  1. Emerging from top of a lock gates with lots of debris collected there you need to get speed up in the lock and  coast through in neutral until clear of it using the rudder for some way often, and weed and debris elswhere too especially on rivers with a current running, unless you want a busted prop, dislodged rudder or lots of weed box visits to clear the prop unless you like all that then power through it all.  I'll stick with my large plate rudder.

And a report from the garage I use said that the wrong oil makes the blocking worse and it has cost customers new engines.

It seems to be more of a problem in America probably cos they travel longer distances. Yes the 1 litre 3 cyl engine is the biggest problem. An engine of about 80hp boosted to about 120hp with a turbo. Fitted in quite big cars. Focus, Ecosport ect. Those little engines must be quite heavily stressed.

  3. The latest Ford Ecoboost engines now in various Fraud models have wet timing and oil pump drive belts ''RUNNING IN OIL!!!!. and some diesels too. The problem is wear fibre gunge from belts blocking the oil pump filter. Chains would be much much better running in oil but more expensive of course. I've recommended to a couple of folk with these engines to change there oil and filters every 3,000 mile

dunno it’s always too bright I have to have me eyes shut

Reminds me of an old friend of mine that uses to stand in front of a mirror with his eyes closed trying to see what he looked like when asleep.

I’m, Red green brown colour blind,

the green of a navigation light to me appears towards white as does the green of a traffic light,

so I easily see the difference between the red and green,

Im more likely to get the green and white lights mixed,

now if you took a single poppy and placed it on a nicely kept lawn I’d not be able to find it,

Red apples in trees is another loss,

but green apples in trees I see because I see the different greens

and looking up at the stars is a loss on me, colour wise,

it’s all very odd but really very interesting,

What does white appear as then?

Less then 2 months until our trip! Yippee! I have a question about laundry; Can I pull into any marina and tie up at a guest mooring to use the laundry facilities? We will be out for a fortnight and like to pack as light as possible.

Some marina's would allow that, but if your travelling light why not d/i/y. I do all my small stuff in the sink with a homemade Rubbing board, Pre rinse in the river to get most of the soap out then a final rinse in the sink. If your hiring a trad style boat all the better, rig up a little washing line with a bit of string above the engine,'' clothe pegs are cheap and useful for other things too, like when you visit a sanitory station to empty the toilet or pump out, just pop one on your nose and hold your breath''  things will dry quickly there above the engine. If a cruiser stern boat rig up a couple of washing line front and back. Scrubbing boards can be bought cheap online or in oil shops here. The macho gueezers that won't relinquish the helm for er-indoors to have a go are easily identified, they almost always stand bolt upright, chin in the air like an admiral of the fleet, wear Breton or Captains hats and frequently bellow out orders and instructions to er- indoors at the front, sometimes by megaphone. The only time that Macho captain is likely to let er-indoors have a go at the helm is when he in quiet panic has made a huge boob himself, and big danger is iminent like he's headed the boat straight at a weir by mistake, bellows for her to come and have a go at the tiller, when disaster strikes, grabs the tiller back from her and blames her for the terrible results, Hope you have a tremendous and great holiday.

  7. Bad health especially breathing problems are with a great many folk caused by obesity, gorging on mountains of crap grub, one only has to note what some folk in front of you at the supermarket checkout sre buying ie, huge bottles of fizzy pop, burgers, sausage rolls, enormous bags of frozen chips, huge hunks of meat, massive bumper bags of crisps ect, big stacks of toilet rolls. Probably driven only half a mile to get there with the seat shoved right back and the steering wheel jambed in their fat tummy instead of walking and very likely go back home to gorge on big greasy fry ups and doughnuts whilst goggling at the telly or playing on laptops and phones. No excersize !!!. just heavy puffing and blowing when lurching about. As Harold Mc Millan once said,''We've never had it so good''. 🍿🥨🍨🥔🥩🥵

So as I’ve started to get my boat closer to how I want it, the increased wet weather has highlighted a whole new headache. I’m getting leaks from a lot of the windows, a porthole, a Houdini hatch, mushroom vents and also the flue for the log burner. I knew I had a project taking on the boat and is something I would of eventually and maybe got new thermal break windows etc, but I’m really not in the best position to be doing that right now.

I will be sorting it when it’s dry enough, and I’m sure lots of other boaters have had issues like this before. I’ve tried to patch up what I can for now.

But any advice on how to fix this when it’s less wet would be appreciated. I understand I would have to remove and reseat using sikaflex for the windows. I’m not sure how to safely remove and then prep the window and recondition the frame itself and the space it’s going back into. Houdini hatch and flue are something I’m particularly clueless about. TIA

For a start, buckets,  saucepans or washing up bowls over the mushroom vents until weather improve.

My Dad had one of them. Sidevalve but I don't recall the engine having thermosyphon cooling. But equally I don't remember it having a heater ether! But my main memory of it was the three speed gearbox with reverse where first gear was on my 4 door(!) Austin A35. That sure led to the occasional exciting moment at busy junctions when I borrowed his car!

Ford modified the old e93a s/v 1172 engine for the 100e range by modifying the block for a water pump in the normal position, the reason was for the much lower, modern, body profile of the 100e. The valves were altered to adjustabe with lock nuts where as the old e93a had fixed clearance. but basically the same engine.   Heaters were again optional.  Three speed box on all the s/v engined cars.

Don't you mean E93a Ford Pop? My Dad's nd E93a had one fitted exactly as you describe.

That was the general term for them because they all the sit up and beg Fords shared the same or similar chassis and mechanics. But all the sit up and beg range of Fords had their own Ford identifying number too. 103E= Pops from 1953 to 1959. E83W 10cwt vans. 7W 8hp anglia. And later 100E which still used the 1172 s/v engine although modified. Lots more but I can't remember them all at the mo.

Our CO detector always reads zero. Well it should do. A couple of years ago it started showing a reading whenever the stove door was opened to refuel etc - and it is not close to the stove.

To cut a long story short I removed the flue pipe because it was choked up with a very hard concrete-like deposit and at one point near the stove, the clear diameter was only about an inch. Cleared it all out with a long chisel etc and since then it has been fine with always 0 on the CO detector.

So probably your flue is severely restricted. Personally I disagree about removing the baffle plate, the plate is there for a reason and helps improve the efficiency of the stove, but you do need to clean out the space above the baffle plate from time to time.

If it is anything like our flue was, sweeping it is ineffective because the deposits are rock hard.

Usually caused by feeding wet or damp smokeless fuel in the stove.
