I am fairly tolerant and I understand that sometimes people need to run their engines after 8pm. The only time my tolerance was tested was on the K&A when the boat in front ran his engine for a third time after 8pm, around 10:45 actually when it was to enable them to watch TV. I was furious and marched up to their boat and banged on the roof. The engine went off immediately and a bloke came out and apologised. I was ready for a fight as I was so mad but was pleased it didn’t come to that. They moored near us in different places the next two nights but there was no repeat of the behaviour.

That was pretty much my reason for original question, but I think it is exceptional for me to find a reason, why I would need to run my engine after eight o clock, have never done it yet, it’s selfish behaviour in my opinion of those who do not plan ahead , or find more difficult options that might cost them money, easier to do what they think they need and possibly annoy other people.

Ad hominem attacks are quite unpleasant. Play the ball not the man, eh?

Is it not fair to question the intelligence of that of which is quoted, if it is a defence of their actions. ?

Yes, it is part of the licence agreement, but what do you think CaRT will do about it? With the exception of Road Traffic Offences, what action is taken against other social nuisances that move about?

So, what should we do when people are ruining our day, after a lovely cruise, we sit outside , glass of wine enjoying the view, and boat in front of you puts there engine on past the rule times. He may have excuses, beware, or not care.

Why would you expect boaters to be different to people in other walks of life?.  Like the people who jump the bus queue; park on yellow lines 'for a couple of minutes'; play music in the park or on the beach; block junctions in their cars.

Some people are just obnoxious. The last time I asked someone to stop running their engines, we had moored at Alrewas at 5:30 behind 2 boats with engines running. At 8:10 I asked them to stop and was told we can run them till 8:00 o clock. I then replied that was why I had waited till 10 past. They both switched off. Bang on 8:00 am the next morning they both started up again.

Well I think it’s part of the license agreement, so now I do not confront, unless I can’t stand it any longer, I report to canal and river trust, I did just that last night, snitch I know.

Yes I see them as guidelines, to be used with intelligent reasoning

Is it not fair to ask with which intelligence one is quoting ?

Yes I see them as guidelines, to be used with intelligent reasoning. It is interesting that those that see them as hard and fast rules will usually smugly proclaim to be using a boat in the only correct way with no energy high items.   Normally the times I cruise,  away from the umbilical cord of electricity, will be during trips taken whilst on holiday and so will not need to run the engine out of hours. This particular occasion it has been unavoidable due to a three week stoppage by CRT and I have needed to return to work, driving some distance and hence 10 hours away  The options are limited, on this occasion as I have explained it was impossible to forewarn the neighbour of the problem.

It isn't always about selfishness nor indeed anarchy!

Has your I Q been assessed?

And of course a bit of flexibility helps the world go round

I've done it once or twice, long days at work or needing a hot shower, I just check with the neighbours, explain the issue and I've never had a problem.

In a similar vein I've had the neighbours pop over and ask do I mind and it's fine

Have you thought about going into a marina, rather than put put people into a situation where it would be rude not to say yes. So you also feel that the rules are not the rules, they are flexible, if they don’t suit you.

  6. 11 minutes ago, Chagall said:

I had no other options, unless I was to avoid a soaked kitchen floor and ruined freezer goods, does that make me selfish for the two nights in 12 years of boating where it was needed to so transgress?   Do please explain the two options I might have chosen?

Well  there is always options, you took the easiest, which probably annoyed other people, did you have a nice day in work ,?

I certainly wouldn't complain to C&RT. As has already been said there may be a valid reason for running their engine but you won't know that unless you speak to them which you seem reluctant to do. In your shoes, it would depend how bad it was what I would do. For example if the fumes from their engine was entering my boat, I would certainly ask them if they could possibly switch off their engine. If however, it is just the noise, I would probably just put up with it as I would be moving off in the morning anyway.

    haggis

Yeah, because , one time it turned into a physical fight on a river, once was a crying girl, whom I never spoke to just videoed her boat, and next lots of abuse, I am a cc, so these events are rare, because I have stopped complaining. I have no problem contacting people nicely, but their reaction has put me off doing it again.hence my question. That’s all it is , a question, why are you so confrontational.

8 minutes ago, The Happy Nomad said:

No. I didnt when we had our boat. Im totally unclear as to why you would ask that.

Only by your defensiveness, I will try not to moor by you.

Just sometimes it is impossible to let those know about problems, I for instance over the last two days have needed to leave my boat alone in an unplanned area (CRT stoppages)  while I attended work, and would be out for over ten hours and not back till 7.45pm, I had tried to explain to those around me for the previous day and all were okay with me running for a half hour or so past 8pm, today those people had moved on and another boat taken up on the offside, I could not yell across the distance my intentions and explanations and so I had to hope for understanding.

It isn't always about selfish reasons.

Hmm , not too sure about that, rules are rules, unless they don’t fit your circumstances. So did you have other options? I can think of a couple.

  9. 4 minutes ago, The Happy Nomad said:

I actually didnt advise you to do anything. I suggested you have two options after you dismissed my earlier one by suggesting speaking to the offenders 'didnt end well'.

So your options are the same, you either put up with it or move if you think speaking to them will not end well.

The options I suggested are in fact what I would do. Of course if you feel its too dark/late to move safely then you are going to have to put up with it and move in the morning.

Do you run your engine outside the eight to eight rule, ?

  10. 2 minutes ago, The Happy Nomad said:

Then you have the following options

    1 Put up with it.

    2 Move.

Beyond that I cant think of another option.

At half past eight at night you advise me to move, or accept anti social rule breaking behaviour, wow , thanks for your input, but it doesn’t answer my question, I wasn’t asking for your advice, I was asking what you do, I have told you what I do.

Or you could use your phone, no problem with reception there. Why buy walkie talkie instead, but I think I know the reason why some people would.!

Make a template, from thin ply. Finding someone to weld a flue for me took a while. So long in fact, I had two made. Hope to get about five years out of each.

Cheers, but I don’t want todo it myself, I want to pay someone to do it for me.

  13. I went to bollington as earlier recommendation, as I was near, but although , I was disappointed, there was a boat who fix all cratch covers etc, so got a new window panel in Pram cover, a patch on  corner rip in cratch cover, a couple of other patches, and a fixing replacement fitted, so not all bad. If I can’t find anything before, I will try kings lock, unless any other possible mobile recommendations.

Bollington has changed hands in the last 5 years or so.

    If you can, go stainless.

Steel flue does not last well with these smokeless fuels somehow.

Sounds sensible, but will take best possible option at the time, it’s difficult to be in right place at right time, without having to wait around too long.

Try the guys at Bollington Wharf. They made me a new flue a couple of years ago. Did a great job

Tried, but they don’t do any services according to girl on phone today.

If it's a straight flue King's lock stock them. They do boast if they sell it they can fit it.....

Thanks, I have till it gets cold to sort it, but will ring them.

  16. Sitting in the well deck, when there is a storm, is great, rain battering down, wind bashing you about, thunderstorms, lightening, all can be enjoyed in peace from the bow, fantastic, to be in the weather, but shielded from it. There are lots of other practicable, afore mentioned, but without my cratch and cratch cover, I would sell the boat, and buy one that had one. In just normal rain, you would go inside, instead of enjoying the view.

  17. Hi does anyone have a recommendation regarding, someone to replace my Morso squirrel flu, it appears to be rusted out from where it attaches over the collar just above the stove. I would like it professionally refitted before October, am currently in Macclesfield about to cruise the caldron and four counties. Thanks.
