  1. SAVE ELVINGTON LOCK PLEASE SIGN OUR PETITION Elvington lock has been part of North Yorkshire’s waterways for hundreds of years – but now a historic lock’s days of letting boats pass through its gates could be numbered. The Environment Agency is considering whether to continue operating a facility allowing craft to travel along the River Derwent at Elvington, near York. History of the Lock The river Derwent was improved for navigation in the early 18th century and by 1723 a cut with a lock had been made at Elvington, bypassing a new weir across the river. A lock-keeper's house had been built by 1782 but the present house dates from the 19th century. In 1807 an Elvington trader regularly used the navigation and in the mid 19th century coal yards lay on the river bank near the bridge. The navigation ended c. 1900 and the Derwent was closed as a public waterway in 1932. The lock subsequently decayed, but it was restored for pleasure craft in 1972. About a mile upstream of the weir Sheffield corporation built a water intake and treatment plant, completed in 1965. (From: 'Elvington', A History of the County of York East Riding: Volume 3: Ouse and Derwent wapentake, and part of Harthill wapentake (1976), pp. 12-17. URL: Date accessed: 22 August 2014.) Have your say on our online petition http://www.petition.co.uk/save-elvington-lock. There is a meeting on October 14th 2014 to decide the fate of the lock. Please sign our petition to keep the lock open. Thankyou.

  3. Thanks for your replies. I feel much better informed now. Shame the environmental agency could not have kept us up to date instead of in the dark. Thankyou
  4. What is the Future of Elvington lock? In April 2014 the National River Basin management (NRBM) chained the lock gates at Elvington. There are 20 boats moored on the river Derwent at Elvington which meant that they were locked in. The boaters were given 2 days notice that the lock would be closed. A planning meeting was supposed to be held in June and September 2014 but this has not happened. The NRBM told the boaters that they would pay for a one way lift if anyone needed to move their boats. Two boats were sold in July 2014 and the NRBM paid for the lifts. I sold my boat in August 2014 and was told by the NRBM that they could not justify spending anymore money and that it was a health and safety hazard. The future of the lock is up for debate and I was told that another meeting has been planned for October 14th 2014. This meeting will decide if the lock is to be kept open. What impact will this have on the village and the environment?
  5. Hi Its 40ft x 6ft and it was a burnt out shell when I got it so don't know make and model but its always had an outboard. Fitted it out with oak so very heavy, I would say about 14T approx. Its all steel with wooden coach roof on cratch. Need to know what make of engine people recommend. I have been told Honda is best. Thanks for all replies
  6. Personal preference. Takes up less space. Have solar for all electrics, easier for maintenance. Plus the boat has been designed for it and I don't have a horse.
  7. Can anyone tell me what size outboard engine I will need for a 40ft narrowboat. I know I'll need an extra long shaft but not sure whether a 10hp, 15hp or 20hp is best. It will need to power the boat on the rivers. Thanks
  8. Thanks for all information. I am getting some oak cut to size from a reclamation yard near Howden called Old English Timbers. Much, much cheaper and glad that I'm recycling, cos most of what we've used on the boat is recycled stuff. It's a father & son business, so glad to be helping them out too. It'll be ready in the new year.
  9. Thankyou for all your info. Really do appreciate it.
  10. Hello I'm having a bit of a nightmare finding some decent wood to fit out the roof and sides of my boat. Went to Jewsons and was quoted 5,000 for oak.Bit too much! I want a wood with little or no knots in. Has anyone any suggestions of where I can find some? Need 9mm thick x 95mm wide and over 6ft lengths and tongue and grooved. Thanks
  11. Thanks. I'll check the dodgy policeman story out Thankyou. I've got the burnt out registration plate and it's the same number. How can I find out how old she is?
  12. Hi We are currently renovating a boat called 'Anne B'. We know she was burnt out either near or in Halifax and possibly belonged to a policeman. She is unusual because she has a square bow. Does anyone out there know anything else about her. How old etc. Thanks Trina
  13. Hi Once we,ve had the boat blasted, we obviously need to paint her. Would you recommend bitumen or coflex on the hull? Has anyone a good recommended paint which they have used either as a primer, undercoat or top coat. What is the best paint to use on freshly blasted steel? Cheers
  14. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO REPLIED. S OME REALLY USEFUL INFORMATION
  15. Hi, we are building a narrowboat and need to know which is the best insulation to use? Has anyone ever used spray foam insulation themselves and is it easy to do? and where do you buy the equipment and foam from? We live in York so would need somewhere close by if poss.
