    Towing

Jeep Cherokees (-2001) are plated for 3.25tons and Grand Cherokees 3.5tons if you're looking for a cheap tow vehicle. That's with a braked trailer, of course.
  2. If you're buying new extinguishers, I'd recommend checking out water mist extinguishers. We use them at work, and I've done the training/demo with them several times. They are extremely effective and cause much less "collateral damage" than powder or traditional water extinguishers. You can even use them on chip pan type fires instead of a fire blanket. I have no links with the company, apart from being an impressed user! http://www.fireservice.co.uk/safety/water-mist-extinguishers Video: http://www.safelincs.co.uk/video_player.php?vid=49 edit: Duh - fixed video link
  3. Very good point! I'd imagine that even if you managed to fix the engine you'd run the risk of some rudder damage after that sort of slam and subsequent pressure.
  4. There's a biodiesel supplier on an A road local to me. It ran a Mk3 Golf perfectly happily despite the grim warnings I got from every mechanic I spoke to. The amount of tooth sucking and head shaking was impressive, but they all had a different reason why biodiesel would "kill the engine". Car has long been sold, we're now running on LPG
  5. Hello I'm on holiday in France at the moment and had a chance to take a look at this Berrichon barge being built in Vallon-en-Sully next to the Canal de Berry. I thought it might be interesting to some folks. I don't have any measurements, but from looking at it - and then cross checking with the lock sizes on this canal I reckon it's about 90ft by 9ft, but in metric. Here's a very poor photo of one of the information posters nearby, showing what they're aiming to reproduce. This must have been one seriously deep canal when it was in use! I'm told that the boat is being used as a training project for local craftsmen and has been partially built and rebuilt over the last three years or so. What will happen to it if it is ever completed is unclear!
  6. OOhh lucky people to see the Vulcan! It's the last year it'll be flying, apparently
  7. I love that pub, if I was on the boat now I'd be heading to Napton at full speed with two big ground anchors and a plausible credit card
  8. There no denying it makes LOTS of money. It just irritates me. Perhaps I should write Apple a good stiff letter
  9. Typical Apple. They take someone else's idea (Skype) and make their own version which only works on Apple products. Then before you know it you've got a million iSheep demanding that you use Facetime instead of Skype because they're too lazy to install Skype. Bah.
  10. Because boats are not appreciating assets, houses are. I don't think that the property market (especially in the SE) is sustainable, but I'm only one person.
  11. sorry, you just tripped my geekish pedant alarm. The key makes the connection "Private" which means your neighbour can't use it easily. It does not mean that your computer is any less likely to be compromised by malware, hackers or any other cyber threat on the internet.
  12. Interesting that his motivation was the refusal to abandon the values of the society that had put him there in the first place rather than escapism.
  13. "Contact Sport" should only be used by the person who has been hit in the vein of "Don't worry about it" or "Shit Happens" when there's no damage of note. To use it as an excuse for hitting someone else is irritating at best.
  14. Report the problems in writing as they happen, keep a copy Warn CART in writing that unless they fix the list of problems (Attached) of which they have been notified on the following dates (copies of correspondence attached) you will withhold a fair percentage of your mooring fees. That should do it. If not, withhold a reasonable proportion of your mooring fee and keep it in a separate account in case you need it. The only way to get a landlord moving is to withhold rent.
  15. Holy Carp, Batman! That does sound great, but not the sort of palaver you need when you just want to boil the kettle I salute you, and your (enormous) tin of Brasso

  17. Whatever it is, it's better than tobacco smoke, but for a really fantastic exhaust smell you can burn recycled "biodiesel". We used to run it in a diesel Golf and the exhaust smelt of chip fat. Lovely
  18. You get a trial for Spotiy mobile premium but when that expires you can only stream playlists, not songs - which was annoying enough to stop me using it.

  20. I think "Landowners" is an emotive term. I would imagine that most owners of large areas of land are rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect of the government coming to buy land for the HS2 route. "Landowners" employ Land Agents who specialise in maximising this sort of opportunity for their bosses. It's the people living in modest homes who have the most to lose. Their houses are less likely to be listed, more likely to be closer to the route and they probably don't have much say in the matter overall.

  22. Can you get flow gauges that would be accurate in this sort of range? It would save a lot of excel bashing!
  23. There's no way I'd voluntarily go into canal water, unless you count the weed hatch. Even then I wear gloves to help avoid cuts.
  24. Fake signs should be removed immediately, and you don't need to be CART to do it - you're just removing litter. I'd probably check with CART to make sure they _are_ fake first, just to be safe
