It is the river Irk but has never, as far as I know, been used for navigation. (wait for somebody to say "oh yes it has")
It looks like barges were loaded there see link.

Don't talk him out of it. I was going to give him a tenner for the old Dorman, just to help out you understand...

If I am walking on the canal bank or driving my own boat I never give a boat with a modern engine a second glance .But if its got an old Gardner Lister Ruston Hornsby or Russel Newbury or a Dorman its the difference good old England or rubbish.ATB Geoff

I have just measured my dipstick, From the shoulder it is six inches long with a full mark at 1 inch and a low mark at 1/2 inch any rod will do solder or weld a washer to form a shoulder and file a 1 inch flat leaving it rough to hold the oil.
many thanks should be able to make Geoff

My partner has always had an interest (never fulfilled!) in boating and together with my parents we've decided to go on a short boating holiday.
We'd like to go away for 3 to 4 nights and we're based in Essex. We're looking for a pretty route with a smattering of places of interest to float by! ; )
We were initially thinking maybe going to Oxford or Bath but having started researching a bit more I'm getting a little confused about what routes are possible. I've read somewhere about needing a radio licence to use the Thames which none of us have!
Could anyone help advise with regards a suitable route. No problems driving an hour or two to get to the start of a route.
Many thanks a very excited novice!
The hire boat company will give you suggested routes google the companies near you and look at there websites Hope you enjoy your trip Joan

Probably not much use, but the part number is 291-2367/1. My FR has a dry sump and the dipstick is in a non-original remote oil tank, so I can't really help with dimensions, sorry.
MP.
Thanks for your help Geoff

Hi Jim.Try gravity feeding the engine from a small seperate tank just as a temporary measure. And see if the problem is cured if it is it is down to somewhere in the pipework pump or tank.I have a Lister FR 2 that I am thinking of fitting in my narrowboat. My oil dipstick is missing and could do with a sketch to enable me to make one.I wouldnt mind seeing your boat if its possible please give me a ring 07976233656.Thanks Geoff Peel.

If it is anything like ours its a Hurth and the dip stick is in the filler plug and the oil is that red automatic transmission fluid
