  2. What about the fish? No license, no index number tattooed on their scales, no checking. Some of them continuously cruise, but most of them are swimming up and down the same short stretch of canal, with no intention of making steady progression round the system. They'll make an excuse about "we've got fry in this area", or "we need to stay here to spawn", or "I've got an ecological niche here", but they are exploiting the lack of enforcement by CaRT. Don't get me started about ducks. Worse than cyclists. CaRT pay for duck lanes on the tow path, which they don't use. At least the cycle path upgrades are usually funded from external grants. Bunch of freeloaders, after your hard earned bread.

  13. Actually, we were targeted by spam attacks in recent weeks. I'm sure some of our mods & members can attest to this while for many, it would have gone unnoticed. - Fortunately it was dealt with promptly thanks to the members submitting post reports and for the great work by the Moderators who took swift action. That said, ideally we need to prevent spam attacks in the first place and as such measures have been (and continue to be) put in place. I'm pleased to report the recent spam attacks have since tapered off, but that's not to say they won't try again. What spammers often do is send PMs knowing it will send an email to the recipient in addition to the PM itself. However, in order to send a PM, users have to meet a minimum post count requirement. (this has been the case for some time) With this in mind, if we were to make it so consecutive posts could be submitted in a very short time-frame, it will be very easy for spammers to circumvent some of the anti-spam measures in place. Some years ago, a spammer managed to send out hundreds of emails via the PM system. As a result, our mail server got blacklisted meaning that legitimate members were unable to receive emails from us for a short period (days), which is a problem if they need to reset their password or contact us for any reason + They won't be notified about any new replies to their content and this too will likely result in reduction in forum activity! Appreciate 24 hours was too long and as mentioned, we dropped the consecutive post threshold down to 1 hour as a result of member feedback. When taking into account the above, I hope it can be seen as a reasonable compromise. This is of course not the only measure to prevent spam attacks. As a former forum admin yourself, you will know that spammers constantly advance their methods. - it's a constant battle for us to keep on top of it. I had a look at your post in question and with all due respect; I see no reason why using multi-quote in a single post would not suffice. I can only apologise if you see otherwise. That aside and contrary to your post; We're not doing this "just because we can". - We're doing this to help keep the forum running in a responsible manner while also ensuring it's a safe & secure environment for all.

  14. Dump through is where the lavatory acts as the vent for the tank so when you open the trap the waste goes in and displaces air. Then you close it. If you want to see the shit do what I do which is use the ashpan and a bent soup ladle to put it in the fire. This is the winter solution. Allows stool inspection which can be useful for health reasons. The ash pan in this case is an aluminum wok type cooking thing. it slots into the lavatory for convenience.

  15. Douvre brokers are a good place to start but be careful because there are a lot of barges over 20 m that do not have ES-Trin certificates and therefore cannot be moved by water until they comply. Usually there is a contract when buying whereby you pay a deposit and the boat is then surveyed at your expense but if it turns out to be not as described you can get your deposit back or the owner puts right the problems at his expense. Like old narrow boats old Dutch barges can be a money pit but on the other hand the Dutch generally look after them very well. Good luck.

  16. There were such complaints. Dredging of the affected section was carried out to provide a much greater cross section of the canal to enable fish and barges to co-exist. It was thought to be a winter problem as fish had migrated to the sheltered waters. The most recent barge movements have not apparently resulted in any fish mortality. The Trust's Regional Operations Manager is very supportive and has agreed with CBOA to a number of initiatives to enable much less restriction on operating hours. Amongst these, obviously, is recruiting and training more volunteer lock keepers., and also removing the unwritten restriction on self penning by barge crews. There has been no change to the lock cills. The shallowest will allow a vessel draft of 2.5 metres plus a small margin - that is the maximum permitted/legal draft on the waterways to Leeds and Rotherham. Dredging has been carried out at various points, including some more ploughing recently below Lemonroyd. Dredging of the Wakefield branch is taking place in readiness for the new traffic from Birkwood quarry. The maximum draft of MMS Off Roader up the Aire & Calder is the same as Farndale or any other vessel - 2.5 metres. I think that's a payload of about 550 tonnes. The load restriction up the SYN is because the last part of the route is along the first part of the unmodernised section of the waterway beyond the AMA (formerly BW) Depot. British waterways did try dredging but bit's solid, and explosives were ruled out (I believe). I was told the level can only be raised slightly when Exol Pride is due as it would otherwise cause flood damage. I also understand that Pride takes a payload which suits the customer.

