  1. Bet you anything he needs a small amount of money to get access to his funds that are locked up in 'investments'. All paid back with interest of course

  3. Thank you everyone. I was obsessively checking the electrolyte level and charging voltage once I realised there were 'issues'. There were no uncovered plates even after I caught a 110 bubbling and it always got over 13.5 volts. It did puzzle me that the amp meter on the suspect charger stayed right up high and never came back down as you would expect for the 'absorption' stage. To be honest though it doesn't say anywhere how many steps it could do. The manual's worse than useless. I'm aghast that I might have to check the polarity of the charger- never even occurred to me it could be wrong. Would my multimeter have displayed a negative voltage when I was reading the charge voltage though? Didn't notice that. I'm reading all of those good links guys.
  4. I thought 11.5V was discharged rather than damaged. Is that wrong? My supposed dead 110's won't move from 10.5v on rest so I'm thinking that's unambiguous. It is true though that all of the batteries could very well have been on the way out before I started but the domestic's seemed to be working ok before I started (without any measurements unfortunately). I'm really learning my lesson about cheap chargers aren't I...
  5. I'm a very slow typer. Two more replies came in whilst I was writing Can I just confirm Arthur Brown that you are recommending getting a charger much bigger than 10% of the battery bank capacity? On the example you gave am I right in saying it was a 45A charger on a 90Ah battery? I thought 20% was the absolute maximum for longevity?
  6. Thanks for the reply Keeping up- after 8 hours goggling I couldn't find that nugget of information. Also thanks Steelaway, I did know that- just forgot For the record I thought I'd found the perfect one when I bought this Absaar 22amp from halfords a few days ago (annoyingly it's not on their website): My link It's rated up to 225Ah so I thought it would be ok. However, after 5ish hours of charging a single, disconnected 95Ah battery at the 11amp setting it's killed it stone dead. It read 11.5v before I started and now only 4.5v ish after resting. This is after it probably killed my two old 110Ah ones. I didn't confirm that they were any good before I started so I assumed it was them rather than the charger and so had a go on the 95Ah that a very kind boater gave me. Not a good decision in hindsight. I'm now wondering if I can get any money out of Halfords for all the damage. :-( SO IF ANYONE FINDS THIS POST IN FUTURE TAKE THIS AS AN EXTREME RECOMMENDATION AGAINST THIS CHARGER. Anyway, does anyone know of a good yet cheap one that will do the job when I get myself some new batteries? Maybe it would be best to only get one replacement since we're selling the boat soon and I reckon we could manage. This would widen the options.
  7. Apologies if this has been answered before, I did do a quick search but couldn't find anything. After various battery charging woes that I won't go into, I'm looking for a cheap automotive style 12v battery charger. I'll use it to charge our small domestic bank of 2 110Ah marine batteries paralleled together. A lot of the ones I'm looking at state a maximum battery capacity that they can be connected to. It's usually less than 100Ah which, of course is much smaller than our battery bank. Here's an example of a Halfords charger saying 70Ah max: My link I really can't understand where they get this maximum battery capacity from. All the theory I've ever read says that a small charger will just take longer to charge a bigger battery and a lower charge rate is actually good for them. The chargers I'm looking at are all somewhere between 6 and 12 amps in power and either 2 stage or 3 stage. I know a proper marine charger/powerpack would do the job best but as usual cost is an issue. So basically what I'm asking is: Is this spec just a recommendation or a real limitation? Ben
  8. Thanks guys, I finally got through to the seller on the phone last night and got a contact number for the new owner. For a few days it looked like he'd disapeared. Sounds like it's the right engine and the owner wants to get rid too. I'm about to phone so fingers crossed we might be back on the cut soon. I'd appreciate it if you'd all still keep an eye out for any more Ducatis sitting around though. I figure if I get a big enough heap of scrap engines I'll be able to keep going indefinately :-)
  9. I'm hoping someone can put me in touch with the new owners of this boat. It was very likely sold on apollo duck in may. http://sailingdinghies.apolloduck.co.uk/display.phtml?aid=200623 It's a very tired 30' Springer named 'Duty Free' and is likely going through a major refit on the river Cam, Cambridge area. It was sold fitted with a non working Ducati single cylinder engine which I'm sure will be scrapped at the first opportunity and this is why we're interested. I have a 70s Springer with a similar Ducati and the gearbox is practically dead. After a lot of searching I'm sure this is the only way we're going to get parts. Unfortunately a new engine is not an option because of cost as is adapting a more common box to the engine. I'm willing to pay of course and I do like the idea of keeping these old beasts running. Failing that does anyone know of a similar springer being re engined on the network anywhere? I do realise I'm about 15 years too late
  10. Thanks for the welcome. I've finally got past the 5 posts necessary to pm.

I don't suppose you have a single cylinder Ducati diesel by any chance? We're a bit stuffed...

  11. The boatyard engineer and I took a tour around Daventry and Braunston this morning and talked to a lot of people. No joy so far and it's become clear that with my funny engine bearers and prop shaft (machined down to 1" specially!!?!) an engine swap is out of our budget. It sounds like LOADS of small Springers were fitted with these in the 70's before they changed to Listers and 15 years ago LOADS of people were swapping them out for something more modern or better supported. So where did they all go? All scrapped? Thanks for the contact Tony, I'm still trying to get through on the phone. Keep the ideas coming people, it's very much appreciated!
  12. Thanks guys, The reply from Diesel Power Uk says they last had parts in 1994 and VM Motorri are not replying... Looks like it has to be a donor engine. I have figured out my engine is an IS-16 not IS-20 as I thought and that the box was maybe made by Iori though. Does anybody know of a good old fashioned boatyard that has loads of old engine bits floating around that we could rumage through?
  13. Hello and welcome to our forum . . .

  14. My fiance and I are liveaboards on a 1970s springer fitted with with a ducati single cylinder. It's probably an IS20 but could be an IS18 or IS19. The gearbox has multiple problems and needs to be replaced, or at the very least needs major work with multiple parts needed. To fit a more common gearbox the engineer tells me I need a new drive plate and adapter plate. I'm finding it hard to find even a reference to my engine online, let alone any parts, new or otherwise. Unfortunately my engine is not the same as the more common twin cyclinder (DM models) fitted with hurth boxes. I'm starting to wonder if I need to go for an entire engine swap, which we can't really afford and I'm loathe to scrap a perfectly good (if underpowered and out of production) engine. Has anyone got any ideas? So far I have tried- the yahoo ducati diesel group (not a lot of activity) the google ducati diesel group (seemingly defunct) the ducati thread on the oldmarineengine.com forum emailing diesel power ltd, the uk dealer for vm motori engines Is there one thats been kicking around your boatyard for the last 20 years? Thanks guys, Ben
