  1. Now then... The alternator has been and serviced. The problem was identified as the regulator- all credit to Carr Electrical Services Ltd of Upper Trinity Street, Digbeth. OH walked there (30 minute walk from Cambrian Wharf) and all thanks to Chris for turning it around in the day! But thanks also to you readers for your help and suggestions. Happily heading on our way again tomorrow to Catherine de Barnes.
  2. Many thank Horace and all who responded. Had a busy day here today as we had visitors including our 3 year old grand daughter so didn't get much done, however we have found out that there is an auto electrician in Digbeth which OH will visit, after he has also double checked the sense wire that you mentioned. So grateful for all your input. And BTW, we have most supplies with us, including the kitchen sink... Just didn't have alternator!! Thank you all again. Happy days!
  3. Good morning Horace 42 and thanks for replying. The batteries are getting exceedingly hot and gassing. Had to top up batteries twice since coming up Wolverhampton 2 days ago. OH almost certain it's the regulator. Thank you for your help.
  4. Thank you... Hopefully someone may remember.. Off to bed now. Will check again on the morning.
  5. Hi folks.... Need a bit of advice from someone please. It appears that our alternator is on the blink. OH suspects it's the regulator - constantly charging at a solid 16 volts. It used to charge to a maximum of 14.3 volts. The question is.... Does anyone of an auto electrician that services/ reconditions alternators. At the moment we've just moored in central Birmingham and plan to be here a few days. We're unsure of the make of alternator as there's no external reference. However external documentation says 80 amp Prestolite. Oh can fit himself... Just need the part!!! Any suggestions gratefully received. May not be able to respond immediately to Any posts... But will check when we can Cheers Ps have visited Sherbourne wharfe who supplied a number for a guy in Dudley bit would prefer someone nearer if anyone knows of someone.

  7. Not sure if he owned the boat but last year Dave Spikey (Phoenix NIghts) passed us coming up to Hurleston junction.
  8. Hi there, I am not sure if this will help you but I believe there are moorings here at Barbridge marina (Wardle, near Nantwich). Barbridge Marina[/url. Hope the link works, if not Google if you google Midway boats, you should be able to see the info. Steve the owner is very helpful and the fees very reasonable. Hope you get sorted soon.
  9. Evening again all. Well what a nice helpful lot you are. Thanks to each and everyone of you for your advice. Regarding our location, we live in West Yorkshire and intend to moor somewhere within an hours drive or so from home. So anywhere really for mooring in the north of England (east or west)...for starters anyway. We have started compiling a list of marinas and mooring fees and intend to make enquiries....all we need now is the Once again...thank you kind people Ginger's girl...and Ginger!!
  10. Hi readers We are in a bit of a quandary. The OM and I have decided to bite the bullet and buy a narrowboat. That is when we find one to match our needs and falls into our price bracket. I thought that might be the easy part...looking for a boat...but it isn't. And another thing.... neither OM nor I seem to be clear about whether we find a mooring first or purchase a boat and then look for a mooring. I know that some brokerages / sellers offer moorings (good will gesture, or otherwise) until you find a mooring...but what happens if you buy a boat and don't have a mooring. Neither of us are retired so can't spend our days moving around till we find one. Any suggestions, gratefully received. Only helpful ones please...remember...we are new to buying a boat. Thank you.
  11. How glad I am that I have found this site. So much information and a good laugh too. Myself and hubby are taking our first narrow boat shortbreak holiday 1st April! – Hope we both don’t end up being the April Fool. We can’t wait. God help us if we love it, because already we seem to be spending every weekend looking around local marinas, walking along canal sides and looking at boats for sale – talking already about buying one for holidaying, if we like it. We shall be picking up at Ellesmere, and are hoping to get there and back (wherever there is!). Just taking it easy, taking in the sights of the canal side and being in the fresh air. Thanks all for your interesting advice. If we decide to go ahead and purchase a NB (we have 99% already convinced ourselves that we will do we will definitely need all the advice we can get and this place looks to be where we can ask, or look for it. Just wish we didn't work, so we could spend more time on the site! Ginger’s Girl

Myself and hubby are taking our first narrow boat shortbreak holiday 1st April! – Hope we both don’t end up being the April Fool. We can’t wait. We have done a bit of yacht sailing in the Ionian Seas, so have a bit of an idea, but still feel a bit nervous. The boat we have hired is about 14 foot longer than those we have sailed. God help us if we love it, because already we seem to be spending every weekend looking around local marinas, walking along canal sides and looking at boats for sale – talking already about buying one for holidaying, if we like it. We shall be picking up at Ellesmere, and are hoping to get there and back (wherever there is!)in one piece. Just taking it easy, taking in the sights of the canal side and being in the fresh air - plenty of chillaxing. Thanks all for your interesting advice, already written. Hope we manage OK! PS Thanks to NB Alnwick for welcoming me on board for the first time last week when I joined the site. Ginger’s Girl