  17. The £400 should have been paid to you by your electricity supplier in six chunks (of £66 or £67) between October 22 and March 23. I'm not sure but I think some suppliers credited customer electricity accounts but others paid to their bank accounts.

  28. Thanks for that suggestion David, and it’s on its way 👍 Like John I was in no way doubting Daves wisdom at all but wishing to learn more. I doubt that the book will impart anything like the wisdom and knowledge that Dave has and to me learning more of these historical greats and their subtle differences in techniques to spot would have been useful. There’s a thread here regarding historic archive loss from people with much knowledge or material no longer preserved . Perish the thought but it would be nice for Daves knowledge to be imparted to as wide an audience as possible before it ever is too late. (I appreciate he’s doing a good job that way) Sadly given the diminishing number of boats with a rose or castle let alone scumble anywhere near it I fear the audience is dwindling and any awareness of past skills needs cherishing and passing on where possible.

  31. Having been involved in canals and associated painting since I was a teen, I’ve acquired the ability to identify the work of some past painters and Frank Nurser is one of them. As soon as I picked up the stool it screamed Nurser to me, I’ve another example of his work here in similar vein. I too endorse Flowers Afloat for anyone interested in the subject. We painters all have characteristic ways of doing things, an unconscious signature to the work. I’ve met many customers subsequently who have told me ” I was in Coventry/ London/ Audlem/ anywhere….when another boater told them….Dave Moore did that for you” Occasionally, I’m asked to sign a bit of work. I always decline saying that the work itself is the signature The timber issue. Frank Nurser died in 1953, I think, so it’s likely that the stool dates from the 40s or so. I’m not sure when plywood became commonly used but I’ve seen little evidence of its use in historic craft with original structures. Others will have more precise knowledge. I don’t recall seeing a cabin stool from working days made from ply. I used to use it to make stools, but it was a pain to fill the endgrain voids, unless I used expensive birch ply. My last few have all been pine.

  34. Unfortunately they need to do that in order to get the continued funding (or more) from the government. In other words convince the government that their canals and rivers are for the benefit of the general public and not just a group of boaters. I'd rather that than see my licence increase 5 fold to make up the shortfall.

  39. Empty large fire extinguisher filled with water (the top unscrews) and pumped up with a bicycle pump (schrader valve in the neck) chuck it in the campfire or hang it in the sun then discharge via a shower head. Hozelock used to do a hanging basket pressurised watering thing which had a nice little shower head fitting. Plastic but it was quite a good device. I gave up washing some yars ago so no need for this sort of complication.

  40. Adopting the American approach to measuring distance in units of time, we could do the opposite and say a "long period" is perhaps twenty miles.

  43. This is not easy. If it is not the sellers though who else is likely to own it? Finance company? Unlikely unless it is only a few years old,. Maybe stolen? Stolen boats are usually found pretty quickly. Maybe the sellers partner still owns half of it? that is possible. Is it suspiciously cheap just to get a quick sale? Has the sellers got any photos of him /her and the boat going back a few years? Does the seller seem to know anything at all about boats, how much the licence is for the boat, which end is which and so on. In the end you do have to ask questions and keep your fingers crossed. As for surveys you do need to get a hull survey done. An old survey is not reliable, 25 years is getting on a bit and a lot can happen in a short time unknown to the seller.

  48. One day, all boats will have an electric shower, being the natural evolution of going gasless once the traction is done by battery electric. The "house" side will be but a small proportion of the total energy stored and consumed. Electric cooking will be the norm, electric shower surely will be a logical progression?
