All this pontificating over the purpose and detail of the law and its relation to the functioning of society in general has resulted from a poster explicitly saying that they don’t overstay. What is the motivation behind people’s posts for that to happen? No person ever needs to study or understand the specific law relating to anything at all in order to leave their home (or indeed take it with them) and function perfectly well in normal society. What is necessary is to understand your obligations in any agreements you have - formal or informal - and have a sense of what constitutes reasonable behaviour. In the case of boating it’s laid out when you purchase a licence, and for boaters without a home mooring it’s explicitly referenced to the law and explains what behaviour is required. Therefore I think it’s really poor behaviour for any person to suggest in public that a boater is not boating legally unless they can back it up with evidence of action contrary to CRT’s requirements. Even then I’d strongly suggest they leave it to CRT. As for my movements it doesn’t matter a jot whether I can’t move or choose not to move in the immediate days ahead (it is genuinely a bit of both). I will recommence my bona fide navigation of the waterways as I am required to do at a time of my choosing. That is entirely my business providing I remain in accordance with my licensing commitments. Interestingly though since I’m not a liveaboard my journey of one hour made specifically to ensure I kept to my side of the licence agreement presumably must have been “bona fide for navigation”? Yet if I were a liveaboard the same journey made for the same reasons wouldn’t have been? That isn’t logical and I don’t know the answer. I’m also pretty sure nobody here properly knows either. Nor do they need to. The fact of the matter is that if you keep moving without shuffling back and forth and cover a reasonable distance over the period of your licence it will be deemed “bona fide for navigation” by the only body whose opinion matters. As to whether the law or CRT’s application of it is fit for purpose is a different matter. That debate can - and should - be had in generic terms without reference to the actions of specific individual boaters.

Yeah, I read that, and my only problem with that particular judicial opinion is that it is total unenforceable bullshite. A massive weight of case law, not to mention the ECHR and other international law makes it unequivocally clear that you cannot commit a crime - nor yet a civil tort - on the inside of your own head. Also, that particular paragraph I found interesting because the judge also heavily implies that continuous cruising and living aboard are mutually exclusive. In the absence of sensible legal opinions or clarity from the CRT (and let me say I *perfectly well* understand why they don't want legal clarity) I am going to have to carry on with my self-imposed regime entitled "Don't be a dick". Don't attack the CRT on FB, don't whine about the license fee until and unless you are paying more to keep your boat on the canal than it costs to maintain your share of the canal usage, don't shout at hire boaters who cock up passing through a bridge, don't sneer at other boaters just because they own a tatty Springer, and above all, never *ever* **EVER** claim that your boat is more "authentic" than any other size and shape of boat unless it's 1923, you are unwashed and illiterate, and your boat is full of coal.

You have been told by several posters that their boats do this, and it is pretty normal, why do you need more? I suspect that you are allowing it to play on your mind, and your mind is amplifying your worry. I notice this is common when people hear/feel something they think is not correct, and then it seems to get worse. Think noises in/from cars and such like.

Most modern components are utter rubbish these days, especially automotive parts. I seem to recall that the panel was the best of a bad bunch. The whole cabinet was built from scratch, the photos show it being bench tested and programmed, which is why the display is showing nonsense. I still have the software somewhere for it, imaginatively entitled "Boatbox". 🙂 I have been involved in electronics and radio communication since I was pre-teen. It started when my father built me a tagboard with two flashing bulbs (a multivibrator) and when I broke it, refused to mend it. I ran the school radio club and then my first job was building car park barrier control systems. I got my amateur radio licence in 1980 and then started playing with and retailing computers as they became available. I now do all sorts of projects, my main focus is niche markets where I can design something that just doesn't exist. This isn't really an appropriate forum otherwise I could fill pages with my "stuff". However here are a couple of relevant photographs. The first is a RTTY (telex over radio) modem currently under development, colour 3D printed cabinet included. The other is part of my bench showing an older version of the same thing, a 7" version and the one in white hiding behind the lamp, a 1990 version I built which controlled a teleprinter. The blue box is a test rig I built which does lots of things, the main use being brute force control code finding for car radios. This is a commercial product I designed because there was nothing like it on the market. It controls an aftermarket radio in BMW motorcycles that use iBus (predecessor to CANBus). Cases designed and printed myself too.

Well, possibly. Although it is worth pointing out that that particular piece of legislation is based on UK law on the first place, so repealing it may well please the readership of the Daily Mail but it will have precious little effect on UK law. Of course, it will then be possible for the government of the time to introduce the concept of thought crime to the legal framework, but by that point I suggest that overstaying by a week or two will not be at the top of anybody's main anxieties....

In the 1930s when Jerry Cans were introduced they had a stated capacity of 20 litres It was invented by the 'Germans' (hence the name Jerry Can") and used by them in 1937 to stockpile fuel for the upcoming "international meeting 2nd round" the design was very quickly copied by the US and the UK which explains the weird capacity in everything except litres ie : 5.3 gallons (US) & 4.4 gallons (imperial)

But but but.... centimetres are a 'non-preferred' unit in SI. We are supposed to use either millimetres OR metres. And certainly not mix metres and millimetres together e.g. 1 metre and 730 millimetres. You are either 1,730mm tall or 1.73m. Neither seeming as intuitive and 'human' as saying 5 foot 8 inches tall.

That's just silly. Practically no-one in the UK knows their height in meters/cm. I'm sure I've heard Popeye use that word!

They obviously use the same AI bot as my local Housing Trust. After reporting pothole in one of their property access roads, I received a reply informing me it had been referred to the maintains survivor. In further discussions, the maintenance supervisor got quite stroppy when I kept referring to the maintains survivor.😁 The fault occurs because the individual who dictates to the bot does not bother to review their work, but I suppose if they did there would be no time saved over them doing their own work in the first place.
