    Only because after Terry Darlington made it sound dangerous in his book (it wasn't), no-one would insure narrowboats crossing the Channel any more. We did take Snail out to sea in Europe a few times where she behaved very well, even in chop. Unlike Chris Coburn who has achieved all kinds of exploits in his very ordinary nb, we had ours especially made with a 15mm bottom plate, ballast cut to fit so they couldn't slide, 67hp engine, PRM260 gear box, large prop (22x22), double sized skin tanks, all portholes, trad stern, tender that was always available for use if needed, easy to tow along behind on the big European waterways. Snail easily makes 10 kts, (we tested this on the Gent-Terneuzen Canal,built in 1823 which is 200m wide and capable of accomodating ships up to 125,000 tons, with a draught of up to 12.5 m) not a lot of use now we've come back to the UK canals.     CRT's water management team reckon not until 2026 will the Cheshire Ring be doable by hire boats without any impact because of reservoir levels.

    Yes, our favourite country, cheap licence although it was increasing by the time we left and some great moorings in many of the cities and out in the countryside. The south was cheaper than the north. Just make sure your boat is less than 20m or it's a no no because of the Es-Trin rules which now rigourously apply to pleasure as well as commercial inland waterways boats. And yes, I know your boat is only 10m but this could be a useful bit of advice for others thinking about escaping from the UK.

Had this comment on FB: these occur after a lot of rain,the excess water dilutes the chlorine ( meant to kill them)In embryo form they pass through the 5 micron filtration capacity of our friends at the water board and grow in the pipes. If you have a Brita filter it will take them out,they might gum it up quicker, they are unpleasant but non toxic

    Some years ago I was a member of an amateur orchestra (The Slaithwaite Philharmonic) which promoted itself as The Symphony Orchestra of the Colne Valley.

    It was a registered charity, and as such standard tax paying members could covenant their subscriptions, making them worth 20% more.

    Could CRT do this with their licence fees?

    CRT is a charitable trust, not a charity. The difference is that it is run as a business but profits have to be ploughed back in to the trust's activities, rather than shareholders. I'm sure Allan can clarify further.

    @David Mack Sorry, I imagine thats out of date as I didn’t realise it was put out in 2016, maybe @wandering snail can update us all on current NABO thinking and their future plans for canal boaters.

    This took some finding from over 7 years ago. You obviously have an agenda with NABO and I would be very pleased to have your suggestions and ideas about how boaters can be supported with the challenges we all face in October 2023

    NABO are getting lots of new members. The council meeting today made some important decisions, join to find out and support.

    Been a few posts about the IWA involvement in this new campaign group, as they seam to be doing the Admin for it, then just seen this  on Twitter about the IWA’s £450K financial deficit in their accounts. Maybe not the best people to be doing the Admin/Finances??

    Please read my reply, THIS IS THE SURCHARGE AMOUNT ON TOP OF THE LICENCE FEE.

    It can't be the surcharge , because you can't apply a percentage increase to something that currently exists. It's a few per cent above inflation and is what we are expecting

    It's the ccer surcharge on top of the licence fee increase from April, yet to be announced, that will be increased above inflation.

    OK so some people using boats for pleasure and taking advantage of cc while living in houses may be priced out but that's life. 

     

    Nobody needs to be priced out of living on their boat if they have recourse to state funds. 

     

     

     

    I notice they use the term 'continuous cruiser licence', I wonder where they got that from??
