  1. Not sure exactly what your after, As someone who likes the dark I’d say no exterior light is best 😃 especially when countrified. If it’s finding the boat on way back from pub then perhaps leave one interior light on, with my grumpy old man’s head on I’d say I hate too much illumination along the towpath and the twits with light sensors really do me nut, even those tree lights do my head in, something like the gentle warm light that a Davey lamp gives off could be quite pleasant though

  5. Worse still, it's an opinion which is not backed up by reliable facts or even conflicts with them. Again, no surprise... 😉

  6. I believe these opinions about direction of travel on restrictions were first aired on here to an unsympathetic audience about four and a half years ago, so if "H&S excesses" (if they exist) are getting worse since then (mid Feb 2021) then there must be some evidence to illustrate the trend. So where is it? Presumably this thread was a fishing expedition to find such evidence on the Scottish canals. The arrangements there don't seem to have changed for 15 years according to responses on this thread, so that won't do. Having established that, it seems the other poster's decision is to blunder forward with a repeat of the same assertion without evidence.

  11. As did I yesterday. If you do, don't bother walking down to The Blue Lias for a drink though, they retired and shut up shop on Sunday after 41 years. The pub co are advertising for a new tenant.

  13. I think that is a fact, if only on the basis that we will all die eventually, and be unable to blow our noses anywhere. Other than that it is an opinion.

  14. I had a leak on a 'flexible' exhaust that was a bellows pipe rather than the OP's braided hose. I effected a temporary repair using Gun Gum silencer paste, an opened up baked bean can and a couple of large jubilee clips. But it it was a bodged up short term repair (since replaced). The best thing for the OP to do is replace the whole hose, using a Midland Chandlers or similar new pipe as suggested above.

  16. It's what he always does. I don't think he knows the difference between facts and opinion. And why wasn't I surprised when he brought up his utterly pointless open train windows rant again. It's classic troll behaviour from him.

  19. The total storage allocation has been increased to 2GB per user just now - this is double the previous limit though we can increase this again if required. On a separate but related note; I'll revisit individual attachment limits once we transition to Invision v5 - anticipated within the next six months. The current version handles compression poorly, which can be problematic for users relying on mobile data in areas with limited signal strength.

  21. you will probably never get as good a chance to repaint under the engine so yes don't miss the chance. Blackrose will be along shortly, to tell you to use 2 pack epoxy.... (so more mission creep) and he'd probably be right.... draining and cleaning out the diesel tank might be opportune, but not sure the hassle of an inspection hatch is worthwhile. can't really understand the half height bulkhead thing (pic might help ?) but it could have been to keep the under engine bilge separate from the other bits (to limit oil contamination of bilge water). P.S - lovely engine porn with the pics of the new kubota earlier in the thread.

  22. Yes, which can include posting straight away afterwards and having them merge into one I believe ! Odd. One for Rich to look into perhaps. @rmo Maybe. The currenly limits for 'Member' and 'New members' is as follows: I have had a bit of look around the forum settings, checking the settings of some of the other user groups, and Alan isnt in any of them, and cannot see anything obvious. However I then looked at his attachment quota, and yes, you are at 99% with only 1024MB left! So that is the root of the issue, full marks to NB Saturn!

  23. As far as I know the cause has not been established, and if it has, someone is keeping very quiet about it. All we know is that the fire service issued a statement early on that "it was a lithium battery" with no mention of type. Those with knowledge suggest this may have been based on very poor knowledge and such experience as they have of other types. not LPF. Your last sentence is exactly why it is vital that a proper investigation is undertaken, and the results published, but I fear vested interests may make publication difficult.

  25. This happened on the Avon, last winter a widebeam cut the chains on damaged lock to use both gates, did even more damage including to the structure of the lock. Cost ANT a fortune to redo work that had only been done a few years before & should have lasted for decades and now they have stopped issuing licences to visiting widebeams.

  26. Not the best of places to try starting it. Maybe try putting the engine in a boat and connecting it to a diesel line !

  33. I don't know why people are particularly concerned about the height of a skin fitting above the water line. A skin fitting for a sink waste or bilge pump or shower sump pump could be just above water line and that would be fine if the waste hose inside the boat rises upwards inside the boat to a suitable height.

  35. We finished undecorating our boat after this year's challenge in Factory bottom lock for exactly that reason- nice and easy to get to both sides of it without having to faff around mooring up, and there was no-one else about. I made the mistake of going for a "comfort break" while my wife worked the paddles on our summer trip, the previous ones (all going up) the boat had sat nicely at the back of the lock and barely moved so I thought it would be fine, of course this time despite Laura taking extra care with the paddles it picked the boat up and threw it towards the top gate. I can only assume it was because we were by a pub and had an audience... I waited until it had (almost) made a level next time!

  36. No, it's not safe there. The Soar flood system is designed to protect Leicester, Loughborough and then Zouch/Kegworth. So everything is dumped from upstream quickly. As soon as Pillings Lock flood sluice gate is raised, the Kegworth Lock disappears underwater...I have seen it with only the metal handrails and paddle racks visible! I did have a picture, but Photobucket have stolen them.

  39. I'm a bit late to the thread, but in case anyone is still interested. As of 26 Sept, it is possible to bypass the Kegworth Flood Lock by going around the river loop. The only problem is that there's a large Willow branch across the river just as you approach the upstream fork that rejoins the main river, it requires a sharp turn to get around it. I got round in my 36 foot narrow boat and met a couple of river cruisers going the other way but without a bow saw or a chain saw, it would be a struggle with anything over 40 foot. Happy to be corrected, but I can see absolutely no purpose in that flood lock or the money being spent on renewing it as the river is connected on both sides of the lock.

  45. give someone a bit of credit for once, ffs, most of us will go aboard while the boat’s rising the last few inches and the water’s levelling out, why didn’t you understand that?

  46. I do most of my boating single handed on unmanned waterways. The good thing about locks is that the boat isn't going to go anywhere, so once it is full/empty but before moving on you can sort yourself out. If you're doing a flight then efficiency can be improved by only doing one extra job per lock. Adds a minute or two to your lock transit time but the boat is stopped anyway and it saves the time it would take to moor up then get going again.

  47. I thought you were a stickler for units 🙂 m = milli (one thousandth) M = Mega (million) b = bits (8 of these to the byte) B = Bytes It's all fun and games until (as a salesman at a company that I worked for found) you inadvertently use the wrong case in a contract and commit your firm as a supplier to provide much more bandwidth than you intended to a customer (as part of a wider deal for other services) for a bargain price. Oh how we laughed. I sometimes wonder what he's doing for a living now.
