    Drought

I wonder ... if a national 300m contour canal was built, could that be used to move large volumes of water from the wetter regions to the drier ones? Got an idea someone else thought that a couple of hundred years ago, but got shouted down ! Way things are going, maybe it will become popular again. Brian
  3. And then the little men in white coats arrive ............... Brian
  4. I had one of those - but I lost it about 20 years ago !! Brian
  5. I don't see anything rude or outrageous in that. I read it as as a common way of making a valid point through irony. The trouble is that you have to hear the tone of voice and see the expression to best recognise that. Those who have complained have taken it (wrongly) literally. That's a limitation of the written word over the spoken. And probably a good reason to avoid irony on forums - too easily misunderstood. Brian
  6. The Marie Celeste managed with 0!!!! Apologies to the OP - you will undoubtedly get some more serious replies soon. Brian
  7. Sorry, but you would definitely be best advised to have YOUR OWN survey on a 30 year old boat. Yes it is a little costly, but nowhere near as costly as finding yourself with a duffer. Also if you are about to purchase, the survey will often show up more minor defects, which you may be able to use to negotiate a reduced price from the seller. As Bob has pointed out someone else's previous survey will give you no protection whatever. The survey I had on my first choice of purchase COST me £550 - but it SAVED me £32000!! (the hull was knackered and even the seller didn't know that). Brian
  8. I've got a short-cut - how about draining it down!!!! Bet you never thought of that .... Brian
  9. Cor! Bet they'd be good for reluctant bogeys - as for the other 2 implements, the mind boggles! Brian

  12. Yes - said with tongue in cheek, of course. I've never got that far yet, but it does look quite pretty. Brian
  13. Shows how long since any maintenance was done there, then! Brian
  14. Aha! All is now understood - many thanks. and I hope you noticed I've cracked how that multi-post thingy works too. Brian
  15. I've tried hard but cannot yet find anywhere that tells me what greenies are. They seem to be good, but how do you get them or give them? Thanks Brian
  16. I don't think we are in disagreement here. Its just that I understand income and profit as two different things, whereas you show them as the same. Brian
  17. Sorry, that is a crap sentence, What I mean is privatisation means being handed over to private companies whose overriding motive has to be to make a profit. Whereas CaRT is not that, but a non-profit making charity. Bit cumbersome, but more like what I meant! Brian
  18. I think the issue is both. A big part of the reason that the government wants to get rid of quangos like the BW, is that they don't want to (or can't afford) to keep picking up the ever increasing bills or taking the flak when it is failing (there are no votes in that!) "Small government" is something I welcome, mostly because Nanny State interference in every aspect of our lives has grown to become oppression. And the more that politicians keep away from things they neither know or care about, the better. I don't know that has to be privatisation though. The CaRT is to be a charity, not private companies working for a profit. Brian
  19. I too am surprised at 10 "greenies" as I am not sure what they are. From the context, I imagine they are sort of unripe "Brownie Points"? Anyway they seem to be good things to have, so thank you to those who have made a kind donation. Back to your question - NO, I certainly wouldn't think anyone considers you one of "the bad boys" as you put it. As far as I can remember I have always found your posts very helpful, balanced and informative. Never rude or disrespectful. Keep'em coming I say. One aspect of this subject that I think is relvant is the natural differences observed in different areas of the country. I have found that northeners tend to be much more forthright in expressing themselves, and southeners much more reserved. So what is normal to one community can be seen as "rude" or "weak" to the other. Likewise with different upbringing - one family is used to being loud and direct, another quiet and more diplomatic. So one group behaving in its normal way cannot understand why the other takes offence at their conversation. Of course its not as black and white as that, with many shades of grey in between, but you get my drift. I do think that is often at the root of many arguments that descend into abuse, that we see here and, I understand, on other forum type sites. Add to this, the spoken word has the benefit of expression and tone to help convey your intended meaning, which is lacking in the written word, its perhaps not surprising that misunderstandings occur. In view of all this, perhaps we are not too bad here after all! We just suffer from being normal. Brian
  20. I've not been a member on here for long, but it rapidly became obvious that there was a hardcore of "long standing members" who regularly descended into personal abuse and wrecked the topic. Personally I don't think that is probably their intention, but I do think they lack the social skills to appreciate how repulsive others see their rantings. The trouble is though, I find these same people have a great deal of knowledge and experience which I have found extremely interesting and valuable. So I don't know what the best answer is except to encourage them to learn how to respect others who take a different view or have less knowledge than them. They have a lot to offer, but they also have a lot that's not wanted. Sort out which is which and we'll all benefit. Now watch me get slagged off for that !!!!!! Love you lots! Brian
  21. I know you didn't ask about nominating, but that has to come BEFORE voting! And there are others for whom that information is relevant. Furthermore, I think I did answer your question about voting as far as anyone can. As I said, their website says voting will be via their website AND by SMS AND by post. I would take that to mean ANY boater who can quote their valid BW licence number can vote in one of three different ways. Whether it is like your NT voting arrangement, I wouldn't know. Brian
  22. That's even more impressive. My wife would have kittens looking over the side though! Brian
  23. That's where you pay your fare, isn't it? Brian
  24. That is one mega piece of engineering! Mind you, I bet they could have repaired a thousand locks for the same cost. Thanks for the photos, now I can see how it works. Cheers Brian
