  14. I told you - stop apologising! An unpaid volunteer (which may not have been you) missed a renewal - unless you are up at 00:05 every night (local time, which may not be UK) thinking "I wonder if it's still working", these things happen. And a DNS renewal also takes time to percolate through the system, that's how it works. Now, thanks for keeping the site up 99.98 percent of the time.

  15. I measured my roof when deciding on solar. I have a tim Tyler -1300mm inside the handrails is the measurement. I went for 860 X 700mm and laid them width ways from bimble solar. You can walk past but it makes you be careful.

  17. Is the pump on constantly? If so have you turned the speed pump up to max. Sounds like the water might be getting too hot in the boiler. Can you check the flow and return temp at the boiler when the noise starts.

  18. Ive found , in the past, its better to fit the pump close to the backboiler and control it by pipe stat fitted as close to the backboiler output pipe as possible and not at the usually easier and more convenient other end thats near the electrics. Assuming your calorifier is the other end of course. Reason for this was that although it was circulating well through the rads you could still get kettling in the back boiler if ran hard.

  21. Fuses are there to protect the cable and for no other reason unless of course they are built into a unit in which case they are there to protect the unit.

  24. A lot of narrowboaters simply don't like anything that is not a narrowboat. So not a continuous cruise if you are on a home mooring 5 or 6 months of the year. Seems like C&RT make it up as they go along.

  29. The boater didn't, the C&RT did. When I contacted the boater he was unaware that he had been reclassified as a CCer. The decision I believe was based on his sightings and lack of sightings at the boat club moorings. The C&RT did amend his record when I pointed out that he was on a long summer cruise. If C&RT repeat that it will cause a bit of upset. Now semi-retired we will be heading out in April and returning in October - could be interesting.

  31. Elections don't ask the public for opinion on fees that should be paid by minority groups. Is it not obvious the results will unfairly discriminate against minority groups ?

  33. Probably but the license checkers call at marinas and moorings each year atm. I get a list of boats that are supposed to have home moorings at the boat club. Each year there are some who simply don't. Then there are some who should be on the list but have been re-classed as 'continuous cruisers' because they've been out on long summer cruises. That could present a problem for some people.

  34. Your mooring, whether marina, online CRT or private, has to be authorised by CRT. You can't just declare an address and moor up. If it's outside your or a mate's house, you have to pay an EOG mooring fee, so there's no advantage in doing so.

  35. Some pictures of Diglis Basin in the 60's The tug is moored outside the building used by KKE Architects not in the arm where the pumped water from the water discharges the building used to house Danks boat builders now Grist Mill Boats Richard Fairhurst moors his boat in that location the dry dock is the open building and picture of dad sanding down Vesta taken from a BW film The picture of the bow of a boat is Severn trow Spry in front of Danks before being done up during the Diglis development to add a canopy The picture of Altair and other boat are the last pair delivering to the Worcester Porcelain, the building in the back ground is Albion Mill which is now lower due to a fire and has been developed into flat.

  36. The whole idea of the consultation is discriminatory as it inevitably samples a large majority population who own a narrowboat and have a home mooring. If a declaration of CC requires considerably greater license fee to be paid is it not likely that people will declare they have a home mooring?

  38. When we used to burn coal in our open fire in the 1950's, mum used to lay the fire the traditional way: newspaper first, wood on top of the paper, and coal on top of wood. It always smoked heavily until the coal was well alight. Following a hint in a book, when I used to burn coal in my own open fire, the coal went in first, and a wood fire of thinly-cut kindling was lit on top of the coal. Once the coal got hot enough to start releasing the gases that produced smoke in the traditional method, the smoke got ignited by the flames of the wood fire, and the coal got burnt from the top downwards.with minimal smoke production. I still use the same method with smokeless.

  46. I'm also in the 'parsimonious user' power category. Even in the depths of winter I've had enough for laptop, tablet, drone batteries, phone charging and lighting from dusk to midnight. My three 295W panels occupy the front half of the boat, longer dimension lengthways. This gives me two narrow corridors for walking along each side. And the back of the boat is totally free. As @Tony1 has said, today was the best day for solar so far this year. After cleaning snow off the panels at 7am, power streamed in reliably through to just before six pm. Batteries were charged by 11am, similar to the conditions in summer. But I do always select moorings away from any shading. Flat mounted panels, 885W series wired. I still have a Honda generator, but it's been very quiet for four months. Nice to have as backup, however.
