  1. I have a friend who works for one of the Railway Preservation Societies, they swear by this gadget for stripping the paint off passenger coaches and get one side done in a day. Like everything it has limits. Big expanse of metal no problem, corners (eg side rails) and other roof items it will not get close enough. So the fiddly bits can take as long as the bigger bits. They are expensive to buy and the blades don't come cheap either. I have heard of £400.00 plus for purchase but not checked this. I haven't seen any hire shop offer such an item. This said, I am hoping to use one on my boat roof next spring. Oh and they are rather noisy when in use!. Puffer
  2. All very interesting. I have had a number of close encounters on sharp bends, but no "strikes". I try and adopt the policy that slow approach is best and when nearing the bend turn into it and increase speed, watching whether the front end reacts enough or not, adjusting the revs accordingly. A slow approach and then applying power gives a twisting rather than forward motion. If I encounter an oncoming boat, I apply enough astern to slow down, hopefully enabling me to see the reaction of the other boat. Failing this I stop and worry about the correction after. Seems to work quite well. I agree that the use of horns should be encouraged, even a novice boater would realise there is someone round the corner.
  3. I have mostly plastic, Hep2 piping on my boat, but it wasn't very tidily installed. It seems extremely difficult to get a really straight and tidy pipe run. I have used a lot of copper (both 15 & 22mm) over the years on various house jobs and feel that it looks an awful lot neater. I have also, where frost could be a problem, used plastic joints on copper pipe, although I have yet to put it to a real frost test to see if it will push the joints apart rather than splitting the copper. I have some re-pluming to do on the boat and will probably use copper except where it is out of sight. Sorry, not strictly "on subject" put linked - well thats my excuse!
  4. I acquiired a Dickinson Adriatic with my 70ft narrow boat when I bought it five years ago. It is interesting to read other postings as most experiences are similar to mine (see my posting before I found this item). I haven't been happy with it as it tends to run OK for a while and then soots up. I left it on overnight in December when I broke down on the way to Stourbridge for maintenance! When I returned to the boat the following morning there was considerable smoke coming from the chimney (despite leaving the air circulating fan on) and I later discovered that the combustion chamber and chimney had filled up with soot. So I was probably lucky I returned when I did. For safety mine is fitted with an over heat fusable link in the fuel line behind the cooker and there is another in the metering valve itself. I had considered taking it out, but have been reluctant to do so as the cost of replacing it could be high and the resale value low. However, it smoked again yesterday so I am seriously considering biting the bullet and replacing it. I have a rather mad idea of putting a second hand (very reasonable priced) Rayburn on board ( I already have one in my house). At least the lids on them cut down the heat output when not required which the Dickinson does not have. How to get one on board needs a lot of thought as they weigh about 6cwt (or310kg in micky mouse measurements).
  5. I bought my secondhand boat and it came with a Dikinson Adriatic Cooker, which also incoprates a heating coil for radiators and hot water. It has never worked properly despite talking to the supplier. The main difficulty seems to be (1) it doesn't burn consistently, being OK for a while and then soots up (2) I have tried to get the the water to circulate round the system, fitted a new pump and put in a bleed off at the highest point, but it remains stubbornly cold! Anyone know anything about these beasts or any tips to try? Sorry for the typo in the heading.java script:emoticon('',%20'smid_3')
