  1. Maybe true, but what happens when you let go as that dog is going to be very cross with you…….
  2. The point for your friend to consider is that house prices rise and a boat slowly rusts away losing value. So in 15 years time, the boat that was purchased with the sale of a house will have lost a lot of value, and selling it will not even raise enough for a small deposit on a house, let alone how to pay the mortgage. I wouldn’t sell the house.
  3. You don’t need to see a boat that has a claimed home mooring, just proof from the marina that a boat with the correct reg number is paying for a mooring. If a claimed home mooring doesn’t exist, then they will be charged the cc price. Much later CRT can worry about ghost moorings as that isn’t their first priority.
  4. My guess - a mooring not on CRT waters. So a mooring that doesn't contribute to CRT either directly or indirectly through their mooring fees.
  5. Or more likely 1 million people that each go 30 times per year.
  6. I am not aware of any BSS requirement that a stove with electronic ignition must have a working ignition unit - so long as this does not affect the flame failure shut off device.
  7. Bit more global warming and there will be.
  8. The bigger the tile the greater the stress when the tile expands. A small tile doesn’t have much ‘expansion’ growth at the edges, where as a big tile does so is more prone to coming loose.
  9. Agree about the dust trap - If you don’t use grout it won’t be long before you have a soot and general dust grout that needs cleaning out with a tiny brush. Just use high temp adhesive & grout onto a silicate board.
  10. So what is environmentally friendly about burning wood pellets? CO emissions - not good CO2 emissions- not good pm2.5 emissions- not good
  11. Nothing environmentally friendly about burning wood pellets. Read about Drax if you want to know where the pellets come from, not to mention the amount of NOx and particles they discharge up the flue into your neighbourhood. I burn coal, but I am fully aware that it’s dirty, but I don’t think much worse than pellets. Coal is better for boats.
  12. Easy - A normal fuse is slower than a fast fuse and quicker than a slow fuse.
  13. Because the antenna inside the box is to small to generate a signal strong enough for the tv, so it needs an amplifier. Problem in weaker signal areas is the amplifier will also amplify the noise which (depending on the tv tuner) may mask the signal, so though the tv may report a decent signal the quality may be too low to be usable.
  14. Very true, and 1&2 can easily be checked with a voltmeter connected at the inverter input connections.
  15. Certainly on later engines the filter housing has a large mushroom button on top which is a manual priming pump, presumably you don’t have one?
  16. But if the back-up pump is higher then when you look in the bilge if the level is ok for the first pump, the first pump is not faulty, but if the water level is too high and the second pump is doing the work the first pump is faulty. Just a quick look is all it takes.
  17. When towpaths become cycle paths pedestrians will be forced to occupy a narrow strip at the side which only the belligerent or reckless will leave.
  18. You won't correctly charge your batteries with a 'couple of decent solar panels' in winter. If you fail to charge your batteries correctly, they will not last long - maybe just a few weeks. Replacement is expensive. You are right that an inverter will drain your batteries. An inverter being an electronic device will use power to power itself which is between a few amp hours per day (if it has an effective sleep mode and isn't used much) to maybe 50 amp hours per day if 'on' all the time, has a large capability (a few kW) and by design is not very efficient. Most are somewhere in between. Generally the more efficient an inverter the more it costs. Of course any load on the inverter is not included in my figures above. So if you really don't have any 220v appliances and everything you use is ok on 12v, then you don't need an inverter. You need to be realistic in calculating your daily power consumption, and then work out how to recharge your batteries. Don't expect much more than 10% of your solar panels rated output during daylight hours on a cloudy winters day. Added - there are a number of posts about charging batteries and solar panels in winter, use the search function above if you want to know more.
  19. Worth mentioning that the weight on the aluminium neck collar is in lbs not kg.
  20. Unless you are an unbelievably low power user then i doubt you will be able to charge your batteries using only solar panels in winter. However if you are plugged into a shore line supply - so you can use your charger - then you will never have flat batteries. If you have nothing that uses 240v (apart from a charger on shore power) then you don't need an inverter as you have nothing to power. It would help if you made it clear if you will be mainly connected to shore power or mainly 'out and about', then you could be advised better.
  21. Because a tilted panel is more efficient so long as it is in the right direction
  22. You can join 2 to 5 wires in one connector.
  23. Or even worse the mains cable will be mistaken for 12v.
  24. Just a thought. You said “When the issue occurs it struggles to turn the shaft almost to the point of feeling like it's going to stall.” This implies that the engine, even with plenty of throttle, is unable to properly turn the gear box, which says to me a lot of friction inside the gear box. If all the engine power is being absorbed by the gear box I would have thought it would be extremely hot and probably very noisy. Is it?
  25. Not at all. My jeans have just come apart and that is exactly the repair needed to prevent accidental spills.
