  1. I was told that the trouble with epoxy paint and its long life span you tend not to drag the boat out of water and forget about other maintenance issues annodes, prop, rudder etc
  2. How good is the mikuni mx60 and is it efficient to run and maintain
  3. Is a travelpower 3.5kva a reliable item and I presume it needs the engine running to make it work, and if so would it be a good idea to get a generator to keep the hours down on the engine. I need to learn fast
  4. They sound a little more hardy than a modern engine and pushing a 70ft narrowboat should be easy
  5. I looked at a 70ft boat without any side hatches, just wondered if you can get a kit to replace a window for a side hatch and if so where would you get one from and at what cost. Cheers
  6. How many hours will a Kelvin K2 run comfortable and what are they like in hot weather, can it be fitted with a starter and at what cost. I will pop down to saul as I only live in Gloucester so thats handy. Just wondered as well why the lights on the narrowboat I am going to be looking at are 24v and not 12v
  7. I am new to boating and looking at boats I wondered what the spares situation is like for a 1933 Kelvin K2, are they reliable, how many hours between servicing are they easy to maintain.
  8. I have managed to persuade the wife to look at a boat fitted with a 1933 kelvin k2. What are the spares like for these engines and are they reliable and how many hours between services ?
  9. When we canoe, d down the river wye we used a self inflating airbed which we found a lot better than a normal airbed. A bit expensive and probably a little bulkier than a normal airbed but loads better. They are quite flat to the floor.
  10. I would be a bit reluctent to have an ex hire boat they have been looked after but they have also had there fair share of use and abuse. Some people have probably got them and had no trouble. I would like to get one thats fitted out already so I can concentrate on enjoying boating and not have to start ripping it apart, i,m not lazy I don,t mind some work but nothing major. I have had my fair share of doing the houses up that we have lived in so I think its time to chill a little.
  11. Many thanks with the help of the costings, the sale of the house is now in the hand of the solicitor and we are looking at a completion date of the beginning of march if all goes well. I have been looking at a few seventy foot boats as I think this size would suit us better giving us maximum space. If anyone knows of any seventy foot boats that I may have missed, semi trad or trad send me a private message with any details that you may have. Please no engine rooms the wife said so. lol Cheers
  12. How old is your boat ? and what sort of price is it worth today compared with when you brought it.
  13. I also appreciate that an house goes up in price and a boat goes down, but after a 25 yr stint paying your mortgage and chipping away at the old block I wonder how much you have actually paid for that house. You probably don,t start paying for the house for the first few years depends on the mortgage you have taken out.
  14. So what are the guidlines ? Travelling from sharpness around to the K & A and commuting to work wouldn,t be staying in one place and besides Gloucester to Sharpness is 15 miles long and if you didn,t have a river licence how could you travel up the severn. And if you had a widebeam you would be limited from sharpness to stourport unless you went across the severn to Bristol.
  15. When the house is sold there,s enough to buy a decent boat which we hope to be on for at least ten years and with a little bit of saving and the rest of the money off the house we will get a two bed place to rent out. Then the rent will help pay for the running of the boat and we are both working. Think of it as spending the kids inheritance. lol I know there,s things to go wrong on the boat but also a house as the same problems your boiler packs up there,s a few bob unless you have insurance to cover it, separate from the buildings and contents. And i,m sure if things are maintained correctly oil changes, grease etc it all helps. To the guys in the marina tell dave " dun truckink " hello from the one legged brummie I keep meaning to pop in and see him but i,m sure I will have time once i,m on the boat. And no, just because I only have one leg and hopefully soon to be a boat owner I don,t want a bloody parrot.
  16. Cheers I can cope with the running costs of a two bed flat. Sorted Where about are you guys on sharpness ? Its a cracking canal nice and wide
  17. Well even as a new boater I wouldn,t part with £60 - £70k without a full survey that,s madness. It might look good where you can see it but what about the parts that are out of view, in the water ! And I do think sometimes things sell to reflect the times I had to drop my house price to achieve a sale. There,s even a figure i wouldn,t have gone below, but if I would of asked the price that it would of fetched in the peak times I think it would still be on the market today. When I first moved here 11yrs ago if houses came on the market in this cul de sac which was not very often they were snapped up, I can probably count on both hands all the sales of the 50 houses in the past 11 yrs. But times have changed the guy below me as just taken his house of the market after 18 months unsold and I must say it was well priced. Cheltenham I feel as always been overpriced when we moved to Gloucester there was always a big difference that,s why we chose to live in Quedgeley but even that is starting to get over developed, hence why we have decided to sell up and move onto a boat for a bit of peace and tranquility.
  18. Well thanks to everyone who as helped give me some sort of idea about costings, as the house is now under offer I have been given a time scale of about eight weeks so I best start planning fast. I have seen a nice seventy foot 2005 boat but I thought £70k was a bit steep it as been for sale for over 12 months and I suppose the call for seventy footers is not great. But for what I want a seventy footer will be ideal.
  19. Cheers The running costs seem a little higher than what I thought, bearing in mind BWL £931 or £831 paid up front Insurance £261 and being classed as a continous cruiser no mooring fees. Compared with running the house £1800 rates pa £53 per month gas £53 per month electric A bill just in for £231 water rates Mortgage £180 per month I thought I was going to save a lot more living on a boat.
  20. We are in the process of selling our house to buy a narrow boat to liveaboard. We have chosen a seventy foot boat to give us maximum living space as we do not intend to cruise the whole system. I just wondered if anyone could help with a few questions. 1 What sort of running costs would run a boat this size. It as a corner oil stove and a mikuni mx60 oil boiler for the central heating and hot water. I know about the licence, insurance etc. 2 What will I be able to run on the boat, which is fitted with a travelpower 3.5kva, 3 x 220a/h domestic batteries, victron inverter 12/1600/70 and are solar panels worth the money not fitted yet but something I would like to consider for the future. 3 How many running hours will the engine need between services. I,m sure I have loads of questions if anyone can help. Thanks
