  1. Thanks for the input guy although it leaves me a little confused! Ha! I did email Tayna and they did confirm it is a deep cycle battery znd ishop gives a more detailed overview of them and how it is calcium based like most wet lead acid batteries but theyve done something to make the calcium more effective *marketing speel*?! Whats the consensus on Trojan batteries? ive heard the name mentioned a lot? http://www.tayna.co.uk/T-1275-Trojan-Battery-Deep-Cycle-T1275-P8673.html Is it worth spending that much on one battery though? The link above is for a 150amp one though so its like having 4 x110amp batts.... I want as big a capacity as i can as i have a large solar array and want to actually make use of it by storing it (690w of solar)
  2. Does anyone know if these will be any good for deep cycling - leisure use? http://www.tayna.co.uk/EXV115-Enduroline-Calcium-Leisure-Battery-P8283.html I know on their site it is called a leisure battery but I was always under the impression that calcium batteries werent supposed to be used for deep cycle use? Im not thinking of buying yet but it would be good to know as they are something i am considering, as they are allegedly better than wet /sealed lead acid batts?
  3. I always take the gas bottle out the locker from standing on the deck?? We have 13kg bottles. Empty or full they come out the same way.
  4. What an absolutely spiteful comment. Why would you remove it?? So you can make your life more DIFFICULT by having a fixed board instead and then tying to balance on the gas locker when getting the bottles out?
  5. Not sure why its seen as "ugly"???? Its in an open position like that on the hydraulics??? Not as ugly as some of those who have the fold up tables with all the horrendous roses and castles on showing through the glass screen, surely? Looks smart, modern and clean to me
  6. Have to disagree - i think its a fab idea and definitely something i would consider (no cratch here yet but want one and was thinking something with a removable or "moveable" panel like this). The problem is so many people in the boating world dont want to see things change or embrace new ideas - you see it from a lot of boat builders even, who do things "a certain way" and "thats just the way we do it" Time to embrace change! Definitely something i would book for! Well done Kinver, will bear you in mind and hopefully you'll pull the design off
  7. Great advice Nick, many thanks for that. We are moored more often than not but still mostly rely on solar/engine power. Plus having the new washing machine (its the old model, not the newest one, but new for us!) means we cant do any washing unless on a shoreline! Really annoying as it means that until we get back to an available shoreline, we have the washing building up. Think a generator is the way to go then at least temporarily. Yes, you are right, we have had so much work done. We have spent 2 years fitting out and still at it, although just minor bits and bobs now. We do love the boat and I personally would prefer just to get it stretched, say 8-10ft or so, but of course, its the funding issue and if its more financially viable to just sell up and start again maybe if i win 10k on a scratch card! So yes, ideally a stretch would be the way forward but not sure for now....will wait and see!
  8. Agreed. And a "penalty" is often included when paying off early with most types of mortgages or loans. It would be totally illegal to charge the whole term of interest if paying off, say 7 years early. Tjderby85 - as suggested, definitely give RSL a ring, they were so helpful with us when we knew nothing about boats 3 years ago and its all pretty quick and straightforward too. Im originally from Ilkeston and born in 85, wonder if I know you?!
  9. Thanks everyone. Quick question - would one of these run a washing machine? 1. I have a small zanussi compact washing machine but this doesnt work through my inverter as i only have a quasi sine wave inverter. Grrrrr. Do the travel packs provide pure sine wave if I were to have this bolted onto my existing engine? 2. Are they expensive to have fitted 3. Travel pack or generator?? Which would be the best option?
  10. Hi, thanks for your response everyone, gives me an idea of what they are! What i dont understand is that is it a replacement for an inverter then? I can have large appliances going with my engine on anyway through my inverter? Hi Nick, yes we are considering options at the moment why do you ask? Just feel in particular we need a larger living room space, everything else is perfect but just feel a bit cramped in living room Hi dean, hope you and M are doing well - hows the widebeam coming along?!
  11. I hear "travel pack" mentioned a lot when looking at boats for sale etc . But what exactly is it? Is it the same as a generator?
  12. Cheers guys. Thought it was too good to be true, Julian I'd have to go for the 800mm size board which is £39.99 and I'll need 3. Grrrrrrrrr!!
