  1. As in, if using the Bridgewater as a CRT boat you just boat onto it, through it, and off it again, within a reasonable time period, but without booking online. Just like we always used to? I do somewhat wonder who is actually policing the whole thing, especially for boats which are not stopping. yes - I've never been challenged or had any problem, there used to be the chap -'sonny' who had a reputation for demanding payment/being stroppy, never met him, I always took (and still do) the view that if 'sonny' or someone turned up and wanted payment I would be happy to pay on them sending me an invoice and clearly stating what and why the payment was needed. since the online booking system seems very simple i will probably do it next time, probably just as i'm passing Leigh...
  2. I would agree with Bee - start looking at boats for sale in the north rather than inflated southern prices. I saw a nice 36 foot boat go for less than 18K before christmas - lovely little boat not 'ancient' think its was less than 15 years old. there is project boat near me, 57 foot, recently reconditioned BETA engine, asking a very optimistic 30K, think that will go for nearer £20K personally - but does want a lot doing both these are private sales from 'for sale' in the windows, rather than via brokers. so get out and have a look around on the towpath/marinas if only to get an idea of whats available at what price.

  4. yep agree with blackrose, can't quite see what you are getting at there Leo. if the alternator voltage regulator isn't working properly (in some way) then the alternator is faulty. Remember that for lead acids its the batteries that decide what charge they will take, although they if they are knackered winding up the charge voltage under controlled conditions might get them to start taking some charge (equalisation charging) but thats usually a function of mains battery charger not the alternator.
  5. I'm really not sure why you are so far up your own alimentary canal. For starters you might do well to read the thread as all your posts suggest you haven't read it or didn't understand it. It was established based on scant information, that most likely this should be a turn key to off to stop type arrangement. But without more information or confirmation from the OP or the OPs girlfriend we don't know. We do know that girlfriend injured herself stopping the engine using the engine stop lever and the op was considering some sort of manual stop arrangement in the short term. Of course if you have first-hand knowledge of this type of engine or the boat in question then please do enlighten us.
  6. yes from what I saw its in greenbelt and a conservation area, so the LPA will be playing their 'local plan' /house building target card, possibly quite rightly to protect themselves from a deluge of speculative planning applications. Near me Preston Council royally cocked up their plan to meet new house build targets and becuase they could not show they would meet house supply targets, then speculative development requests went berserk and they could not refuse the applications despite huge local opposition. Eventually under massive pressure from all the councillors who realized their Arses were on the line, they updated there local plan... unfortunately not before some wholly unwelcome developments had got through... I would have thought any serious local developer will know what the current situation is and what chance of getting PP there is, seems to me things might have moved on since the refusals from 15 years ago (or not !), you would need to see what local plans/policies exist and whether they cover this site. the best way would be to find some acceptable greenbelt development such as leisure, stables that sort of thing that would be deemed 'acceptable' or amount to, i think the phrase is, 'special circumstances' that over ride the greenbelt policy - not easy that one.
  7. yes but if your happy living on your boat having an 'industrial' building to store stuff and no doubt it would be perfectly reasonable to have decent welfare facilities in the warehouse/industrial unit.... could be quite attractive, some potential for income if you had a unit or units you could let out, perhaps to a canal related business. Although i suspect the £300K price for less than half an acre would seem to represent a residential development plot price and seems 'optimistic'
  8. yes but the mooring seems to have residential planning permission... 300k seems a snip compared to that one at 1.2M in that there london. i know which i'd sooner have.
  9. hes not doing anything - its his girlfriends boat, who it seems has been stopping the engine by leaning over the running motor and operating the stop lever on the engine. it seems she has hurt herself (we all hope nothing serious) and now thinks this is perhaps not a good idea.... we don't know if that is how she bought the boat or something that developed. I am always surprised at what inexperienced people think is acceptable, I recently went to sort out a charging issue on a widebeam, and the (new) owner thought it normal to lift the deck boards (on a Wide beam !) and disconnect the gear cable from the gearbox so he could run the engine above idle without turning the propeller! becuase the seller of the boat had neglected to mention that the morse control was cream crackered and showed him how to disconnect the gear cable, so he thought that was normal.... I ended up fitting a new morse control for him (it was a vetus actually)
  10. especially as its one clause in a 12 page document apparently.... presume some of the other clauses must cover some of the other issues like working close to the canal itself etc... I think if i was the op i would submit the planning application, as they will need to do that anyway, if the planning people ok it they will either consult CRT and you get your answer or they won't and you can decide to go ahead anyway and hope CRT don't notice, or more responsibly enter a dialogue with CRT from a position of the 'planners are ok with this' are you ? ... I'd expect a 12 page document to cover off how to resolve disputes or at least detail respective responsibilities, including those of BW and its successors.
  11. yep and according to the wiring diagrams posted there are two fuses in the circuit. one thing it does seem an awfully complicated arrangement compared to a simple cable operated pull to stop arrangement or the more usual solenoid that operates the engine stop lever electrically. I suspect the 40A fuse in the starter to solenoid lead is there in case a fault results in the starter trying to energise via that wire.
