  4. Sorry but that's nonsense. Eight days after asking a ridiculously worded question it was suggested it may have been spam rather than a genuine enquiry. Your outrage is misplaced I suggest. Rog

  7. Here we are again! A very short trip this time to take KELPIE down to Northwich for bottom blacking and a repaint. With a side trip to the Red lion, locks and water level permitting. A good drive down with some sun and showers. The cratch cover which we took home to clean and reproof is looking good. It is raining, of course , but the fire is lit. Good service as always from Halsall and we now have two full gas bottles, lots of coal and a full diesel tank. This will be a very short trip as we have to go home on Sunday

  11. Like I said, two wrongs don't make a right. The "arsey" responses that came back from the OP were no worse than some from the people who replied (who definitely poked the anthill first) -- in fact some of these (from one poster in particular) were more personal and nastier than anything the OP posted. And once that happens it's hardly fair to complain when somebody bites back, is it? I've said it before and I'll say it again -- some posters need to take a long hard look at how they react to newbies, especially the language used. As things stand, they're driving people away from CWDF. Now maybe that's what they want, so I'm just going to repost this, from the very first paragraph of the CWDF "Ethos" Rules and Guidelines: "To ensure we provide an enjoyable and safe platform for everyone, it is expected that members be respectful and civil in all communications on the site. CWDF provides an inclusive online waterways related environment suitable for all ages and the nature of the language and images used must reflect this."

  12. So please explain exactly how the tone of my first reply to you had a bad tone and why you did not acknowledge it or ask for clarification. I agree that my second post just might upset someone with an extremely thin skin, because I said that you do not seem to have grasped that to get a sensible answer we need a sensible question, and noting that you had not answered the few basic questions needed to be sure of an answer. However, if you want sensible help, you need to engage rather than sniping. You will also note that I told some of those getting a bit upset with you that you should be given time to respond. To be honest, I think that you owe me an apology, but I very much doubt that you see things that way. By the way, I have no idea what the professional labour rate is now, but it is unlikely to be less than £40 an hour and more if paid via a marina/boatyard. As many of those who respond are either working or retired professionals, that tells you how much their advice would cost you out in the market. On some specialist subjects, the labour rate could easily run into three figures.

  13. I never understood the point of a narrow beam Dutch style barge. A Ditch barge in reality. Too many compromises and the wheelhouse presents an interesting problem. I have been on one of these and felt it was entirely the wrong approach to solving the problem of the Boat needing to basically be 7ft wide. Far better solutions have been found. Weather protection by a wheelhouse is a red herring. It will be more agro than its worth.

  14. But within a very few posts I did give him a reply based on the scant info given to enable him to find out. I agree with your thoughts about is and said so a few posts later. However, I saw no negativity in the posts, only requests for more information. How are we ever going to give sensible replies if we are not allowed to ask for clarification? It is understandable that new posters may not know how to phrase a question or what info is needed, but there is no excuse for appearing to ignore requests for more info even if the answer is "sorry, don't know".

  15. If you review the thread you'll notice the serious, heavyweight chip-pissing was started by the OP. Prior to that, there was just a light sprinkling nagging for a response to questions arising.

  16. Nobody on here loses from entitled stupid arrogant people asking illiterate and incomprehensible questions jabbed into a phone without any thought for who they are talking to (and that it is a discussion forum, not a free professional advice service) and then sulking as soon as any clarification is requested. We are far better off without those sort of timewasters. Anyway, it is noted that you didn't try to help him with his question at all, you just told him to go elsewhere. Why didn't you try to help him with his question? It is always very easy to criticise from the sidelines.

  18. I have been critical about how the forum deals with new members in the past but this bloke just spat his dummy out because people were asking sensible questions to help answer the issue, there was no 'tone' in this case. I sometimes wonder if people are primed to expect abuse because I have often heard peeps in real life discussing the forum and often it is in terms of how argumentative and snarky the place is

  19. Slightly off topic but here's the other engine from that site now located in Norfolk and in steam at least once a month during the summer. If anyone is in the area, the Forncett Industrial Steam Museum is well worth a visit. https://www.forncettsteammuseum.co.uk/

  25. I suggest that one should compare the conduct of @Sneill in the Traditional Narrowboat topic and the OP's Both posted virtually impossible to answer question, both got a bit of joshing, but one got nasty and did not get a definitive answer, while the other remained polite, provided the information when he could and seems well on his way to getting his answer, and, more to the point we are still trying to help him.

