  1. Having asked for assistance in a specific location why is there the urge to suggest a solution 100 miles and 80 locks (7 days 6 hours cruising) from the requested location ?
  2. Surely, they have a home - they are just "of no fixed abode"? In law, no fixed abode or without fixed abode is not having a fixed geographical location as a residence, commonly referred to as no fixed address. This is applicable to several groups: 1) People who have a home, but which is not always in the same place: 2) Those whose occupation requires them to live permanently on boats, ships or movable oil platforms, or to travel constantly (as showmen, for example). Nomadic peoples (e.g. Indigenous Norwegian Travellers and Romanichal) and traveller groups (e.g. Irish Travellers, Scottish Gypsy and Traveller groups, New Age travellers, Norwegian and Swedish Travellers). 3) Individuals who adopt a mobile lifestyle, living in narrowboats, recreational vehicles or the like. An alternative could be Itinerant : (Merriam Webster Dictionary definition) itinerant adjective itin·er·ant ī-ˈti-nə-rənt : traveling from place to place, especially covering a circuit Is a slug just a snail without a home ?
  3. You may find it is too late to book for this year as good yards tend tp be booked up a year in advance. If you can get in, there is nowhere better than .................. Trevethick’s Boatyard Canal Wharf Gregory St Old Lenton, Nottingham NG7 2NP The family have been building and repairing boats on the Nottingham Canal since 1908 We had our bottom done there. You can stay on board and there is electric hook up, water and a toilet. It took 7 days to do it properly - in on a Friday as the previous one comes out.
  4. Not 'new information' but of interest ...................
  5. Move forward a couple of months and the ban on wood burning stoves (in new builds) is announced in Scotland: The Scottish National Party has been accused of launching an attack on rural Scotland following a ban on wood-burning stoves in new homes. Housebuilders cannot install "polluting heating systems, which include log burners, following the introduction of new regulations to tackle climate change. Alasdair MacMillan, who runs an Argyll-based architecture and planning company, described the changes as "seismic". Meanwhile Douglas Lumsden, an energy spokesman for the Scottish Tories, said: "It is vital that Scotland achieves net zero and cut emissions - but banning heating systems that people rely on is not the right way to go about it. "Many people living in rural, off-grid areas rely on wood-burning stoves to heat their houses, especially in emergencies. This ban would leave them without any way to heat their homes. "Yet again, the SNP-Green Government are showing their contempt for rural Scotland, ploughing ahead with rash ideas without considering the significant impact on individuals and their lives." The move, which came into force at the start of this month, has raised concerns among pensioners and remote Highland communities relying on off-grid forms of heating. The rest of the article : SNP quietly bans popular item in green crackdown with pensioners in firing line (msn.com) My Son (up in the highlands) actually burns peat, it seems every crofter has a 'right' to dig and burn peat) no doubt this will be banned in any new builds.
  6. Funny you should say that - this popped up on ny news this morning : Farmers are warning of food shortages as record rainfall threatens to bring the first season without a harvest on some farms since the end of the Second World War. Vast swathes of farmland are still under water following an unprecedented period of flooding, with 11 named storms since September and the wettest 18 months on record. The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board has predicted that wheat yields will be down 15 per cent, winter barley down 22 per cent and oilseed rape down 28 per cent – the biggest drop since the 1980s. Joe Stanley, an arable and livestock farmer at a research farm in Leicestershire, said he and his colleagues were facing the first year without a harvest since the land was first farmed after the war. “It’s no exaggeration to say a crisis is building,” said Rachel Hallos, the NFU vice president. “While farmers are bearing the brunt of it now, consumers may well see the effects through the year as produce simply doesn’t leave the farm gate.” She added that the situation was a “growing issue for UK food security”, and welcomed a new fund for farmers affected by flooding. Mr Stanley said farms were facing “an existential moment” because of the changing climate, which could put many out of business, reducing UK food security. “The problem that we’re facing is that weather is becoming so extreme that it is overwhelming our ability as farmers to continue to grow crops at all in some places,” he said. Farmers warn of first year without harvest since Second World War (msn.com)
