  1. Blimey I thought 25 or so foot was going to be pushing it, glad to see not! Carlt, why not, any particular reason?
  2. Ah I see, I was just assuming a centre cockpit for some reason! I was wondering about getting a woodburning stove installed but don't know if that's even possible on that kind of boat. I'm getting a bit ahead of myself here, I haven't even viewed the boat yet... Getting a bit carried away, cycling between mad optimistic excitement and thinking 'what on earth are you doing!' and wanting to throw up!
  3. I was a horse rider for years and competed nationally but fell off a lot, I have been a biker for eight years and came off God knows how many times in my first few years, no matter that I am not a mad rider... I'm going to be in it all the time, I am dead clumsy, and I think I'm more likely to sleep on the verge than risk climbing on when I've been to the pub!
  4. Also, can I just ask, are the terms 'blacking' and 'antifoul' used interchangably, so the rules would be the same for both? I am most likely going to get a GRP boat and I understand they are talked of in terms of antifoul rather than blacking.
  5. Was yours on an outboard? The one I am going to see is an inboard, I believe, which should hopefully be better for the batteries although it's going to cost me space in the aft cabin which is where I would hopefully sleep (can't say for sure until I have seen it.) How did you heat the Dawncraft? Did you find it sufficient in the winter, or was it perishing?
  6. Interesting, thank you both! Particularly interesting as I am going to look at a Dawncraft 27ft on Saturday! It's just going to be me (and the cats!) so heartening to hear you were on one and did ok.
  7. How many of you who liveaboard have a cat/ cats? I am plannning my move to living aboard, and I have four of them... How did your cats adjust? Do you have any thoughts or comments on it? Also does anyone CC with cats, or do you think it's only really viable on a permanant mooring? Thanks!
  8. can't believe I found this thread, I currently live in a flat and one of my cats loves bats... I'd never heard of any other cat going after them until now! He normally brings in at least one a week, still alive and with no intention of killing it until he has rung the last ounce of fun he can get out of the poor little sod... The first time I attempted a rescue the bat bloody bit me, which put me off a bit! My cat doesn't have a collar or bell etc, just a very swift right hook by the sound of it!
  9. Hi everyone! I am new and looking to liveaboard for the first time. (well, first time since I was a very small child when I lived on a narrowboat until I was about four, but I barely remember that!) I have been doing lots of reading, budgeting, browsing etc and still have a ways to go! I understand that it's generally the best idea to get the biggest boat that you can for the money (within reason, obviously) but as I don't have much money and ergo am looking towards the smaller end of the size spectrum and probably a GRP boat, I am wondering what is the smallest boat that you have sucessfully lived aboard on for any length of time? (like a year or more.) And how did it work out for you/ is it working out for you. Any stories welcome! Many thanks.
  10. Starting to wish I never started to read this thread, lol! So how often can I expect to fall in, as a person who has never driven a boat before..?
  11. Thanks for that, it wouldn't have occured to me to budget for more than one coats. Also someone has sent me a pm/ started a private conversation with me but I can't open it or read/ reply as I don't have that permission (presume as I am new) so that person don't think I'm being ignorant!
  12. Lovely, thank you so much! I did think it was probably by linear foot, but as I am looking to buy for the first time at the moment and am working out my budget and ongoing costs etc, I didn't want to assume anything!
  13. Hi all, I just joined. I have a silly question but I would rather ask it on the forum than publically lol. When boatyards etc. give you a price per foot for blacking or antifouling a boat, do they mean per foot in length and assume it's a standard narrowbeam, or does it mean per square foot? Also does the price usually include the cranage in and out? Many thanks!