  13. It might be me being stupid, but what "fireboard" do I actually need behind my stove?? I've seen fireboard online for £60 for a 800x 600 sheet but I've also seen fire resistant plasterboard - a brand known as "Kingspan Thermal Board" which is only £15 for a 1200x 2400mm sheet? Could that be used behind a stove??
  14. Cheers for the tip - is that necessary though if the wall is already thickly spray foamed and lined? Good Idea though will look into it
  15. Haha! Maybe Ill do some sort of stitch design was only saying button design as an idea. Could look a bit 80s!!
  16. Cheers jules! Always trust your opinions and advice. Will let you know how I get on.... And take before and after shots etc... Hmmm I wonder what it'll look like?!
  17. P.s always loved that bed n storage baskets of yours too. Looks really good!
  18. Cheers Julian. I'm thinking of doing the whole cabin side though. What do you think ( lower cabin side not a bulkhead like your appears to be) Basically under the gunnels on one along the whole length of the bedroom...
  19. Hi guys A long time since I've been on the forum but am wanting some advice.... We have a cross fit bed and the bed frame is about 2 or 3 inches off the cabin side. I'm a bit concerned as I feel that the gap between the bed frame and wall behind could encourage condensation or mould .... There's not problems yet, but I like to be prepared Anyway, as the bedroom isn't yet finished (boats cost thousands to fit out properly and all that !!?) what I was thinking of doing, is on the whole wall behind the bed....lining it with inch thick sponge (upholstery sponge not cake or the kind you eat!) and then covering that in a faux leather with maybe a stitched button design. So basically , it'll be like a giant headboard which will cover one side of the room.... Lower walls only, not above the gunnel height. The wall is currently lined in ply and then an oak effect wood veneer on top of that - crappily applied and not finished off entirely which is another reason I thought that might look good? Just wondering if I could be confident then that condensation there wouldn't be an issue after lining it with a thermal like sponge? Plus by the time I've added the sponge, it may well be butting up to the bed frame if the sponge is thick enough, so no 'air gap' between bed frame and wall. What do you think??? No comments about it being like a padded cell please
  20. Would highly, highly recommend ed shires of FC marine. He did some brilliant work for us and used quality cabling, unlike another electrician we had in at one point. He's always on time, professional and would have him to do anything electric/heating wise if I need to in future again. Not affiliated , just had some good work done by him. http://www.fc-marine.co.uk/Welcome.html hope canal world or Ed himself won't mind me giving his web address out - his contact details are there Say hi to him from me if you get him to do some work for you! Cheers Lewis
  21. Aww great! And you're really lucky you're on the Bridgewater, its one of my favourites!
  22. Hi dean. Great to hear from you, yes we're not too bad - sure you've heard news from M. The mooring is lovely - the views are amazing, are you still travelling around?
  23. I lived without them all for over a year on board after previously having them in my apartment and other homes I'd owned. Therefore, after a year without, I felt I could make an informed decision that life was easier with those appliances and chose to have them again. Just because I live aboard a boat doesn't mean I have to life some sort of pilgrim lifestyle. I'm not on a boat to prove a point And at the end of the day, there's enough cr@p in life to deal with, so why not make life easier where you can - I hate washing up and I can't be doing with stressing about getting clothes dry etc - so I solved the problem!
  24. Thanks for the advice guys. Ill make sure I get one of those fly adapter leads. That's interesting, although we're not a marina as such, its farm end moorings and electricity is being provided out of the generosity of the land owner. We're lucky as we have toilet disposal on site, water and the option of elec. the farm end moorings next to us have nothing but the space you moor your boat with the nearest water point about a mile away! I'm sure his response, if I questioned him about the elec conforming would be something along the lines of.....either use it or don't if you don't feel comfortable with it! To which I agree! The units all have an RCDor some sort of safety trip switch on them too. I suppose I will just have to be very careful with it all. It won't be something that's left plugged in anyway, as we mostly live off solar, so I'll see how we get on
  25. Hi sorry I did forget to mention that yes the boxes are protected in plastic casings - so the plug wud be protected from the elements. Thanks for the tip about which end to plug in first? So basically I can just chop the end off for ease and it will still give me all my electrics? Also I am right in thinking once plugged into shoreline, you're not running thru the 12v and so items that are powered higher than my 1600w inverter will work via shoreline? Eg iron, motorised stand mixer which never runs on the right speeds via the inverter? Cheers
