  6. A bit of background here. Many years ago, when common sense was still a commodity, Phil, myself and others used a product called Keep’s Intenso for decorative work. It dried quickly, covered easily and contained a high quantity of lead. Wonderful stuff, if a little pungent. The colours were rich and vibrant, ideal for this sort of work. I used it for writing on glass, too. In those days, lots of coach painters used Masons enamels. I could ring the local depot and my order would be there next day by van. Phil used their paint too, but something changed along the line, the quality variable and stipulations for minimum orders crept in. Phil decided to produce his own brand of glosses, primers and undercoats as an alternative. He worked with paint chemists at HMG in Manchester to create the range. The market grew and is well respected by many these days. With the brand established, Phil decided to produce an alternative to the now unavailable Intenso. The Keeps factory in Kent had suffered a fire and they ran into difficulties when trying to restart elsewhere, the high lead content being a factor. Thus, Craftmaster Flat Colour was born. Generously, Phil gave me several tins to try out. I was a tad reluctant at first, still having stocks of Intenso, but one Sunday afternoon after a well wined dinner I went to the workshop and tried them out. Not quite Intenso but a very useable alternative which I’ve used for many years now. The work is best varnished when completed, not a problem for me as I generally apply decoration to undercoat on cans, stools etc, much as the old timers did. The exception is if I have to add decoration to a glossed cabin side, in that case I’ll use lettering enamels. If you’ve read this far...well done!!

  18. Yes - we've had the best of it, it peaked during the 90's but has gradually worsened over the last 20 years as there has been a gradual decline in 'good times' as the 'snowball gently rolling down the mountain' becomes an avalanche of cost increases and falling standards, closures and lack of water.

  19. Judging by Alan's quote from Nigel Moore above (and Nigel knew the law better than anyone else, I think, ever has), then there is no reason CRT can't bring in other licences. A standard licence for home moorers, and a CC licence for those without. As far as charging for moorings goes, they can do that, too, as we know. Long term and short term, as well as changing the legal mooring periods on a whim. Llangollen has been a success, and so few complained that it's set a precedent for all city and town moorings - there just has to be enough demand to cover the collection cost. I can indeed see some changes coming. Isn't half going to mess their plans up though if they run out of water every summer from now on. Been good though, hasn't it?! I stumbled onto all this boating lark purely by accident. Been thirty years of pure gold (with the odd hiccup, admittedly!).

  20. It took us two years of eBay, freecycle, car boots and antique fairs to get rid of our posessions, we also kept a store room for many years where we stored all the wrong stuff (we also sold a lot of the wrong things too). If at all possible keep the house and rent it out to keep a foot on the property ladder and have a rental income. Maybe sell the house and buy another that is more suitable to rent. Even if CRT do not make living on the canals impossible, one day you will be too old to live on the boat and have to move back to the land. I thought this would never happen to me but this last year I have realised that even I can not dodge the ageing process. The worse case scenario is having to move back to the land sooner than planned and having to spend many years in a house, so you need a reserve to afford one that you could live in, and after living on the water for a few years you might be more fussy about the type of house that you could live in.

  21. I would say 20" is big, for the majority of my professional chainsaw work my ground saws had 13" bars, I personally find the balance better, which makes it safer, plus the engine can drive the chain easier, so less likely to bog down. Chain oil use is generally oil tank to petrol tank when the pump is full chat, they are designed like this so you never run out of chain oil before you run out of fuel.

  26. It isn't illegal, from what I have gleaned by reading. I also take as much care with my protective equipment as I can, and take regular spells of looking around. Also choosing off-track places. Lots of DIY equipment is dangerous. You have to do your homework and not act recklessly.

  32. I'd suggest that the Government of 'any colour' will have enough to worry about without wasting taking time for legislation / funding for the canal network

  38. I guess one answer to this is to run with their assumptions and say "I don't have a home, only a boat. I'm technically homeless. Are homeless people allowed access to a GP? If yes, how does it work with no address?" And I guess you can turn it round too and ask "As I'm homeless, how would the home visit you are concerned about work for homeless patients?"

  39. I'm new to chainsaws, and was nervous, the first time using it. Now, I like using it and prepping the wood. Cutting the tree limbs into stove-size lengths is the first part. Those pieces are split into sections using a 1.5lb sharpened axe, hit with a lump hammer. I use the same axe to remove the bark - very satisfying. It provides entertainment for the passing walkers. Although, I heard one say - "oh, I couldn't live like that."

  40. Since when did GPs do home visits - these days it sounds like an excuse to me. My housebound neighbour and my SiL who is similar can't even get a Covid or flue jab at home. Just saying what I see and experience.

  41. While that was the intention ten years ago, now CRT have encouraged so many more non-boaters to make use of the canal environment, surely the tax payer must retain some contribution? Indeed perhaps pay a bit more? They pay for other public parks through Council Tax.

  43. Realistically it can be done when the river and canal flow under/over each other, or alongside each other. The cost of pumping further is huge, plus the cost of whatever you are pumping it through (giant pipes?) Plus buying the land or getting permission to build across under it etc. In reality I suspect any canals that could be supplied with water from rivers already are.
