  1. Hi,

I am three yrs away from buying my own nb and plan to spend,6 mnths a yr on it have been on holidays for last three on them two or three times a yr from march to september so far, tried March this yr to try when weather wasnt great, for experience,my question is,as id like to experience hard bits, when i have support [no jokes] what do you reccomend to give me the experience I will ultimately need to travel all the system when i retire, and wont have the support of a boat yard etc, cant do the liverpool link till then but what else, what would gain me experience so will be more confident of going anywhere when not got back up, presume some rivers are an experience only done the ouse, any suggestions would be welcomed from those who have experience..i have three yrs to get it right, and am learning confidence is a good plus when experiencing things

    Cheers Tim

  2. Ha got it right first time, had headlamp turned upwards which wasnt a problem in Barton tunnel as you can see the end of tunnel but as Saltersford kinks badly half way through I couldnt see A thing when half way through for a minute...Doh

going through preston brook tunnel, it was chilly apparently , so Anne lit a fire in wood burner, anyone ever floated through a chimney

  3. Yeah, have been Chester a few times before and know its nice, but like all trips on a nb you have to make choices if your limited to time, do i make the travelling time on the boat shorter to give me more time to explore, and stop off at different places , or just stop anywhere nice, even in the middle of nowhere,to just be on the canal in the tranquility, weather makes a difference, sometimes for the best so your forced into a pub and g/f agrees with the choice , great,so basically best plan is not to plan but we have to have a basic idea and go round that ,but cant wait to get older[dont think i really mean that, just think since ive decided to do what i want, cant wait] and not have to work ever again....three years to go till i can join the club unless sods law takes effect. Thanks for the help before I ramble too much about....etc etc etc

  4. If you follow the instructions of NB Alton as above then no problem at all for what you want to do and the pace that you want. To stop at the Cheshire Cat will save you a considerable amount of time, and should be no rush at all. My wife and I, first time boaters managed this last June.

Yeah your right, had a look at pearsons and the cheshire cat is the best option to turn at,also the run into Chester after that doesnt look that too attractive, although would of liked to look at Chester from the canal, but can leave that for another longer trip,or when i get my own nb.Thanks for the advice.Tim

  5. You can always just see how it goes, as the Middlewich Branch can get very busy if the Weather is nice. If you need to make up time, stop at the top of the locks into Chester by the Old Trooper or Cheshire Cat Pubs ( if you want to go into town just walk in or get the bus from the park & ride). It really is a pleasant fairly gentle journey, without too many locks.

Cheers for that, but my point is Ican get there no prob, but coming back there will only be two of us one being female,so is it leaving too much to do for an easy cruise back or would i be rushing..

  6. Hi,

Would it be possible for a leisurely trip to get from Chester to Lymm in three and a half 6hr days with just two on board, I reckon i can doit from LYMM to chester first three and a half ,will be four of us and probably do at least 6 hours going there so wont be a problem, Ijust dont want to leave myself too much to do going back, as i like to try the different hostelries etcand dont want to feel rushed, i know technically it can be done according to canal plan, turning at cow lane,W. ld the considered opinion be that i will manage it easily.Any thoughts welcomed . Cheers Tim

  7. I think, sack the management,if it creates that much income, but the only way of making it profitable is to get people to work for free,is rediculous, get new management with new ideas...bring the canals forward not back, i find it unbelievably mismanaged, no common sense prevails..

  8. As I expected no easy answer to the dilemma,if I can afford the mooring will get the two, moor the wide beam down south and travel the north in the narrow and swap over if alls well, like the idea of one post, of selling and buying and selling and buying, but if want a good spec boat, might keep losing money that way, but an interesting idea, should have a boat swap club..

  9. im, three yrs away from retiring and buying a nb,just wondering if people have regretted buyng a narrow boat rather than a widebeam, i can see the obvious benefeits of both, all i can come up with at the moment is buy a nb initially for a couple of yrs then sell house and have widebeam as well, plan to spend as much time as possible on it cc,ing, want cake and eat it basically...

  10. Because of timings, I ended up mooring just in front of jesus lock, seemed to be last mooring left there so was probably lucky, and got a taxi to newmarket,30 quid.Got last winner at 7to2,but never paid for the day or taxi fare lol.Stayed overnight for two nights, great city. Not keen on the run from salters to great ouse turn ,bit bland , but overall a great trip apart from getting stuck on the grt ouse to earith and having to jump in and push it off against the strong wind, but all part of the fun of boating.ha..

  11. Having just come back from the nene, grt ouse and cam area, I found that when taking on water, that it was difficult to get the thing to unscrew again, when we filled at earith, someone had cut their hose and left the end still screwed on, but when I went to unscrew it , it came off very easily, but after I filled up, I then couldnt inscrew mine, and had to cut my hose, and then use the one that was left on earlier to renew mine. Exactly the same scenario happened at cambridge jesus lock, although , I was able to to get mine off again, and this time used the screw left there as it was a better silver screw and was able to use there jubillee clip.So I summise that after filling up the thing must swell for a bit afterwards, but then shrink to original size making it easier to then undo. Never noticed this anywhere before, cant be a case of doing up too tight as after a while it is then easy to unscrew. Just weird and an observation if anyone has the same problem..

  12. It's about 5 hours from Salter's Lode to March, and about 4 hours to Ely from Denver. Ely to Cam is 4 to 5 hours. Add in a couple of hours to transit SL to Denver, and you're looking at about 15 hours cruising. Those times are based on my boat which can cruise at 8 or 9 kph, any boat hired from Fox's would be able to do the same.

How that is spread out depends totally on the tides, so give Paul at SL a ring and find out when you'd be able to go through.

One vital thing you MUST check is the diary of events here- http://www.camconservators.co.uk/events_all.asp

Any rowing events will have a navigation closure whilst racing is in progress. You would be able to get through between divisions but could get held up for up to a couple of hours.

The sailing events don't have navigation restrictions.

In terms of guidebooks, Imray publish one for the Middle Level and another for the Ouze which includes the Cam. Both are interesting but not essential, you could try getting them from a library rather than buying them.

    Thats great thanks

  13. We did that in two days lazy cruising. Its about 20 miles from Ely to Denver. There were 6 boats all turned up at teatime one day and he came over and had a word with us to let us know what time he wanted us over at the lock pontoons to wait for the tide on the following day - think it was round about lunchtime (beg of August). He was very helpful. We were back at base early afternoon the morning before we were due back. If its any help we did March to Cambridge and back in 6 full days and we weren't exactly rushing. Oh and we used to Lockmaster map that was on the hire boat.

Thanks for that, want to go to Cambridge from march and back in a week, but one day will be spent at Newmarket, so just thinking about the logistics,if it takes six full days , i would only have five, so will have to rethink..

  14. Hi,

Whats the best guide book, up to date for around the river cam area, and anyone know how long it takes to get from ely to march in a n.b., want to go races on the thursday but have the hire boat back in march by the saturday ??

  15. Hi, planning on going Newmarket races in September, my question is, where would best/nearest place be to moor, to get there, suppose I could just get train from mooring in Cambridge, but I see there is a tributary going close to newmarket is that navigable. Any knowledgable ideas ? RACE/NB fans...Cheers.
