  3. Stop posting miserable stuff and go boating 😀 The weather is lovely, the locks are working, there's loads of water, and the vegetation makes the bends reall;y exciting. Probably avoid the North Oxford as there are a fair few lunatic hire boaters out.

  5. I’m fairness Alan did actually post useful advice and photographs re the orientation of the impeller blades on the post in question which I’m sure would have helped the OP If the OP had followed Hiders advice I fear he would be looking for a replacement water pump now as he either wouldn’t haven been able to get the impeller off or replace it and would probably have wrecked it. Hider you do sometimes give good advice but I feel you need to tell people if you actually aren’t sure and not get cross when someone comes along with better/correct advice its not a competition surely the objective is to help the OP ? Think about how you would feel if you were looking for advice. A person that was trying to help or someone who actually could help

  6. As my help, advice and assistance is obviously not wanted or appreciated on this forum I am taking Time Out to do more important things and will maintain a watching brief. So I have come back from the hell of Eastern Europe to be treated as a pariah in my own country, its unacceptable.

  7. I didn't see anything wrong with this at all and actually think Alan was spot on. It's perfectly reasonable to think or say that over doesn't need to make an announcement about taking a break or leaving. To me it seemed like the original post was attention seeking. That's just my view. Other opinions are available and I don't think anyone should be called a troll or shut down simply for expressing theirs.

  10. and that very definitely includes me, I have learned lots from other forum members. I think one problem is that many people do not comprehend that there are some things they do not know and can be unwilling to accept it. When I post on something I am not sure of, but the underlying theory and science suggests that it probably correct, I always try to use forms of words that show I am unsure, rather than stating it as fact.

  11. I think the problem we have (or one of them!) is the rather acerbic, blunt, forthright and downright cutting posting style that most of us adopt. It really does take some getting used to and can be very intimidating and off-putting at first. I remember that feeling myself and it took me a couple of years before I dared to set up an account and even longer before I actually posted anything. After a while of visiting the forum you realise that these people that seem to delight in being horrid to each other at times are actually pretty damn decent and each would go out of their way to help another. Just look at how much LadyG has been on the receiving end of cutting comments over the years. She could get very upset but she takes it all in good humour and knows that deep down no unkindness is intended. It's a shame that you need to develop a bit of a thick skin to get the most out of this forum, but I still believe it represents a community of amazingly knowledgeable and decent boaters and it definitely enhanced my boating experience.

  12. At least there was some information content, unlike your content-free troll posts which are just intended to provoke people... 😞

  13. I agree with IanD. There's no need for this sort of thing, totally uncalled for. It just drags the tone of the forum down. Besides, I'm not sure I've ever been through an airport where I was required or expected to 'announce my departure'.

  15. Back on topic, sort of. We have had our own boat for thirteen years now. I know this is a modest time for many, but we did hire extensively before comissioning our own. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time on the water, but both we and the system are ageing. It has for us, got to the stage where other avenues appeal, beyond the waterways. We have really become uber familiar with the system. Whilst we have more recently become aware of infrastructure deterioration and more frequent stoppages, for us, the time to say farewell to boat ownership is more to do with other paths we wish to tread before inevitable age defeats us. The inland waterways remain beautiful. We will miss them, but from our perspective, the character has changed. For us, I think the peak has passed, but for others, setting out, whatever their intention, there remains an awful lot to enjoy on the inland waterways, particularly the people you meet.

  17. Spotted a programme on Talking Pictures TV: "Canal Capers" - "A charming short film featuring a picturesque journey on a barge down the Grand Union Canal." Recorded it, haven't had a chance to watch it through, but looks interesting. Available to stream here: https://www.tptvencore.co.uk/Video/Canal-Capers?id=3ce8bc83-365b-4e8b-bda4-5a29ec82bb3c

  18. Did he make clinking noises when he walked? Seriously though this should be funded by the company and/or their insurance and NOT a charity.

  20. As another poster has just put, the polluter must be made to pay, significantly, (that is what businesses have insurance for) I certainly wont be contributing anything to let someone responsible for something as dangerous as this off the handle. Bearing in mind this is the Walsall Canal so any boaters on here would have a good chance of spending time down the weed hatch, this polluting incident could very easily have killed someone. If I were on CRT I'd already be calculating just how much compensation the charity should be due (a helpful source of income it they can put it into £1 million + ) I'm not surprised that they've been able to reduce the exclusion zone down to a kilometre since, a bit like homeopathy the more diluted this poison gets the less harm it will cause, and I'm guessing that they now know what quantity has gone into the canal.

  24. But he does -- he's still interested in telling everyone how terrible the canals and CART are, how much worse it's going to get in future, and how clever he was to leave just in time to sit on his nice big catamaran and cruiser somewhere else, presumably playing with his anchor... 😉 Or failing that, copying and pasting large chunks of legal gobbledegook which may or may not be up-to-date or correct, but are trying to drown people in text to convince them that they're going to fall foul of the RCR or BSS or DES or DFS or MGM or some other TLA, and their boat is likely to be sunk/confiscated/fined/crushed as a result... 😞 If there was a gold medal for doom-mongering, he'd be one of the top candidates... 😉

  25. Alan hasn't got any real interest in the system or the forum any more and presumably the lumpy water forums don't want his attitude. I can't remember the last time he posted anything that wasn't either untrue, irrelevant or just nasty. Waste of space.

  27. No, but it is obvious that I know more about this pump than you do AND that I have not given incorrect advice. Days ago I told the OP at he could not extract the impeller in the way you described but you took no notice of what had been written. Then you come back with more advice that shows that you have no idea about this type of pump, so I explained why you are wrong. I very much doubt that your intention was to mislead the OP, but that is exactly what you did, I had thought that you were trying to be helpful, but now the reply above seems to imply that you were just trolling to try to get a reaction. Giving more bad advice having been shown that the first lot was bad rather shows a lack of understanding and care for the people you are trying to advise. If you want, I will call you a first class idiot, that seems correct in this case, but rude, hence the "now this" - to emphasize that in this case your advice is not worth the time it took you to write it, rather than just call you an idiot.

  33. Thanks @LadyG got hold of the Licence Support Officer for Llangollen he has been very helpful and has sorted it out. I'm not looking for a refund on my CCers. I just wanted to let CRT know that I'm now on a mooring. Seems I opened a can of worms 🐛 There is no CRT process to fit my situation & the phone-in centre were absolutely useless.

  40. Canada Goose was the Anderton company horse boat "Winifred" which was converted into the motor "Warsaw" in 1939 before heading to Wyvery Shipping after her carrying ended. She's very obviously a knobstick, with the very deep and angled top hull plank, running into the deck beam, barreled hull sides and the unique industrial looking T stud, sister boat to our "Norway" project. Kind regards Dan

  41. Cast off and go for summer holidays yes. Cast off as a liveaboard, no. A deeply unsuitable boat for living aboard being an outboard motor. Worse than the non-availability of fuel (petrol), is the non-availability of a decent way of charging the domestic batteries, which in turn rules out running a fridge. A fridge is essential in summer unless you like your Chardonnay warm and your butter runny and rancid.

  46. Here’s a barge we saw in January 24 heading upstream on the River Seine, Paris. There was much fresh, and little spare room either side of the 1607 built Pont Neuf span. Cant be much off the maximum beam of 12m? The Pont des Arts bridge is around 500 foot/ 150m to guess its length. Got to admire a skipper taking that size barge through the narrows round Notre Dame and Ile De la Cite with all the commercial and much tourist traffic around. Notre Dame/ spire scaffolding in the background