  12. Agreed and something i said earlier. If Tony and my interpretations of the wiring diagram posted by ditchcrawler are right this would be a switch off to stop arrangement rather than a stop button or stop position on the key. Would really need to see the instrument panel wiring diagram or the op/op girlfriend tell us.
  13. that is likely if the property adjoins the canal, certainly that is my experience. CRT are usually only interested if the work affects or might affect the canal. checking the land registry entry as suggested would seem sensible then you would know whether CRT had any real influence rather than just being 'consulted' CRT might try to send you down the 'works proposal' route (costs about £500) but i don't think that would help you as its usually about works in and around the canal (in my case building decking on my land to moor my boat against) if your conservatory is close to the canal they might want a works proposal to ensure that your not going end up with a digger in the canal or allow debris to fall into the canal, but I think that would be part of their response to the planning people. One name i can suggest is Louise Porter in the business boating surveyors department i think she would be in the right sort of area to advise if CRT would be interested in the appearance change or not. (PM for her details I'm not really happy posting them here, although I'm sure you can work out her email address as firstname.lastname @canalrivertrust.org.uk ) good luck
  14. to be fair I hadn't looked at the diagram Brian posted ! - now that i've got it expanded and look at it again I don't quite agree with you there Tony. it looks like the grey wire is ignition on (energising domestic alternator I assume) and triggering the glow plug relay ? I can also see the starter (red/white) is conencted to the glow plug relay. I assume there is a timer built into it as there doesn't seem to be a separate 'heat' signal. I can't quite see why you would need an engine running signal and the diagram says the 'grey' is 'ignition on but agree its all conjecture without understanding the glow plug relay and stop solenoid functions in more detail. I think as someone else posted is there another loose connector that the soleniod connector needs reattaching to and all will be well... (or at least can start fault finding ) I've just noticed that the diagram says yellow/white - stop sol pull in - would suggest the feed from the starter makes sure the stop solenoid is in the run position ? so my reading - red permanent live grey - ignition on - maybe holding coil ? yellow white- start - pulls stop soleniod to run position presumably blk - earth/neg I'm guessing that the glow plug relay operates for a few seconds when the 'ignition' (grey) is turned on and then lights up the glow plug heater light (yellow/red). if the starter is operated (white red) then maybe the glow plug timer is ended so the glow plugs aren't drawing when the starter is operated (or assumes heat not needed if operator gone straight to start) all this assumes that the numpties haven't been into the wiring and its as the diagram of course... ETA - this could be complete bollox of course but just suggesting...
  15. It seems to me that if it was a energise to run solenoid then how does rhe engine start and run ? So most likely it's a energise to stop which seems to tie in with how the engine is currently being stopped. Has it always been like this ? I find it hard to belive someone would think that fiddling about round a running engine was normal... Is there a stop position on the key or a separate stop button somewhere ( or a hole where one was once) ?

  19. in the face book ad, it actually says 'currently exempt' not no BSS required. Its probably in the spirit of the exemption magnetman posted, if not to the exact letter of it. it looks like the gas system has been converted to the solid fuel stove ! Odd that having a high risk potential ignition and poisonous gas source (SF stove) does not seem to require a BSS..... but electrical system, where a lot of BSS 'fails' are advisory does.
  20. curiously when I go on the book a passage CRT page, it brings up details for the liverpool link (last thing I booked) and says: From 1 April 2023, the following charges will apply: The first 7 nights are charged at £10 per night After 7 nights, any further nights are charged at £25 per night i hope they don't get too greedy and start ramping up the charge stupidly, I know the free thing was bound to end sooner or later, but it was nice while it lasted...
  21. yes but the OP talks about accesssing his office PC and implies hes controlling that remotely which would be different to say VPNing in to an corporate environment and using say teams. i found that using my phone as a local 'hotspot' i could work adequately using VPN/Teams including Video and audio calls. using things like on drive (and google equivalents) there should be little real need for large file downloads to local devices. (yes there will always exceptions) . Phone in the window was needed in my case !. I then replaced that with an £80 who are we Bsomething or another 4G router and a couple of cheap magmount 1/4 wave stub antennae and 100GB/Month sim - and its been fine for work and more importantly the Dark Lord can stream strictly etc. to the 'smart' TV. I'd agree with the earlier suggestion and suggest the Op tether to their phone to see how it goes as a starting point.
  22. I'm constantly amazed at the huge london premium for everything.... i know of a couple of acres of lovely land next to the canal with probably twice the frontage and i think over priced at something in the region of £120K, walking distance to a railway station, 10 mins from the motorway... even that still have best part of mil to put under the bed...
  23. they did keep it open through winter a few years ago possibly around 2019 as an experiment i think. I know we just missed it, but would definitely give it a go if it was open through the winter. I can't really see why its a big problem, guess they would have to man stanley locks but as you say vollies to match booked passages can't be that hard.
  24. citroen Ami - my first car - quirky to say the least !
  25. years ago it was a common sight to newspapers being set alight under the diesel tanks of trucks on a cold winters morning. presumably to to dela with the waxing. As an aside there is also 'winter' and 'summer' calor gas for use in bulk tanks and you can get the regulator freezing up if your unlucky. (DAMHIK).
