use of that stretch of canal by boats the towpath will remain open for visitors and the local community alike to enjoy.

In the meantime, boaters can help conserve water by:

    • Sharing locks where possible and making the best use of the water available.

    • Ensuring paddles are fully closed once they’ve passed through a lock.

    • Aiming for minimal contact when navigating through locks by ensuring gates are fully open as they pass through. Pushing gates open using a boat can damage the gate lining, increasing its leakage.

An update will follow with FAQ.

Just received this from C & RT well that makes our 10 days off in August a short cruise, just how far is it from the top of Barrowford to the top of Grenberfield

  6. I take it you're with Bear Boating, lovely boats but if you're looking for a quiet holiday then definitely turn left out of the marina and then you'll be going through Shipley, Saltaire, Bingley (3 rise locks and then the 5 rise locks), and then a run with no locks just lots of swing bridges through to Skipton. It's a nice run all the way through to Skipton with plenty of places to visit depending on what you're looking for.

  9. Hi, You'll be better off staying at Bingley , at the top of the 5 rise on Friday night, then going down the 5 rise and onto Saltaire on the Saturday, Moorings at Saltaire aren't great but you should go through Saltaire and turn round just before Shipley, come back to Saltaire to moor for the night.  we usually go back towards Hirstwood lock and moor near the cricket club.

I'm sure you'll have a great time, we've done this trip a few times when we used to moor at Kildwick, Any more questions just ask

I love the 3 day visitor moorings at Barrowford. It is so pretty there and very quiet at night. Barrowford is a lovely place too. I recommend stopping at either East Marten or Salterforth for an overnight and a meal in the local pubs, too. If you go down the locks, leave it til the morning, @8.30, and you may very well be helped by Michael, the lock keeper. He's a good guy and a great chatter. Further along takes you past Reedley Marina and into Burnley. Personally, I would recommend staying at Barrowford and not going any further.

    Maybe see you en route!

You've confused me Lily, How can they not go further than Barrowford but you recommend Salterforth and East Marton, surely they are travelling east ??

    Dave

  11. Barrowford moorings are very nice, just a bit breezy at times, we've spent a few nights there this year, re Skipton, we've spent many nights there and never had any problems,

I'd just avoid the moorings opposite the car park/water point which gets a bit noisy late at night due to the nearby night club. If you're coming east they are just past the canal basin.

Another good place to moor is Kildwick which is about 3 miles past Skipton.

    Dave

  12. We  moor very close to the tunnel and use it a lot,  I'm really looking forward to meeting a canoe coming the other way  through Foulridge !!!!!

I do hope they can go faster than narrowboats !

  13. As said before you can moor at the top of the 5 Rise but we also have problems getting into the side properly.

Theres a couple of moorings near the Fishermans pub at Dowley gap lock just before Bingley no problems there

just a walk into town unless your reunion is at the rugby club then even nearer.

L & L we find is a lovely canal as long as you can put up with all the swing bridges and there's plenty between Bingley and Skipton,

September is a lovely time to cruise there, anything else just ask

  14. If it's any consolation we used to waterski in that area regularly and what happened to you used to happen all the time.

Many times we used to either tow narrowboats off the sand bank on the corner or we'd jump into the river and push them off.

It's always been a shallow bend and we've  spoken to CRT about it before but nothing as ever been done.

Its now over 10 years since we skied there but obviously the problem goes on .

  15. We've been with our boat for the past 3 years but this year we're not taking 'Titus' but still going to spend Saturday there, We were going to go on Sunday but the 'Tour de Yorkshire' bike race will be coming through Skipton so thought we'd give Sunday a miss.

It's always been a great weekend with lots to do and lots to see and looking forward to going this year as a visitor.