  26. I agree, they got polite replies requesting more information in order to help them, and also to be cut some slack. Their response was not what it should have been. The questioner felt affronted by the tone of some of the replies, the latter ones had degenerated, and so the snowball started. As said, two wrongs don't make a right, and a slanging match is just unneeded, even if you feel it's deserved. If replies are rude, that reflects on the poster who made them, whoever they may be. Take canal time, just chill, let it go by, If someone is rude, don't engage, it is no reflection on you, just pick up from where you left off. They might even learn from you.

  29. Rather than looking to enthusiasts why don't you listen to an engineer who has measured it? 😀 1100 amp initial surge (could be more with Lithiums?) falling to a about 360amp mean with 400amp peaks when going over compression. Will be higher on a really cold winter morning. To be fair to you this was done on a bigger DI so a beta 43 could be a bit less. You need a high frequency Hall current probe and decent data acquisition system to do this measurement properly. With correct design your system can be made to work. I would go for an external BMS with a contactor rather than a FET based system, but most of all I would go for a nice big lead acid 😀 We've been up to the water tap this morning, reversed back to the winding hole, tricky in a deeper boat in shallow water, gone back to a rather nice mooring basin, turned again, and now deciding what boaty job to tackle today..

  30. Yes, The Jolly Tar, I couldn't remember the name. IIRC it closed much earlier than 2016, remained undeveloped for a few years and then was knocked down and the site redeveloped for housing. It was never a patch on The Barbridge though.

  31. Are you aware that typical starter motors present virtually a dead short to the battery when they are initially engaged, then the current drops as the moor seeds up. I am sure the BMS will react almost instantaneously. so whatever their kW rating, the stating surge current will be far higher. I also suspect the kW is based on hp, not electrical load, although the two will be closely related.

  32. How about you have a stab at answering the OP's question given you are so keen to defend it? Here's the question again which I can't understand. Maybe you can... "I am a bit worried my boat may not be earthed properly after someone saw my wiring. Is there a sure fire way to know I'm not positively earthed? Thanks"

  33. It went slightly snarky after 8 days with no response, now I understand no one is under any obligation to respond but 8 days after a post, particularly after they post about being worried about something. It's only human nature to wonder what is going on

  34. Proof of what exactly? Nobody knew the answer to his question because it was worded so poorly. If he posts same question on 12v group, nobody will understand his question either. You just reinforced his entitled behaviour and impeded him from getting his question answered. No doubt it made you feel better though.

  42. I have written to CRT about all this again, I spent a lot of time earlier in the year on the new booking arrangements for Limehouse and Brentford. IWA are aware. Part of the issue in October (see below) is that I think they have switched to winter operating hours from October 1st, while it should be from November 1st to Feb 28th. During the winter period, the intersection between operating hours (0800-1600 in winter) and tide times mean that Limehouse can only be used on about half the days, and even more restricted for transits between Limehouse and Brentford. Use it or lose it.

  43. Ignore or wasn’t around to check replies? Either give your knowledge willingly and expect nothing in return or don’t do it at all. Do you have to have a public round of applause every time you post? Confirms my many previous comments about why people post on here. It’s all about them, not about helping. Very weird.

  44. Bang on. I’ve lost count of how many newbies I’ve seen come and go in minutes in the year I’ve been on here. Everybody loses from that. If you can’t read the negative tone in those replies then you’re tone deaf to be honest. Perhaps you’ve read too much of it and think it’s normal. Forums are odd places. Most wouldn’t dream of taking to someone like that face to face but give them anonymity and a keyboard and they’re all big boys.

  49. Yeah, these were the potable ones Tony. When I get on my mates boat next I'll see if I can get more info on the accumulator and should be able to calculate the volume from the dims. Thanks for that G. My mate seems to have an issue with the duration of his pump overrun, possibly more about what he's used to rather than what's right or wrong but your setup sounds pretty sorted. Do we normally add the service valves to the accumulators or is it just another thing to go wrong?
    1 point
  50. Make sure they are for potable water, the cheapest ones usually are not. I don't think the size matters much. The larger the size the longer it will take for the pump to cut in when a tap is opened and the longer it will take to turn off when a tap is closed, also the longer the cycling period if the flow from the tap is less than pump output. I would probably go for q4 litres from the sizes you give, but would prefer something a bit smaller.