  7. Actually meeting the requirements listed does not seem to be an actual requirement.
  8. The insurance generally says (something to the effect) "all requirements laid down by the navigation authority must be complied with" No navigation authority so no requirements on the lumpy stuff ! Edit to add : The 'small print' from Craft Insure. You agree that : The boat will be ashore or afloat on inland non-tidal waters and interconnecting tidal waterways of the UK, the Broads and the Thames not to seaward of the Thames Barrier. The boat will be used for private and pleasure purposes only. The boat is of fibre glass, aluminium or steel construction. The boat has a current Boat Safety Certificate (and/or a certificate of conformity from the manufacturer if the boat is less than 4 years old). The boat's overall length does not exceed 80ft. A Canal & River Trust or Environment Agency Licence, or the equivalent licence from the local Navigation Authority, will be maintained in force once the boat is in commission and afloat. If the boat is over 30 years old, you possess a full out of the water condition survey of the boat, carried out within the last 5 years by a qualified yacht surveyor, and all recommendations have been complied with (or a survey carried out within the past 7 years if the boat is already insured by you with Craftinsure) The boat is not more than 50 years old now. Neither I nor any co-owner have any convictions or pending convictions The boat has not been modified in a way that affects its' seaworthiness I have no health issues that affect my ability to operate the boat The boat is not a static houseboat
  9. I think he does - they will be away from the boat "working 12-13 hours per day" So I’m not thinking it will we are in a nice place just keep seeing posts on fb groups about stolen boats so my misses gets worried as we both work full time so we are away 12-13 hours a day.
  10. Sorta like A to B to A to B ............ (the waterpoint and back)
  11. From what he has previously said I doubt that they are working from/on the boat ................ So I’m not thinking it will we are in a nice place just keep seeing posts on fb groups about stolen boats so my misses gets worried as we both work full time so we are away 12-13 hours a day. Unless he has a home mooring, I'd suggest that in addition to power generation and water suppy his problem may be moving suficiently to retain his licence.
  12. In which case - yes - it has expired. C&RT are owners of the BSS scheme and there boat records are linked to the BSS system. Edit to add : My BSS was last done in April 2019 and the last two numbers ( /19) are the year it was done, so mine has also expired. (But I don't need to renew it now)
  13. There have been a number of posters, whose family member, have actually been affected by this. One of the criteria that the Councils use to determine if it is your main residence is .................. Address Usage: The address used for bills, doctor’s registration, car registration, etc., matters.
  14. I poorly presented what I wanted to say - I meant that, unlike having a boat in a residential berth, you CANNOT use the boat as your address, hence the option to use Boat mail, or a relatives address.
  15. If you are living in a Marina on a residential mooring you will have an address which you can use for all mail. If you are living in a Marina on a 'leisure' mooring (Non-Residential) you will not have an address which you can legally use. If you have no mooring and are CCing (Continuoulsy Cruising) you will not have an address which you can legally use. In the latter two situations you can sign up and use a company such as 'Boat Mail' to open your letters, scan them and email to you, or save them up for you to collect. Alternatively you can use a relatives address but if they are 'single' and receiving a council tax rebate for single person usage then you will affect their status and claim. 16. No, she was forced off the canals by C&RT (her side of the story) and ended up in a tranny van.
  17. If it all goes badly, maybe you could leave a note for your heirs to notify the forum, that it wasn't such a good idea after all.
  18. Deet is the stuff to have. In higher strengths (eg 50%) it does 'rot' manmade fabrics (as the army found) and plastics such as Glasses frames, so, be careful to put it on your skin rather than spill / spray it so it gets on clothing.
  19. We did the NC500 last Summer, it was awesome (a word I seldom use), we drove for 2-3 hours per day so we had plenty of relaxation / exploring time but it was not enough. Even parked next to one of the local Campervans :
  20. I think that just loosening / removing random pipe fittings, pulling wires off the stop button, shorting out the wires , is not only going to get you nowhere, you will make the situation worse and make fault finding very difficult. Maybe you should call in someone who knows what they are doing before you do something that causes a serious (expensive) problem. (it could already be too late for the injector block).
  21. I was always told / taught that you never remove (your) No2. 1,3,6,7,8,9, can be loosened and tightened when fuel starts to flow Loosen the brass nut on the outlet of the pump (No4) and pump it, if fuel comes out its working.
  22. It is exactly the same with both the BSS and Insurance. C&RT simply say that you must have valid Insurance / BSS for the full period of the licence. Basically you are signing to a commitment to renew the Mooring/BSS/Insurance when it becomes due.
